Hello,

I've actually got several problems but the topic title field wasn't long enough for all of them so I just used the Google search results one as the title.

My problems are:

1) Google search results sometimes (but not always) redirect to ads in both Firefox and IE. This only affects Google. Other search engines work fine.

2) Every few days my computer will take a long time to login and only get as far as showing my desktop (but no icons and no taskbar). In order to get it working properly again I have to use MSCONFIG to disable all of the startup programs and then restart. After this I can re-enable the startup programs and the machine will be fine again for a few days. When this problem happens I cannot boot in safe mode, it just goes into a reboot loop if I attempt safe mode.

3) This problem has only just come to light when I was preparing to post my thread on these forums but when I run a GMER scan the PC crashes and restarts. If I'm scanning files it happens at about the same point in the file scan every time and if I untick the files box then it seems to reboot a few minutes after I start the scan, even if I've long since saved the log and exited GMER.

For this reason, my GMER log (below) is not complete, because I could not get it to run without the machine rebooting when I had "Files" ticked, so I ran a scan with Files unticked because I presumed you guys would prefer to have something rather than nothing at all.

That's my description of the problem, now here are my logs. I've removed all of the stuff that MBAM found but I'm afraid it hasn't fixed the problems:

============= FINISH: 20:10:00.31 ===============
Hi there,

Before we begin, I have to warn you that MBAM found indications of a Backdoor infection on your system. This is a very serious type of infection, which can allow an attacker full, remote access to your system. Since there is no way of knowing what changes have been made to your system, the only way to be 100% sure you are clean is by formatting. At the very least, it would be worth changing all your passwords to anything containing personal information (email, online banking) from a non-infected machine. If you wish to format, let me know and I can provide some additional information.

==============================

If you wish to continue cleaning the computer, please do the following.

Please download ComboFix to your desktop from one of these locations. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 2
Link 3

[external image: Posted Image]

IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making IE the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please advise.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Hi JP, thank you for helping me.

If it's ok with you I'd like for us to have a go at cleaning the system first and if we run into trouble then I'll decide whether to reformat as a last resort.

Is that ok?

I ran ComboFix and the log is below, but I did get one error message right at the beginning - it told me Comodo AV was still running but I uninstalled this weeks ago when I changed to using Avira Antivir and I was very careful to make sure I removed all of the Comodo stuff before I began to install Avira so I'm not sure how this happened but anyway, ComboFix still seemed to run ok so here's the output:

Hi,

Please post the content of the following log:
C:\QooBox\Add-Remove Program.txt

Click Start >> Run then copy/paste this command and hit Enter:
reg add "HKLM\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon" /v Userinit /d "c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,"

How's the machine running now?
Hey, The Add-Remove Progs log is pasted below. I did the registry thing you said and it said the value already exists and asked me if I wanted to overwrite it so I said yes, hopefully that was the right thing to do. Then I restarted and checked Google again but the search results are still redirecting to ads, I'm afraid. Here is the log output you asked for: 7-Zip 4.65 ABC (remove only) Ad-Aware Adobe Bridge 1.0 Adobe Common File Installer Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin Adobe Flash Player ActiveX Adobe Help Center 1.0 Adobe Photoshop CS2 Adobe Reader 8 Adobe Stock Photos 1.0 AGEIA PhysX v7.05.17 AMD Athlon 64 Processor Driver Apple Application Support Apple Mobile Device Support Apple Software Update ATI - Software Uninstall Utility ATI AVIVO Codecs ATI Catalyst Control Center ATI Display Driver ATI Problem Report Wizard µTorrent AVI/MPEG/RM/WMV Joiner 4.81 Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus Belkin Wireless Network Monitor Utility and Driver (USB) BioShock Bonjour Bookmark Converter 3.2 (beta 2) Bulk Rename Utility [removed] Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Call of Duty® 4 - Modern Warfare™ Catalyst Control Center - Branding Catalyst Control Center Core Implementation Catalyst Control Center Graphics Full Existing Catalyst Control Center Graphics Full New Catalyst Control Center Graphics Light Catalyst Control Center Graphics Previews Common Catalyst Control Center HydraVision Full ccc-core-preinstall ccc-core-static ccc-utility CCC Help English COMODO System-Cleaner Counter-Strike CPUID CPU-Z 1.52.2 Crysis® Digital Video Repair 1.0 ERUNT 1.1j Eye-One Match 3.2 FastStone Image Viewer 3.2 FileZilla (remove only) FLAC 1.2.1b (remove only) FreshDiagnose Garmin Communicator Plugin Garmin MapSource Garmin Training Center 3.3.4 Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter GreedyTorrent v1.01 beta build 170 Ground Control Half-Life 2: Lost Coast Half-Life® 2 Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 150 Drivers HijackThis 2.0.2 Hotfix for Windows XP (KB909394) InCD (Ahead Software) iTunes Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1 Karen's 'Net Monitor Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Microsoft ActiveSync Microsoft Kernel-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.5 Microsoft Office 2003 Primary Interop Assemblies Microsoft Office Excel Viewer 2003 Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.17 Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office Runtime MotionBased Agent Motorola Driver Installation 3.7.0 Motorola Phone Tools Mozilla Firefox (3.0.11) MSXML 6.0 Parser MyDVD Nero - Burning Rom (Web installer) Outpost Firewall 2009 Photomatix Pro version 2.2.1 PIXresizer 2.0.3 PowerDVD PunkBuster Services QuickTime RAR Recovery Toolbox 1.1 RawShooter essentials 2005 Realtek AC'97 Audio S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl Sonic Foundry Sound Forge 6.0 Spybot - Search & Destroy Steam™ SyncMyCal TextCrawler 1.1.2 Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter® 2 Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 TomTom HOME 2.7.3.1894 TomTom HOME Visual Studio Merge Modules TrueCrypt Turbo Lister 2 Tyre Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3 SE VIA Integrated Setup Wizard VideoLAN VLC media player 0.8.6b Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office Second Edition Runtime WebFldrs XP Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803) Windows Media Encoder 9 Series Windows Media Format Runtime Windows XP Service Pack 2 WinRAR archiver Xilisoft DVD Ripper Platinum 4
COMODO System-Cleaner
Did you install this separately to Comodo AntiVirus/Firewall? If not, go into Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove it. Might be why ComboFix picked up COMODO.

