Hey guys.
Adware HBHelper and Browser Hijacker Desktop keep reinstalling themselves. (5-6 times). I have used Malwarebytes, Avast, Super Antispyware and Spybot. I have used several restore points… which make the comp functional for a few hours. Then the virus messes up the exe function again.
The virus prevents me from opening setup.exe files. autorun on cd.s. Can't use the start-search function. I can open exe files in safe mode.
I keep getting the message:

[ Windows cannot acces the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions for this item.] Cannot access User Accounts and a few others in Control Panel. Otherwise the comp runs fine.

I have saved Erunt backup registry. used Defogger, used Sysrestore and saved the various requested logs.
I started on a Hijack this page and am not sure if you need the hjt log. I will forward it as well as the others you asked for: DDS, DDS Attach and Gmer log.

Also Spybot found Microsoft windows security center antivirus override and windows firewall override malware. I removed them but later read that they probably were false positives.
I await your instructions. Thank you so much for helping out.
Kind regards:
JPS

My name is SweetTech. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • Logs from malware removal programs (DDS is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you.
Reading too lightly will cause you to miss important steps, which could have destructive effects.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • These instructions have been specifically tailored to your computer and the issues you are experiencing with your computer. It's important to note that these instructions are not suitable for any other computer, even if the issues are fairly similar.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file (only exception is for OTS logs). Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
. I will post a reminder should you seem to fail to do this, however, if you fail to reply within two days then,
unless I have been notified of your absence in advance, the topic shall be closed!
  • Please do not PM me directly for help. If you have any questions, post them in this topic.
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Questions:

Did you set up a proxy in Internet Explorer?

uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = 70.176.5.205:80

NEXT:

[external image: Posted Image] One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan and password stealer.

This type of infection allows hackers to access and remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it contains any other sensitive information, then from a clean computer, change all passwords where applicable.
It would also be wise to contact those same financial institutions to appraise them of your situation.

I highly suggest you take a look at the two links provided below:
1. How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud, and CC Fraud?
2. When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

We note you are using one or more products from IOBit.
IOBit has been accused by Malwarebytes of illegally using their intellectual property without permission.
Please see this for additional information on these allegations: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=29681.
Additionally, both WOT and SiteAdvisor have flagged IOBit’s site.

A thread in the IOBit’s forum responded to the accusations from MalwareBytes.
It is noteworthy that several responses from users raising specific questions about IOBit’s response and finding it unsatisfactory were deleted and the thread was closed.
The bottom line from IOBit was:“No hard proof shows that IObit stole database of Malwarebytes.”

At least until the issues of possible database theft and spyware packaging is resolved, 247Fixes recommends against the use of IOBit products.

Running ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the ComboFix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

NEXT:

Please make sure you include the following items in your next post:

1. Any comments or questions you may have that you'd like for me to answer in my next post to you.
2. An answer to my question posed to you above under the question section.
3. The log that was produced after running ComboFix.
4. An update on how your computer is currently running.

It would be helpful if you could answer each question in the order asked, as well as numbering your answers.
Hi. Thanks for answering so fast. 1. No I did not set up a proxy server in Internet Explorer 2. I uninstalled all the iobit products. 3. I installed and ran combofix in safe mode. I could not install it in normal mode. It installed the MS console and scanned. It erased many files, rebooted the comp in normal mode. No hitch. Right as Windows was about to open at the end of rebooting, I got the message " File CF9214.cfxxe To open this file Window needs to know what tool etc." I thought it was the log - it was - and opened it in notepad. Windows then opened normally. The log is very garbled. I didn't know what else to open the file with, and windows would not open till I dealt with the file. Pasted later in post. Update on comp running: I now cannot open Safari browser. I am still getting: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." when trying to open setup.exe files and some programs. I can still do most things. 4. Question: Is it better if I stay off the internet? Stay off the computer? - I have a laptop as a backup. I do not have sensitive financial or personal info on this comp. I play games, watch movies, design websites, write emails. I found the original cfxxe file. I don't know how to open it to paste it for you.. Let me know what else you want me to do with it. I don't think I can send it as an attachment Here is the ComboFix Log: Ah. Th forum telles me the post is too long and to reduce it. I will send it as .txt attachment instead. oops it is 385K. Still too big. I tried to send it as rar file. could not. I will copy parts of it. tell me what else you want me to do. Hello,

