hi guys thought id come back to the experts with some problems - malware bytes picked up hijack.userinit .backdoorbot and spywareZbot after my win xp firewall kept turning itself off and when i attempted to log in a 'usernit.exe ' error prevented me from doing so. after a reboot i ran an updated malware bytes full scan where it got rid rid of the above multiple infections - system seems clear after a rerun of malware antibytes but just want to make sure before i do anything on the pc - awaiting instructions thansk guys. matts
The fact that your scan showed the existence of "backdoors" means that somebody in a remote location could access your PC as if they were sat in front of it, and this poses a number of problems. There is no way of knowing how many malicious files may have been dropped on your hard drive, legitimate files patched or replaced, and if security settings have been lowered to make your PC easier to infect in the future. This makes the most sensible course of action backing up any important files and then reformatting and reinstalling your operating system. You should also be aware that if you use the computer for online banking or shopping that card and login details could have been compromised and you should use another PC to change what you can and monitor any accounts and cards that you have access/used to make sure that nothing is amiss. Sorry it isn't better news.
thanks for the reply. any other help rather then nuking my system ? ive used this site a few times and have got rid of some nasty stuff without having to reformat and reinstall. their must be another option
There are a number of options, but the best one in my opinion is to reformat and reinstall. I can't comment on what was removed previously, or whether I would have attempted to remove it rather than reformat and reinstall, but that doesn't have any relevance to the current issues you are having.
