I have been having an issue with windows xp for a while now. I was having some other issues that are mostly resolved (but not completely) but don't want to move on until i get this done. Here is a link to other issue and what we have tried:

Windows xp keeps offering me updates (they are already installed on computer) but it keeps offering them. I have had this problem a few times before and the windows people usually go in and do registry changes however bc it keeps happening (about 3-4 times over the last couple of years) they want me to uninstall and reinstall windows but i can't find my cd.

here is the updates being offered: Update for Windows XP (KB976098) Error Code: 0x8007F0F4
Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB973688) Error Code: 0x64C

I have been trying to do this since at least dec 10th….windows people can t resolve and have told me to borrow a windows xp disk from someone but i have not found one yet….any help please :)

ps..not really computer saavy but will do my best

thanks to any and all help :)
The easiest way to fix this should be to tell Automatic Updates to not offer those the next time it happens. Uncheck the box next to those updates, then click Next or Go (I forget which). You will then get a popup window where you can check to tell MS to not offer this update again.

Also, see if there are log files in C:\Windows for those updates.

KB976098.log
KB973688.log

If yes, zip them into one file (or individual .zip files) and upload them here and place a link to them in your next post. Use Browse, Upload and Manage Current Attachments below the message input area to get them uploaded here. That may tell us something, not sure.

Another possibility is that the Software Distribution folder is corrupted:

Turn off Automatic Update Service
1) Run Services. msc then ok
2) Rt. click Automatic Update Service
3) Stop the service

Rename the Software Distribution folder
1) Run explorer %systemroot%
2) Rt. click The SoftwareDistribution folder
3) Rename it to SoftwareDistribution.old
4) Enter to secure the change
5) Start
6) Run services.msc
7) Rt. click Automatic Update Services
8) Click Start

Turn on Automatic Update Service
1) Run Services. msc then ok
2) Rt. click Automatic Update Service
3) Start the service
I'm sorry but i am not computer saavy…..I have gone through so many steps with a great person from here and someone from windows and they could not figure this out. I cannot find a place to try to uncheck these updates. and how can i find (i need exact steps–sorry) the log files??? how do i zip them once i find them? after this i can try other steps…i'm really sorry but i am not good at this :( people at windows took over my computer and tried …..but then i got a second guy who was a jerk (excuse my mouth :) thanks
Not a problem, we all have to start somewhere

Try the following:

Click on Start then Run. Type sysdm.cpl and press Enter. That will open the System Properties dialog. Click on the Automatic Updates tab then select the radio button next to Notify me but don't automatically download or install them.. Click OK to close the dialog (window).

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:
Click on Start then Run, type services.msc and press Enter.
Right-click on Automatic Updates then click on Stop.
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:
Click on Start then Run, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution and press Enter.
In the Windows Explorer window, open the Download folder (double click on it) and delete its contents (all of it).
Close the window. The Download folder contents will be recreated then next time you run Windows Update, hopefully this time with the correct information.

3. Tell Windows Update not to show update again
Click on Start then Windows Update. Select Custom and allow the scan to
complete. Uncheck/deselect KB976098 and KB973688 and hide each by selecting Don't show me this update
again
.

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:
Click on Start then Run, type services.msc and press Enter.
Right-click Automatic Updates and click on Start.
(Starting the service will take a moment)

Let's see how things stand after that. Post back with any questions or concerns. Remember, the only dumb question is the one not asked :D
sorry it took me so long to get back to you…my dog passed away and then i got bronchitis and i'm just now starting to get out of bed :( I tried the things you told me and i will try for a couple of days and see how it goes !
i am still having a problem but don't know if it is connected. when i click on links….it takes me to a blank page sometimes. And (for example) i was on facebook and tried to go to another favorite page–when i clicked on the other page it won't leave facebook. it get stuck–it seems like its working but says done on the bottom…it's quite annoying. any suggestions on this issue or know where to post? thanks i'm running firefox
Sorry to hear about your dog and your illness.

Try this for the FireFox problem.

Open a command prompt and enter ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter. See if that helps.

If that doesn't help, download and run Dial-a-fix. Click on >> Skip to download section to download it. Unzip it then run dial-a-fix.exe. No install needed.

Click on the double click the green check marks at the bottom of the window then click on GO. Wait for it to complete then reboot.
I feel like a dummy….how do you open a command prompt???? I don't want to do anything wrong so i want to make sure i'm doing everything perfect! sorry :)
Sorry about that, I should have included instructions for opening a command prompt. Just FYI, there are two ways to do it. 1. Click on Start then Run, type cmd and press Enter or click OK. 2. Click on Start, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt.
I"ve done both: only problem is with the dial a fix–i keep getting error 127 c:\windows\system32\iesetup.dll is not registerable or file is corrupt. your version is 8.00.6001.18702 please contact [removed] so exception can be made Is this an issue or should i ignore it? I will try it for a couple of days and post back unless you say that the above is an issue than we can try whatever you suggest :) and thanks ….i am feeling a bit better…:)
it's weird but my computer is still giving me the issue…..for instance i clicked on the link it sends from here and it opens a new tab but it says untitled and nothing comes up. I have to keep clicking a few times before it comes up…any other suggestions? Its a sometimes thing…sometimes it works fine but at least twice a day it doesn't work any suggestions?
