Virus? "End Program -n"

When I shut down my Windows XP laptop I get the message "End Program -n" "Ending Program Please Wait". I could click "End Now". If I don't it will eventually change to the message "This Program is not responding". Then I have the choice of clicking "End Now" or "Cancel". Of course, I need to click "End Now" to get it to close.

The Avast virus scan comes up clean.

Here's my Hijackthis.log:

Thanks for your help.

I get the message "End Program -n"

Does it offer any other information - filename, program name etc?

not really…It's just a usual-blue-box type of thing that you get when windows has trouble shutting down a program when you shut down the computer (but have left other programs running).

For better or worse, I haven't been receiving that error beginning today. I've shut down numerous times to see if I can recreate the problem, but it hasn't popped up at all. So, I'm not sure what to make of that development.

What do you think? Was this just a goofy Windows thing?

I appreciate your help & insight.

Below is the most recent log file from HijackThis. The only difference I see (after a quick scan) is a new line for "C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe".

Thanks.

http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintas…ibrary/wuauclt/

The shut-down program is difficult to analyse given the limited information. When Windows shuts down a program it normally offers a filename if it is having trouble. On my system that used to be a file called ccapp.exe which was part of Norton anti-virus and never liked to shut down unless it was in it's own time.

See if you can recreate the issue and look for any other information in the notification.

I've attached a screen shot of the error message.

I wonder if it's a problem with Firefox.

When I was shutting down, the message popped up, so I grabbed a screen shot & then tried to bring up Firefox so that I could post it here. However I then got the message "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."

In Windows Task Manager, on the Processes tab, firefox.exe was using nearly all of the CPU. I killed that & then was able to open up a Firefox browser.

I think that's my answer but would love to hear your input.

To be honest, i've not come across such a poor attempt at informing a user of a problem in quite some time - I think congratulations are in order. Are you shutting down Firefox before trying to shut down the computer, or just letting Windows deal with it at close down?

aw, shucks. Thanks. Sometimes I surprise myself.

In general, I self-close all applications before I shut down, but Firefox is, usually, one of the last apps I use, so I have a feeling that whatever firefox is doing when I close it just takes too long and doesn't finish before the Windows shut down process commences.

Thanks for you help. I think this thread may be closed.
