A while back, I seem to remember MBAM finding some type of malware, which it removed. Since that time, I am having problems with zip files being locked by explorer.exe. This will happen when I attempt to copy or move them to another location. The copy/move process will hang and all attempts to delete the zip file will fail, with the error message that another process has the file locked. This happens only with zip files, and no other file types. I have tried several file unlocking utilities, but the best I can get is to have the zip files deleted upon reboot. I have manually stopped the explorer.exe process and restarted it, but the problem continues. I am suspicious that this problem began at or about the time of my last infection, though I honestly don't recall when that was, or what infection was removed. This may not be malware related, but I want to rule out an infection first before I do anything else. I have followed the steps in Getting Started: ATF Cleaner - Done System Restore - Done Erunt - Done Disable script blocking - Done Scanned with MBAM - Done, no infections found Gmer scan - Done DDS - Done Thanks in advance for your assistance. Adobe has been updated.

Uninstalls have been completed.

Kapersky scan is in progress. I will report back once it is done.

Thanks
I am having problems getting the Kapersky scan to complete. It gets to about 8% finished and I get that Windows error saying that ScanningProcess.exe had a problem and has to close, with the send an error report button. It appears to crash with a file called EXTEND.DAT, which I think might be an Outlook Express file, but I'm not sure. I will keep trying to see if I can get the scan to run to completion. Here is what it found prior to the crash. The stopped by user line is where it crashed: ——————————————————————————– KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7.0: scan report Tuesday, March 16, 2010 Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600) Kaspersky Online Scanner version: 7.0.26.13 Last database update: Tuesday, March 16, 2010 16:33:04 Records in database: 3814171 ——————————————————————————– Scan settings: scan using the following database: extended Scan archives: yes Scan e-mail databases: yes Scan area - My Computer: C:\ D:\ E:\ F:\ G:\ Scan statistics: Objects scanned: 14514 Threats found: 3 Infected objects found: 2 Suspicious objects found: 6 Scan duration: 02:35:14 File name / Threat / Threats count C:\Documents and Settings\Ignacio\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\33\21207de1-6d5b9e47 Infected: Trojan-Downloader.Java.Agent.ab 1 C:\Documents and Settings\Ignacio\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\41\b023ae9-6aee2b0d Infected: Exploit.OSX.Smid.b 1 C:\Documents and Settings\Ignacio\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{341C600D-092E-4913-AC5C-81E3BF53E1B2}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Deleted Items.bak Suspicious: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen 3 C:\Documents and Settings\Ignacio\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{341C600D-092E-4913-AC5C-81E3BF53E1B2}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Deleted Items.dbx Suspicious: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen 3 Scanning stopped by the user.
Hi,

Go into Outlook and delete all the "trash bins"

Delete all the emails you no longer want, plus any from anyone you don't know or any with attachments such as jokes or videos.

then run this tool, this will also delete your Java cache

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
It's normal after running TFC cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Then try the scan again:
I did as you requested but now the scan freezes when it reaches a file called C:\System Volume Information\tracking.log. I am unable to open that file or delete it, or do anything with it. If I recall, a backup program I used to use would stop when it reached this same file. It does not generate an error, it just freezes. The last scan has run 9 hours and is only 31% complete. The scan did find several infections, but I am unable to post the report since the freeze locked up the whole process, so I am unable to stop the scan or view the log.
Hi,

Lets remove all old restore points and create a new one.

Please do the following:

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points
We need to set a new system restore point:

Click Start > Run > copy and paste the following into the run box:

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next.
Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create,
when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Now remove all previous Restore Points:

Click Start > Run > copy and paste the following into the run box:

cleanmgr

At the top, click on More Options tab. Click the Clean up button in the System Restore box.
Click on the Yes button.
When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

see if that makes a difference to the scanner.
Hi,

I'm really not certain what could cause that issue.

Let's try this other scanner instead:

Go here to run an online scanner from ESET.

  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activeX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic and also let me know how things are now.
No joy. It attempts to download the definition database, and after a few seconds, it jumps to the final screen and says the scan was completed with no threats found. Should I give it a shot in safe mode?
Give it a try, make sure all your security programs are disabled and all other windows closed:

Try this other scanner as well:

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC Now button
  • A new window will open…click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Safe mode did not work. After I rebooted, I got the ESET to make it all the way to 99% but it would not finish and got hung up in the System Volume Information again.

I am trying Panda right now.
