my first time here. dont know much about computers. i have XP, Norton Internet security. few days ago some thing happened and pop ups started appearing. norton kept telling me there is some attack that it has blocked. i have winpatrol scotty and it prompted me few changes to files and urls etc etc. i installed ad-ware and stopzilla and tried to remove the infections. problems were resolved about 40%. then i got rid of stopzilla because since stopzilla installation mystry files started appearing in the temp folder of windows taking space upto 8GB and i received low space warning(thats how i know that my temp folder was pilling up). this happened couple of time. now yesterday few messages came that my computer is infected i need to install a software called antivirus. i canceled it. and then in the morning after frest boot this message came. =============== aluschedulersvc.exe - application error the exception breakpoint a breakpoint has been reached. (0x80000003) occured in the application at location 0x004118c4. click on OK to terminate the programm click on CANCEL to debug the program =============== my norton internet security is completely irresponsive. i started the computer in safe mode to do a full scan but it only scans 4000 files or so and shows a cookie threat and then stops. normally i have 800000 files on my computer that norton scans every wek. also i have noticed, my IE closes itself in the middle of whatever i am doing. numlock key is normally on when i start the computer but its always off now. if i highlight and copy some text from the web page, it wvanishes from the memory very soon (happens when IE shuts itself) pop ups are still coming. also before i noticed that i did a search on yahoo and then click on my desired search result and it would open some other website intead of the link that i clicked. hopping to receive some help here. thanks
Hi,

Please do the following:

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)
Note If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
First of all thanks for the reply. I did as per your instructions. I was able to get the log files from exehelper and dds. But with the GMER rootkill, I am able to download and extract it but cant run it. When I double click it, mouse curses shows its busy and then It comes to normal curser. I looked in the task manager processes. It shows that gmer is running but I can not see it. I have tried ending the process from there and start again but it still does not show up. I have even tried it by rebooting my system. ============= exeHelper=========== exeHelper by Raktor Build 20091220 Run at 05:22:10 on 01/03/10 Now searching… Checking for numerical processes… Checking for sysguard processes… Checking for bad processes… Checking for bad files… Checking for bad registry entries… Resetting filetype association for .exe Resetting filetype association for .com Resetting userinit and shell values… Resetting policies… –Finished– ==========DDS=========== I have attached both the files in zip format. When ever I reboot my system and after entring the admin password and before the desktop shows up it takes about 3-4 minutes doing nothing(means I don’t see anything happening and no busy redlight on casing) then it come to life and all icons show up one by one and few error messages come. I have saved those error messages and attaching with this message. I thought they might be helpful to you to diagnose the problem. Also some times when there is no window running an audio starts on the computer for some advertisements and I don’t know how and where it comes from. Also a messages for the memory and when I press ok or cancel it says my system will restart in 59 seconds and then it restarts. Addition:- I couldn’t attach the error messages photos because of less space available. But I have attached the memory thing I just mentiond before. Thanks again a lot sir.

Hi,

You have a rootkit on board which is preventing you from running GMER.

please do the following:

Download Combofix from either of the links below. You must rename it to tranq.exe before saving it.
Save it to your desktop. Change the save as file type to "all files"

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, delete it, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
  • Tools->Options->Main tab
  • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

Link 1
Link 2

———————————————————–

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    ———————————————————–

  • NOTE: If ComboFix asks to install the Recovery Console, please ALLOW it to do so.

    ———————————————————–

  • Double click on the renamed ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.

———————————————————–

i tried to run it as per your instructions. and said real time protection which is norton internet security in my case is on and that i should turn that off or some unpredictable results will happen or machine will get damaged. now i can not run norton at all. when ever i double click it, nothing happens. but combofix tells me its working. what do i do
Hi, See if you can access Task manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del) > Processes tab, locate anything symantec or Norton and end process, then run ComboFix, even if it complains.

Hi,

please do the following:

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

http://forums.whatthetech.com/Rouge_AV_Norton_not_responding_all_t109236.html&view=findpost&p=621436#entry621436

Collect::
c:\windows\system32\krl32mainweq.dll
c:\windows\tawytop.com
c:\documents and settings\Mianz\Local Settings\Application Data\itotely.sys
c:\program files\Common Files\atuq.ban
c:\documents and settings\Mianz\Local Settings\Application Data\loly.sys
c:\program files\Common Files\qibyrofe.pif
c:\windows\gecyny.sys
c:\documents and settings\Mianz\Application Data\daha.exe
c:\documents and settings\Mianz\Application Data\daha.exe
c:\windows\qyki.dat
c:\program files\Common Files\cazojevi._dl
c:\windows\system32\uryl.dll
c:\windows\rival.bin

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save …

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

**Note**
When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box–do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

NEXT:
  • Please open your MalwareBytes AntiMalware Program
  • Click the Update Tab and search for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <– very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Run an on-line scan with Kaspersky

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky On-line Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.
The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

In your next reply please include
  • ComboFix log
  • MBAM Log
  • Kaspersky report

Hi,

Please run the following program:

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
It's normal after running TFC cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Please post a fresh DDS and Attach.txt and advise how your computer is running now and if there are any outstanding issues.
hi sorry for the late reply, it was night and i fell asleep and then i had to go to work. system is running smooth. i dont see any issue at the moment. everything is working fine. norton is working. no popups or any funny thing that was happening before. i thank you for this all. as asked i have attached dds and attach files with this message as zip files. there is one change i have noticed, at the time of startup there is a screen that show up for less than a second giving two options of starting sequence, windows xp or console something. then it selects windows xp itself and system boots normally. that black background screen shows up only for a friction of a second. what is that.

Hi,

The option screen you are seeing is the installation of the Recovery Console. This is excellent to have installed on your system. Should your system crash for whatever reason. Quite often access can be gained through the recovery console and issues can often be resolved, so please leave it in place.

The logs, look clean, just some housekeeping to do now.

Please do the following:

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 17. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

  • It is good security practice to change your passwords to all your online accounts on a fairly regular basis, this is especially true after an infection. Refer to this Microsoft article
Strong passwords: How to create and use them

Then consider a password keeper, to keep all your passwords safe.
  • Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

  • Make Internet Explorer more secure
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    • Click on the Security tab
    • Click Reset all zones to default level
    • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
    • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
    • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
    • Green to go
    • Yellow for caution
    • Red to stop
WOT has an addon available for both Firefox, IE and chrome.

  • Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
    Here

  • Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories. This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.
  • In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:
    Think Prevention.
PC Safety and Security–What Do I Need?.

**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Please respond one last time so we can consider the thread resolved and close it, thank-you.