Response to Safari issue
Please correct me if I'm wrong but before running ComboFix you were able to run Safari with no issues. Do you receive any error messages when trying to run Safari?

Response to "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file…. Error
What setup file is this for that you are trying to install?

Response to using computer question
For the time being I'd recommend doing the least amount of work on the infected computer until we get it cleaned up.

The log that you posted from ComboFix looks to be a little strange. Could you please try and see if you can locate the ComboFix log in your root drive (C:). You can find instructions below.

Locating ComboFix Log
  • Right click on START on the left end of your Windows toolbar (lower left corner of your screen)
  • Click on Explore
  • Click on Local Disk (C:) in the left-hand window pane
  • Look for ComboFix.txt in the right-hand window pane and right click on it
  • Put your cursor (arrow) on Open With
  • Move your cursor to the new menu that opens and click on Choose Program…
  • Click on Notepad

When file opens, Copy/Paste text here.
Hello SweetTech. 1. Yes. Safari worked before ComboFix. Error message is : Problem with shortcut The action is only valid for products that are currently installed 2. Set up exe files used? I just try any on my desktop to test: e.g. HJTinstall exe or sysrestore setup. (also user options in control panel). I then get error message and know the problem is still there. 3. the COmboFix log file I posted indeed came from C: drive. It is garbled there. After my comp rebooted at the end of the combofix fix, I was prompted to open that file with a tool and chose notepad. The garbled version is the result you saw. So there is other way to get log - short of rerunning combofix. The Original file seems to be heavily corrupted. The COmboFix process - in safe mode - seemed to run without a hitch: installing MS console, scanning, deleting and rebooting. Problem is log file. 4. I will only use comp when you need me too. (this is written on laptop.) Thank you once again SweetTech. Have a nice evening/morning. JPS
Hello Shenlord,

1. I'll come back to this issue regarding Safari later.

2. I'd like to come back to this issue as well.

3. That log that you posted looks really strange. I'm not exactly sure what happened to it, but if you don't mind, I'd like to have you upload it somewhere for me so that I can have access to it at a later time if need be.

Please open this link HERE in a new window.

In the box marked Link to topic where this file was requested: please paste in the following text
http://forums.whatthetech.com/Adware_HBHelper_Browser_Hijacker_Desktop_t111140.html&view=findpost&p=643174#entry643174

Hi Sweettech. Not sure if the server uploaded the unusual CF.txt file or not. It told me to try later after telling me upload was successful.?? File is only 345kb. Check and see but I think it went.. I separately sent the original. cfxxe version that is in the CF c: directory. [Your file was successfully submitted. Please let the user helping you know that you have submitted the file.Query failed : MySQL server has gone away .]
Hi
1. No questions
2. I submitted the odd log earlier.
3. OTL log below (run in safe mode)….. Extras in next post
4. No change in comp. Avast has disappeared…. gone…. pfft. I have realtime protection from Super Antispyware Pro. I could reinstall Avast if you think it is wise. Computer is off unless I'm doing my homework for you.

I received the two files that you have uploaded for me. Thank you. :)

I would also like to see a list of files quarantined by ComboFix, so please do this:
Click Start > Run then copy/paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

C:\Qoobox\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt

A text file should open. Post the contents of that file in your next reply.
Quote[Windows cannot find C:\Qoobox\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt . Make sure you typed … correctly. etc.] (I copy pasted it twice from your post in the run window). I'll try again.
