Hi,

my computer is now infected with this and I'm not having a whole lot of luck trying to get rid of it. Actually, because of it, I haven't been able to do really anything.

I can't run MBAM, or Avast AV. I keep "end process"ing the av.exe command in the task manager, but it keeps popping back in when I try to run these programs!

I found a recent topic dealing with the same issue and was going to follow your instructions from there, but didn't get too far because I didn't want to run Combofix without having someone directing me to…and to look at any logs and stats.

:pullhair:

(Ironically, I was getting ready to help my friend post her infected computer on here, with the same virus, or something like it, and now I have it.)

*EDITED TO ADD*
I was finally able to start MBAM by changing mbam.exe to mbam.com (thanks to their website) and it surprisingly only found one thing. I removed it, but I'm still infected. I rebooted and ran another scan with AV.EXE still running and it found nothing. Here's the initial log where it found one thing:

Hi,

Unless I am reading it wrong or you posted it wrong AV.EXE is a rogue program.

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Next:

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system…click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save… button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.

To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_enable which will appear on your desktop.

Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.

Hi,

Unless I am reading it wrong or you posted it wrong AV.EXE is a rogue program.

Yes, I have an AV.EXE in my process list. I can end it but it will come back.

Just wanted to let you know that's exactly what I meant ;) …now I am off to do these next steps.
Hi Ken, I downloaded GMER but the Avast icon in my taskbar is gone! I can't open Avast through the regular channels, so how am I to disable it before proceeding?
Just go ahead and run GMER, if it gives you problems than run this one.

Please download RootRepeal from one of these locations and save it to your desktop
Here
Here
Here
  • Open [external image: Posted Image] on your desktop.
  • Click the [external image: Posted Image] tab.
  • Click the [external image: Posted Image] button.
  • Check just these boxes:
  • [external image: Posted Image]
  • Push Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:, and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, push the [external image: Posted Image] button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your post.
Okay. Defogger worked relatively well, although I never got a prompt to reboot. So I went ahead and did it anyway.

GMER. I ran it without disabling Avast, but it seemed to work fine. I tried to re-add the Avast icon back to the information bar but it wouldn't add.

Hi,

The purpose of running GMER was to check for a rootkit infection and I am not looking at one, don't forget to run Defogger and re enable your CD drivers

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Good morning :adios: I am ready to do the Combofix step, however, as mentioned before, my AV icon in the sys tray has gone missing. I tried restoring it through control panel, but something is blocking it from "showing", even when the settings say it should be in there. And of course, I have no access to the actual program because of AV.EXE popping up and blocking it. So, not sure if I should continue with the Combofix without having disabled AVAST…at this point, I wonder if AVAST is even functioning on my computer at all…probably not. Same thing goes for the firewall…I have no ability to get in and change the settings and turn it off, or on.
Computer is now running without any obvious symptoms of malware. My Avast icon is back in the system tray

Here is both my combofix and hjt log:

Looking good

Lets check for left overs

Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic
Hi Ken, It found this and I could only find this one-line log. Should there be more info? C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\Documents and Settings\Kimber Brown\Local Settings\Application Data\av.exe.vir a variant of Win32/Kryptik.CWY trojan cleaned by deleting - quarantined
The files in Qoobox are just backups of what Combofix removed, not to worry, we will get rid of that in a bit. Are you happy the way things are running now ?
