A few days ago, I had some sort of weird virus. Initially, I'd get this thing that would pop up that said something like "Windows Vista 2010 Antivirus." But I couldn't get rid of it, so I turned off the computer. The next day, I turned on the computer. The computer wouldn't let me open any programs. I'd get Windows Internet Explorer windows popping up any time I ran a program, and those windows would pop up exponentially. All of my icons turned into mini-Internet Explorer icons. The only thing I could run was my antivirus program, which detected nothing. Before the problem got too bad, I created another user. From there, I did a System Restore. That problem was gone.

But now my computer won't do anything except in Safe Mode. It goes really slowly, and after a few minutes I actually can't do anything, though the computer doesn't freeze. I ran my antivirus program, Spybot, and Malaware. Nothing detected–at least, nothing that fixed the problem. I tried to do another System Restore, but that didn't help, either. Oh, I also ran CCleaner. Nothing doing. And my computer won't let me run Adaware.

So, I ran HijackThis and the log is above. I pretty much don't know what to do now. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the feedback!

Edit: I just wanted to add that I've deleted the torrents stuff . . . so, even though it's in the log, it's not on my computer. Still, hasn't changed how my computer works. Should I generate a new log? Or is this one fine?
Hello and welcome to the forums!

I'm SweetTech, pleased to meet you. I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.
If you have already received help elsewhere please inform me so that this topic can be closed. If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:
  • Logs from malware removal programs (DDS is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you.
Reading too lightly will cause you to miss important steps, which could have destructive effects.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • These instructions have been specifically tailored to your computer and the issues you are experiencing with your computer. It's important to note that these instructions are not suitable for any other computer, even if the issues are fairly similar.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within five days
. I will post a reminder should you seem to fail to do this, however, if you fail to reply within three days then,
unless I have been notified of your absence in advance, the topic shall be closed!
  • Please do not PM me directly for help. If you have any questions, post them in this topic.
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.
Please be advised, as I am still in training, all my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advise.
This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

I am checking over your log, I will post back shortly with instructions.
Thanks, SweetTech! I haven't gotten help from anywhere else yet, as I was waiting for the response here and other forums had warnings not to ask for help there if you had asked elsewhere. So, I decided to stick to being conservative. I think I've backed up most of my files, but I shall go look now to make sure I'm correct and back up anything that I may've missed.
Hello Angel2121,

HijackThis is rather outdated, and doesn't provide us with the necessary information to get a diagnosis properly. I'm going to ask that you run a few different scans below.

However, before we get started, I'd like to get some clarification from you first. Something that I was able to gather from your HijackThis log was that you have quite a few security programs on your computer.

You have: Spybot S&D, AVG 9, Norton Internet Security, Windows Defender, Ad-Aware, and a-squared Free 4.5.

Is your subscription to Norton Internet Security up-to-date? Do you use all of the above programs regularly on your computer?

Scanning with GMER

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

[external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

Please make sure you include the following items in your next post:

1. An answer to the questions I posed to you above.
2. The logs that were produced after running OTL. (OTL.txt & Extras.txt)
3. The log that was produced after running GMER.
4. An update on how your computer is currently running.

It would be helpful if you could answer each question in the order asked, as well as numbering your answers.
Hi,

1. My subscription to Norton is not up to date. I've tried uninstalling it, but my computer won't let me. My Adaware is also out of date. I've tried to uninstall this Adaware and install the newer version, but again my computer won't let me do any of those things. I only recently downloaded A-squared based on an acquaintance's suggestion. But when I try to scan my computer with A-squared, my computer freezes a little and the scan doesn't go past a certain point. I can't remember what that point is, but it's always the same.

Is this right? It looks a little short to me, but it's what was generated after the scan was done and I clicked the save button.

4. I tried to use my system under the last good configuration generated. It took a while for my computer to fully boot up. It worked for a few minutes, but then I suddenly couldn't do anything anymore. The computer wasn't frozen, but after waiting a very long time the programs still said "Not running." Oh, and during the whole time my computer was making a loud loading type of noise. I can only use my computer in Safe Mode right now. It's started to become slower in Safe Mode than it was a few days ago. It takes a bit of time for a website page to load, even if I'm using no other program.

Thanks again!
Hello Angel2121,

You said that when ever you attempt to remove Norton your computer doesn't allow you to do so. Do you receive an error message when attempting to remove it?

Note: You will need to right click either Internet Explorer or Firefox and choose Run as Administrator.

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky Online Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan. Click HERE to see how to disable the most common antivirus programs.
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.

The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take quite a long time to download.
  • Once the update is complete, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, adware, dialers, and other riskware
    • Archives
    • E-mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View report… at the bottom.

Re-Running OTL
  • Please double click on the OTL icon which should be located on your desktop. This will run OTL. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open up a notepad window called OTL.Txt.
Note:These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.

NEXT:

Please make sure you include the following items in your next post:

1. The log that was produced after running the OTL fix.
2. The log that was produced after running MBAM.
3. The log that was produced after running the Kaspersky Online Scanner.
4. A new OTL log.
5. An update on how your computer is currently running.

It would be helpful if you could answer each question in the order asked, as well as numbering your answers.

5. Obviously, Malwarebytes and Kaspersky Online Scanner detected nothing. My computer wouldn't let me install the new Java. It also wouldn't let me uninstall the old Javas. I'd get this message that "Windows Installer" wasn't available when my computer was in Safe Mode. If I put my computer in normal mode, it does not work. Nothing loads, so I can't really do anything like uninstall and install programs. I spent at least two hours trying various things to update the Java, etc. Before, my computer would work for at least a few minutes in normal mode, but it doesn't work at all now. When I turn the computer on normally, it takes much longer to load than it has even during the past few days.
Not a Malware Issues

At this stage your machine looks to be clean of malware, so the problems you are experiencing are not likely to be malware related. I think the best and fastest solution for you is to post in our Microsoft Windows™ forum. They specialize in handling problems like this so you are certain to get expert assistance and a speedy resolution is very likely. You will want to make sure that you include a link to this thread, so that the Tech Team can see what we have already done.

Once last thing to take care of first.

OTL Clean-Up
Clean up with OTL:
  • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTL main screen, press the CLEANUP button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.
I'm sorry that I could not be of more help to you, and I wish you the best of luck with solving your computer problems. If you have any questions or require any other assistance please let me know.
Alright, SweetTech. I had suspected it was a malware issue because I really did have a virus right before this happened. I did a System Restore, which got rid of the virus, but then my computer started being really slow. Thus, I connected the two events, thinking that the virus still had some hold on my computer. Out of curiosity, why would I suddenly start having problems with Windows right after I had and got rid of a virus? Or is it just coincidence? I'll try to post in the Windows forum later today, as I'm not on the affected computer right now. First, I'll complete the OTL cleanup, which I haven't done yet but will do once I get home and have my computer with me. I guess I'll post on this thread once I have done the OTL cleanup. Thanks again, SweetTech. I appreciate it.
