Hi,

Can some one please help; My partner has an old laptop that urgently needs some attention.

On boot up it is not too bad, although could be better, & on shutdown it struggles more. The windows start menu is zippy but opening any windows within the OS is VERY slow with windows that become transparent & cascade down when you click them to close. However, some files are quick to load (eg word & Excell files).

There are plenty of times when the app/ process is non responsive & Ms windows always asks if you want to send an error report to Ms. Also, right click is very slow. Is her laptop infected?

She is running Windows XP Home edition V. 5.1.2600 & IE8 (which is also very slow) on a dell laptop 1.4 ghz with only 256 mb of RAM but does not really need more.

Please see below for the DDS & Gmer report logs (I have not included the DDS Attach file).

Thanks, in advance,
Marm.

:welcome:

You have not complained about any rogue security programs popping up or any redirects but I am seeing bits and pieces of some malware present, one being a trojan downloader that can download other garbage to your computer while your online.

A word about memory, 256 is the very bare minimum that XP needs, it will run somewhat ok when the computer is new but as it gets older and you install more programs it requires more. The very minimum you should have is 512 and even more than that would be better. When where done cleaning your computer if you want to upgrade I can direct you to a site that can help you.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

Please download Malwarebytes from Here or Here

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Post the report please

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<info.txt (<
Hi,

Thank you for your responce!

Please see below for the requested logs.

(Also, yes I would be interested in a possible upgrade - although it really depends on how much money we will have to throw at this machine? Would you recommend another OS??)

Just for your info; I am more likely to be able to reply to this thred in the evenings between 9 - 12.

Marm.

Ps. It would seem that the files & driver for the Dell printer has disapeared? Also, application programs are not being saved in the program files folder - any reason for this (although it does feel like there is absolutely no order to this laptop)!?

Hello Marm,

Well , before you do any upgrading we need to clean the malware off this computer. You stated its an old laptop, if its a few years old it may not have the firing power to run Windows 7, but a memory upgrade will make a world of difference with your XP operating system, more on this later

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 2

[external image: Posted Image]

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Hi,

  • Please download OTM by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the [external image: Posted Image] icon on your desktop.
  • Paste the following code under the [external image: Posted Image] area.
Do not include the word "Code".

    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Services

    :Reg

    :Files
    c:\windows\system32\browserchoice.exe

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
  • Push the large [external image: Posted Image] button.
  • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Copy/Paste the contents under the [external image: Posted Image] line here in your next reply.
  • If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

How are things running now ?
Hi, IE seems much better although files, folders & menu's on the OS are not great. Why is it that when I navigate from folder to folder & back again all the items on the desktop disappear for a second & then come back? Is that because of memory? When I check the status on the c: drive properties folder it tells me that only 11.5 GB are in use & 59.8 GB are free. Can we steamline this computer in some way? Thank you for all your help so far!! Marm. Hello Marm,

What your experiencing sounds like not enough memory, 256 on a windows XP system is just not enough. If you doubled it to 512 you would see a big difference, double that and you will see a bigger difference…BUT…I know nothing about your system. Adding memory is not brain surgery, if you cant do it I am sure you can find a local teenager that knows about computers that can add it for you. If you have two memory slots and one is filed with 256 you would need to buy just one 256 module to bring it to 512, on the other hand if they installed one 128 in each slot to bring you to 256 than you would have to throw them both away and order two 256s. I work on computers in the field and when I come across one with only 256 it drives me nuts, takes forever to run a program or to check anything.

You can go to this site and download the Scanner Tool, it will scan your system and tell you what you have, the maximum you can have and the prices. I have been building systems for the last ten years or so and I would not buy memory from anywhere else. Very reliable company. I dont think one 256 would be more than $40, but prices do fluctuate.

As far as streamling your system, we just do malware removal on this forum but you can post in our windows forum for help with start up programs you may or maynot need and and also the programs themselves. But I do believe a memory upgrade will solve most of your problems.

Now to remove most of the tools that we have used in fixing your machine:
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Download OTC to your desktop and run it
  • A list of tool components used in the cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTC to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

  • How did I get infected in the first place ?
Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
  • Tutorial for System Restore <– Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 3 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
Ken
Hi Ken, I have checked out the crucial.com web site & really like the service they provide - very reasonable pricing - so thanks for the link, this laptop is in real need of some more memory. Many thanks again for all your help, Marm.
Your very welcome Marm, Been building computers for many years besides removing malware , set up an account at crucial and been buying from them for years. Sometimes you may see memory on sale at places like Costco, but don't do that, the memory has to be exactly the size and type for your system or you will have more problems , let Crucial be your guide and you wont go wrong. Been a pleasure helping you, take care. Ken :)
