I was browsing images on my boyfriend's computer tonight and somehow I downloaded a program called "malware defense." I tried to remove it from the control panel, but it then froze his computer. When I restarted it I got this message: aluschedulersvc.exe – application error the exception breakpoint a breakpoint has been reached (0x80000003) occured in the application at location 0x004118c4 click on OK to terminate the program click on CANCEL to debug the program then the computer freezes and the task bar won't load. I can load the computer in safe mode but I'm really not sure what to do. i am on my laptop right now. If anyone could help me out of this situation that would really be great. Thanks so much for reading. EDIT: sorry I didn't include more information about what it is in the title. I really don't know. :( I really can't follow through with the instructions on the "are you infected?" page since the computer won't load any web pages in safe mode. Perhaps someone can assist me with this also?
yes, i have it loaded as such now. EDIT: should I sign in as Administrator or under my boyfriend's account? EDIT 2: I signed in as an administrator. I can't load any web pages, I think this is because the computer is using a wireless card that isn't wokring in safe mode. We don't have a wired connection for this computer…
Hi Faithmarie,

Your boyfriend's account.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
  • Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.

When running these tools, should you recieve a warning that they are infected, if possible close the warnings with X. These are fake alerts generated by the malware.

Note: If this is a Vista machine, you will need to Right Click the exe and select "Run as Adminstrator" instead of double clicking.

NEXT

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.

Please post back with
  • GMER log
  • both OTL logs
Thanks
Like I said I can't access internet pages without the wireless network… Is there a way I can just enable my wireless card in safe mode? Or put them on a flash drive from this computer and transfer them to the other computer while it is in safe mode?
Hi Faithmarie,

Ok, I didn't realize it was a wireless connection.

Yes we can transfer the tools to the infected computer. Some steps to take first.

As a precaution to avoid infecting the clean computer:

On the clean computer

Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder…it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Plug the flashdrive in before you run the tool.

Next

Download the requested tools to the flashdrive.

On the infected computer,

Transfer the tools directly to the computer's Desktop and follow the previous instructions for running them.

Thanks
I can't get GMER to work. It says "this service cannot be loaded in safe mode." :(

< End of report >
I got the GMER to run by renaming the file. I'll edit this post with it in a moment. :) My, this is taking awhile. I hope that's normal! Also, is it bad that I ran GMER after I ran OTL? Does the order matter?
Hi faithmarie, Good job in renaming GMER. No it doesn't matter which order. These two tools are just being used for reporting. The scan can take awhile but will tell us if something is buried.
The computer just locked up almost two hours into the scan. I believe it may be overheating since it's only operating on one fan. It found quite a few "(size mismatch)" and some highlighted red files. I don't think it's really necessary to scan the entire C drive since my boyfriend has a very large amount of video games on there and it wasn't finding anything in any of those. Is there anyway I can make the scan less lengthy? perhaps just show you the library and reg files that were noted in red? Very frustrating. :(
