This all started last night when I went on a well known electronic's company website and decided I needed to ask a question. I clicked a link to chat with a representative online and a popup came up telling me I had to download an exe file in order to proceed. I did that and Avira went wild, saying there was a trojan. I tried to find out what the trojan was and was pretty sure it was making the assumption that the exe file was the trojan so I tried to continue but that didn't work so I backed off it.

I might also add that yesterday, a tech installed my son's Linksys router on this computer to enable my laptop and his X-Box 360 to get online at the same time and now I keep getting a popup every time I reboot, asking me if I want to enable "PortMagic". I have just been clicking that off because I don't know what it will do.

Last night before I went to bed, I let SpyBot run and my son got up this morning before me, saw the screen and doesn't remember what he did. He said there was also a popup from Avira about a "bad file" and I believe he denied it, then proceeded to go online. He said he wasn't on very long and the computer froze up.

I have been working with this all day. I used SpyBot in Safe Mode, twice, and it froze up on me both times. I have to just keep shutting the computer off manually because it's freezing up, dead. I could not navigate to anywhere or do anything until just now. The computer is running like it is going at a baud rate of 200, even offline. lol

I ran MalwareBytes twice and the first time in Safe Mode. It isolated 2 trojans and I told it to delete it. I am not sure if I was supposed to do that or to quarantine. I hunted down the logs from Spybot and MalwareBytes while I was in Safe Mode and am also including those.

I also got a Windows error which I have never seen before. It said Windows had experienced a serious problem and to forward it on to Microsoft, which I did. I couldn't copy the error but I was able to do a screen shot of it if anyone wants to see that?

Here is a Hijackthis log. Someone please help.

Thankyou!!

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package. If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi, The computer is worse. It is lagging and freezing so badly, I don't even know if I can get online with it to download any of those programs. I am posting using my laptop instead. Is it possible to download those programs to a flash drive, then pull them off onto the deskop of the Win XP computer that is so messed up? Last night I ran MalwareBytes again, in Safe Mode because it froze up on me all day the day before and all day yesterday, every time I ran any antivirus programs. I could see there were 3 more instances of the trojan.droper this time instead of the original 2. Oh and I did run ATF on it last night before I ran SpyBot, again. SpyBot found some type of errors that were either problems with SpyBot, itself, or the computer and it said to see the log afterwards but there was no log that I could find. If I can get it online to download anything, can I run any of those programs in Safe Mode? That seems to be the only way it will stop freezing. I will wait until I hear back from you about the flash drive and Safe Mode before I actually do anything. I'll go ahead and start, though, and see if I can get it online. Thanks!

After the above use the flashdrive and copy them over to run them.
Ok, it's going well so far. I disabled Avira as instructed and am attempting to run ComboFix now. It has twice had a long popup come up that says Avira is running and has a list of that name about 50 lines long. Weird! What should I do?
Ok, I had to click off the "warning" twice and after the 2nd time, a blue DOS type window opened and is scanning, I presume? Is this correct?
Also, I could not find Anti_Malware_Pro in add/remove programs and I do not recall downloading that. I only download what you guys tell me to do. ;)
OK, here is the log. The computer is starting to freeze up again. I take it that it's ok to go ahead and activate Avira??

Ok, downloaded mbr.exe to the desktop, pasted mbr.exe -f into RUN and hit enter. A black window popped up, ran a real short scan then it disappears. It just says something about a rootkit possibly being detected. I ran it 3 separate times because I thought there would be a log but so far nothing. I am letting it sit there for now, although the program closed. What next?
