Hi,

Updates and upgrades

You have an older version of Adobe Reader. You can download the current version HERE

You may want to consider Foxit Reader instead. It may be a bit lighter on resources.

Visit their support forum
Foxit Forum

In either case you should uninstall Adobe Reader first. Be sure to move any PDF documents to another folder first though.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
You can delete JavaRa.Zip, and the unzipped JavaRa.exe now.

Install Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 18

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 18 and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 18 The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and Save the file to your Desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u18-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go back to your Control Panel and click the Java icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button.
  • here are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
  • Applications and Applets
  • Trace and Log Files
[*]Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window.

Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
[*]Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window.

[*]Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

[*]Delete jre-6u18-windows-i586.exe from your desktop.

Hi,

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".
This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:
  • Make your Internet Explorer More Secure
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab.
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.

      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS - This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Thank you so much for the help!!!!!!! I have always used Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. Is Explorer a safer browser? Also, if I opted for automatic updates for Windows, do I still need to visit the site to check for updates? thanks!
IE has come a long way on improving itself especially the latest version 8 which effectively makes it as competitive as any other browsers out there. My personal preference would be on Firefox simply because of its ability to customize to the way you like, so it is up to you to decide. - You are advised to go to Microsoft's website to check on any updates even though you have the automatic updates enabled (most of the time some people may ignore the notifications of installing the updates). Unless you always make sure yourself that you install the updates for your computer whenever you received notifications, or you can choose to have computer install it automatically. Hope that answers your question. :) Any more questions? Feel free to ask.
