I think I got blown off before this got posted.
I have a problem that seems to be called "XP Guardian"
It gives me various alerts (System hijack!, Security Breech! ) and various Popups.
It also seems to be interfering with programs such as IE. I'm using firefox at the moment.
Have you heard of this particular piece of $@*#^! ?
Any help would be appreciated,
Fred

OK, I'm in the process of trying to run the preliminary items. Ran ATF Ran System restore point.exe. Got an error message that I need to install some.NET framework… Can't do that as I am limited to firefox at the moment… Ran ERUNT Ran mbam will attach report Ran gmer, it locked up at c:\windows\system32\drivers\scsiport.sys rebooted ran defogger, ran gmer, locked up at c:\windows\system32\drivers\fasttx2k.sys Should I go back to defogger and re-enable the drivers? Right now I'm not getting the popups. Should I try IE to see if I can install the .NET framework? Thanks for the explanation.

No need to install the .Net frameworks yet and don't re-enable your emulators software drivers yet. Try GMER once more, but this time, uncheck the Files tab.

Then, also post the DDS logs (Both DDS.txt and Attach.txt).
Good morning I ran Gmer with the FILES unchecked. it went to the same point. This time I let it sit all night , in case it was doing something but no such luck. Here's the DDS.txt And I think I uploaded the Attach.txt as a ZIP Thanks, Fred DDS (Ver_09-06-26.01) - NTFSx86 Run by [removed] at 20:23:55.59 on Wed 02/24/2010 Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18702 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_17 Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.1015.565 [GMT -6:00] AV: Norton Internet Security *On-access scanning enabled* (Outdated) {E10A9785-9598-4754-B552-92431C1C35F8} FW: Norton Internet Security *enabled* {7C21A4C9-F61F-4AC4-B722-A6E19C16F220} ============== Running Processes =============== C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunch svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs svchost.exe svchost.exe c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccProxy.exe c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe c:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\ISSVC.exe c:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exe c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehRecvr.exe C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehSched.exe C:\Program Files\Canon\IJPLM\IJPLMSVC.EXE C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exe c:\Program Files\Common Files\LightScribe\LSSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k imgsvc c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\ehome\ehtray.exe C:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe C:\WINDOWS\AGRSMMSG.exe C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehmsas.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\hphmon06.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXE C:\WINDOWS\ALCWZRD.EXE C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Distillr\Acrotray.exe C:\Program Files\Motive\AsstCommon\motmon.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\Canon\MyPrinter\BJMyPrt.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k HTTPFilter C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe C:\Program Files\palmOne\HOTSYNC.EXE C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Desktop\dds.scr ============== Pseudo HJT Report =============== uStart Page = hxxp://www.google.com/ uDefault_Search_URL = hxxp://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&tp=iesearch&locale=EN_US&c=Q105&bd=pavilion&pf=desktop mSearch Bar = hxxp://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&tp=iesearch&locale=EN_US&c=Q105&bd=pavilion&pf=desktop BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper: {06849e9f-c8d7-4d59-b87d-784b7d6be0b3} - Can you run RootRepeal for me then, followed by Malwarebytes. Thanks.

Update and Scan with MalwareBytes Anti-Malware

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Go to the Update tab
  • Select Check for Update and let MBAM download and install any available updates.
  • After the update is complete go to the Scanner tab.
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Let's get an online scan done now. How's your computer behaving?

Run ESET Online Scan

  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the [external image: Posted Image] button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the [external image: Posted Image] icon on your desktop.
  • Check [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click the [external image: Posted Image] button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check [external image: Posted Image]
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push [external image: Posted Image]
  • Push [external image: Posted Image], and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the [external image: Posted Image] button.
  • Push [external image: Posted Image]
You can refer to this animation by neomage if needed.

Take a new DDS run afterward and post back with both the DDS and Attach logs in your next reply. Also, let me know how your computer is running and if you have any more problems, issues or symptoms left.

Thanks.

With Regards,
Extremeboy
I think I did it right and the results are included and attached. As far as behavior is concerned, no major problems but there were a couple of "unable to run…?" messages that my wife saw and closed but couldn't remember exactly. If they show up again I'll copy them and get the info to you. Other than that, how's your compute running? Any problems left? The logs are looking good and ESET deleted the ones it detected as malicious.
Seems to be going OK Came home to find error alerts. Microsoft Visual C++ runtime library runtime error c\Windows\system32\svhost.exe. svchost.exe application error the instruction "0x3d7c1079" referenced memory at "0x0000001c" the memory could not be "read" Click on OK to terminate the program Click on CANCEL to debug the program svchost.exe application error the exception unknown software exception (0x40000015) occurred in the application at the location 0x0574f589. Click on OK to terminate the program Click on CANCEL to debug the program I clicked OK on each. g'night Fred
OK, I lied. After getting rid of those alerts I turned off firefox. It wouldn't restart. The START Shut Down command wouldn't work either. I did a Control-ALt-Delete and SHUT DOWN , I had to leave before I could tell if that worked. I will report when I get home. Fred
Now I've got something called Topinambur.exe trying to access the internet. File is in c:\windows\temp. I haven't touched it . Won't until you tell me to. Also I'm still using Firefox. Should I try IE? Fred
Just sitting around so I ran MBAM quick scan. Haven't hit the Remove selected button yet but there's a load of new junk.. Hello.

Hmmm.. Where did those get back from.

Re-run scan with MalwareBytes Anti-Malware

Your MBAM log shows "No action taken". This usually occurs if you forget to click "Remove Selected" and instead only clicked "Save Logfile. Please read this thread and rescan again only using the (Quick Scan) in normal mode and check all items found for removal. Don't forgot to reboot afterwards. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. After performing the new scan, click the Logs tab and copy/paste the contents of the new report in your next reply.

Download and run DDS

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results soon.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results and then click Ok.
  • The black and message box window shall then disappear.
  • Please save both log files on your desktop and post the DDS.txt and zip up and attach Attach.txt as instructed.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE

Download and Run GMER

We will use GMER to scan for rootkits. This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop. Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.

  • Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Double click [external image: Posted Image] or [external image: Posted Image] on your desktop.
  • When you have done this, close all running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
  • Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program. Right-click and select Run As Administrator… if you are using Vista
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.

If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system… Click NO.

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Please UNCHECK the following:
    • Sections
    • Registry
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show all (Don't miss this one!)
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push [external image: Posted Image] and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

If GMER doesn't work in Normal Mode try running it in Safe Mode

Note: Do Not run any program while GMER is running
*Note*: Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any actions on "<— ROOKIT" entries