Can you try GMER once more with "Files" checked? Please also run MBAM again and update it, then run a Quick Scan. If it finds anything, please post the log.

What kind of ad-sites are you being redirected to?
I did install Comodo System Cleaner myself, separately, yes… But I'm happy to remove it if you think it might be causing problems.

The kind of sites I'm being redirected to are mostly ads but the occasionally I'll get one that opens little dialog boxes telling me I'm infected and asking me to click OK (which I obviously don't). Normally what happens is I click a Google results link and then it first goes to one site that then immediately redirects to second site.

Here are two examples:

Example 1:
The Google link goes to:
http://sleepapneaphysicians.com/result.php?Keywords=time+and+date&r=bb13eeb5dfefdee34f746282604319bdc1f5773f864df83d29264c96db16a74ec0dd04fa12
f89d86417252865d9dc8b4&Submit=Go

Which immediately redirects to:
http://www.savecompare.com/?mkt=uk&keywords=Dating&referrer=lsm&category=entertain&kwid=time%20and%20date&lpid=24249-5002
Which is an advert page and mostly harmless.

Example 2:
The Google link goes to:
http://sealbeachschools.com/result.php?Keywords=tesco&r=b2c1e2d8f5affd3cef6071f5aa9c0fcdfbfe81e068eb739f9a0fa281ddb62b19d04e9b9f59
3435861b19f938911c7fca&Submit=Go

Which immediately redirects to:
http://hanawascanner010.com/security1/?aid=10&phpID=MTI2MjQ3NzU0OA==
Which is one of the pages that opens little dialog boxes trying to get me to install things.

I updated MBAM and ran it again. It found a few more backdoor things which I guess is a bad sign. The log is below. I'm going to run GMER again now and will let you know what happens in a separate post.

I just tried GMER again but it's still crashing / restarting, sorry.

A couple of things that may help you:

  • After GMER crashed and rebooted I logged in as normal and then it immediately rebooted again, a second time. But when it came back up for the third time it was ok.
  • GMER seems to crash just after it finishes scanning C:\Documents and Settings\Jamey\Application Data\Apple Computer …This folder takes a while because of the backups in there and it's hard to tell exactly where GMER quits but I think it's immediately after this folder. The next three folders after this would be:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jamey\Application Data\ATI
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jamey\Application Data\Bioshock
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jamey\Application Data\dvdcss

I don't know if any of that is helpful at all.
Hmm, MBAM is only finding leftovers by the looks of things.

Please try this Rootkit scan instead of GMER.
  • Download RootRepeal from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop.
  • Open [external image: Posted Image] on your desktop.
  • Click the [external image: Posted Image] tab.
  • Click the [external image: Posted Image] button.
  • In the Select Scan dialog, check
[external image: Posted Image](Please check Files as well, sorry, bad image)
  • Push Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, push the [external image: Posted Image] button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Please post this log in your next reply.

If that doesn't work either, try rebooting into Safe Mode (tap F8 before Windows loads) and try either scan from there as well.
RootRepeal ran fine (didn't even need to use Safe Mode) with files checked. Bingo.

Run RootRepeal again, then click the Files tab, then Scan. When it finished, locate this entry on the list:

Right-click it and select Force Delete.

Reboot your computer, and let me know if redirects persist.

Hi, no joy I'm afraid. The redirects are still persisting, sorry. I ran RootRepeal again like you said and did the force delete on that file and then rebooted but the very first Google link I clicked after the reboot was redirected. So I ren RootRepeal again and the file didn't show up (so I guess it really did get deleted) but I did get a notification from Avira Antivir halfway through the RootRepeal scan to tell me about a trojan DLL in the System32 folder, which I promptly allowed Antivir to delete.
OK, this is getting annoying now hehe. What you have may be fairly new, since searching for your symptoms returns few hits. I'd like to try a couple of scans.

First, download and run this:
http://jpshortstuff.247fixes.com/Kenco.exe
A log should pop-up (Kenco.log on your Desktop), please post it.

Next, this one:
http://jpshortstuff.247fixes.com/LockSearch.exe
Hit 1 at the prompt, and post the log that pops up. (may take a minute or two to scan)

Please run DDS again and post DDS.txt, and finally RootRepeal again - but check all the boxes this time.

Did Avira give you trojan name or anything to go by?
Avira did tell me the name of the trojan but stupidly I forgot to make a note of it, really sorry… However I think it might have been in response to the Google redirect I got after I tested the machine following the deletion of C:\WINDOWS\system32\msqxjd32.exe because it popped up pretty soon after I closed Firefox when I saw the little dialog boxes popping up with false "you are infected" messages.

Here are the four logs you asked for, I'm probably gonna go to bed now (might be online for another 30 mins or so) so it might be tomorrow before my next reply but I'd just like to say a big thank you for all the help so far, I really, really appreciate you taking the time to do this, thank you.:
