I suspect that I have a virus, potentially the Vundo.JD virus.

Symptoms:
* Slow computer response
* A stock analysis application no longer will launch - no changes or other software had been installed other than possible Windows Upates
* Windows Defender no longer runs at startup nor does it check for automatic updates
* Web URL's at times launch differenct sites, typically advertising and/or surveys
* Survey requests pop-up occasionally in Internet Explorer
* AVG virus scan identified the presence of Vundo.JD and indicated its removal
* Difficulty in preparing analysis files for submittal to What-the-Tech…scans continued to slow down as time progressed

Actions taken:
* Uninstalled MTPredictor application and re-installed. When launched the MTPredictor process shows in the Windows Task Manager at 50% useage but the software does not launch
* Uninstalled AVG and Zone Alarm, then uninstall and re-install MTPredictor. Same results as before.
* Attempt to find Windows Defender setting to launch at startup…didn't find an option
* atapi.sys date was 12/26/2009…AVG forum thread suggested atapi.sys may have been attacked and recommended replacing with a known good copy. I renamed atapi.sys to atapi[INFECTED].sys and immediately another atapi.sys appeared. I copied atapi.sys from another computer over the existing successfully but within 30 seconds it was modified.
* Followed What-the-Tech instructions as noted below…
* Ran the ATF cleaner
* Attempted to run SysRestorePoint unsuccessfully 2x. Used XP System Restore to create a restore point instead. Note: SysRestorePoint showed as an active process 2x in Windows Task Manager consuming 50% of resources.
* Successfully ran ERUNT to backup the registry
* Ran MBAM scan successfully and pasted the results at the end of this post showing infections. Ran a second time with no infections, also pasted results.
* Ran GMER Rootkit Scan with difficulty. 2x it resulted in the computer re-booting during the scan. The third attempt was made AFTER running DDS (see below)
* Ran DDS and pasted the DDS.txt log. Saved but did NOT paste the Attach.txt file per the file's header instructions.
* Ran GMER Rootkit Scan over night. After 7 hours the scan was not complete and the computer was very, very sluggish. At 8 hours I stopped the scan and saved the results pasted below.
* Ran GMER a fourth time, selecting only "Files". This scan ran for about 2 hours and became very, very sluggish. There were NO RESULTS shown when the scan was stopped. Did not attempt again.

============= FINISH: 3:16:02.37 ===============
Due, in part, to the large numbers of HJT logs being posted, there are four things that you need to be aware of.

1) If you have already posted this log at another forum, you need to post here that you have done so and this topic will be closed.
Multiple posting not only ties up valuable resources, but could also result is some unpleasant side-effects for your system if you follow two sets of instructions at the same time.
If, during research, an identical log is identified at another forum, this thread will be closed.

2) If you don't post a meaningful reply to any of my posts within five days, this thread will be closed. Due to limited free time I can only have so many open threads at any one time and if yours isn't active, somebody else's will be.
If, by omission, the thread hasn't be closed after five days and you post, it will just serve as a reminder to me to close it.
Please note that "I just dropped in to say Hi!" isn't a meaningful reply!

3) Malware removal is a tricky business, and malware writers don't tend to worry about the damage their creations do, so it is advisable to back-up all important files BEFORE we start. Although most cases have a successful conclusion, on occasion things don't go according to plan and it is better to be prepared for the worst.

4) Back-ups can get lost or damaged, so make two if the files are that important to you!

Pay a visit to the ESET Online Scanner - IE is preferred for this.
  • Click the ESET Online Scanner button, read the info in the new window, check the appropriate box and click Start.
  • Accept the ActiveX download, and allow it to install.
  • Once this has been completed, you will see the Computer Scan settings page - ensure that you uncheck the "Remove found threats" box and then click Start.
  • The virus signature database will now need to be downloaded, so don't forget to instruct your firewall to permit it if it asks.
  • The above will take a little time, so now is a good time to fire up the kettle and open the biccies.
  • Once the scan has completed you will be shown the results - assuming that the scanner has found anything.
  • Click List of found threats and then Export to text file… and save the log somewhere convenient.
  • You can then close out the scanner - don't bother uninstalling it as you may need to use it again.
  • Please post the contents of this file in your next reply, or let me know that nothing was identified.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Download Sec-Info2.zip from here and save it to your Desktop. You will need to extract the file.
Right click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All…
In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish
You should now see a folder with a file in it - double click Sec-info2.vbs to run it.
Once you have been informed that the script has completed, a text file called Sec-Info.txt should be created in the same folder - you may need to wait a couple of seconds for it to appear..
Please copy and paste the contents of the text file into your next reply and then you can delete both of the folders and their contents.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If you don't already have it, download a copy of HJTInstall.exe from here and save it to your Desktop. If you do, scroll down to the log instructions and let me have a fresh one please.
  • Double click HJTInstall.exe to begin installation.
  • Accept the installation location, which by default is C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis or click the Browse… button if you want to chose somewhere else and then click Install
  • Once HJT has installed, a shortcut will be created on your Desktop and HJT will run automatically.
  • You will need to accept the EULA, if it appears, to be able to use the tool.
  • When HJT opens, click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button.
  • When HJT has finished scanning, a window entitled "hijackthis.log" will open - when you close this window the log will be saved into the Hijackthis folder.
  • Copy and paste this into your next reply.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager…
  • Click Save list… and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Download RootRepeal from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop:
Location 1
Location 2
Location 3
  • Double click RootRepeal.exe to fire up the tool and OK any Windows confirmation if necessary.
  • Ensure that the Report Tab is selected at the bottom.
  • Click the Scan button, check ALL the boxes in the window that appears and then click OK.
  • Check the box next to your main hard drive - usually C: and click OK
  • Put the kettle on and perhaps open a packet of biscuits - the scan will take some time.
  • Once the scan has completed a Notepad window will open with the results in.
  • These results will also be saved to the root of your main drive as \RootRepeal report date time.txt
Let me have a copy of the contents in your next reply.
Here are all the logs you requested….

Take a trip to this webpage for download links and instructions for running Combofix by sUBs: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix *
  • Please be aware that this tool may require the PC to be rebooted so close any programs you have open before you start.
  • When CF has finished, it will produce a log - C:\ComboFix.txt - copy and paste it into your next reply.
  • Post a fresh HJT log as well.
  • Let me know how the PC is behaving.
* There are two points to note from the instructions page:

1) The Recovery Console.

It is recommended that you install this as, in certain circumstances, it may be the difference between a successful repair and a reformat. If you are uncertain as to whether or not you already have the Recovery Console installed, simply run CF and it will prompt you if it does not detect it.
CF will complete some, but not all, of it's removal tasks without the installation of the Console so, should you choose not to allow the installation, you may not get the results you hoped for.

2) Disabling your Anti-Virus.

CF has been the victim of false-positive detections on occasion and a resident AV may incorrectly identify and delete part of the tool which won't do it much good. If you don't disable your AV, you may not get the results you hoped for!
ComboFix did report an error as described below. However, my computer is now running more normally. The stock analysis software will now launch and it doesn't appear as though Internet Explorer is being redirected to survey sights any longer.

Behavior of ComboFix
——————————
* A dialogue box appeared with a message related to a Rootkit noting that a re-boot was required. The dialogue box included an "OK" button.
* After pressing the "OK" button the dialogue box disappeared but the computer appeared to stall
* After about 1 hour I manually rebooted
* ComboFix continued, completing scan stage 50
* At that point a dialogue box appeared…"Application Error: Application Corrupt" with an "OK" button.
* After pressing "OK" ComboFix continued, seemingly finishing normally

Here is the ComboFix log:

OK, i'll need to have a word with sUBs as I don't know why CF would stall and i'd like to know whether this is a serious issue or just one of those glitches that affect all things PC sooner or later. As soon as i've got a reply, i'll be back.
One thought to consider is that Zone Alarm was not disabled. I missed the instruction for firewalls to be disabled until CF was already running. Zone Alarm prompted me for access a couple of times during the process before the dialogue box about the re-boot.
That seems a distinct possibility so we'll carry on and see where that gets us. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here and save it to your Desktop - unless you already have it, in which case skip to the "updating" bit below.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Ensure a checkmark is placed next to both Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version - you'll need to clear it with your firewall.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan and then Scan.
  • When the scan has finished, click OK and then Show Results to view the results - no surprise there!
  • If MBAM finds anything, check the box(es) and click Remove Selected.
  • Please note - Leave unchecked any boxes that have \System Volume Information\ in the filepath. These pose no immediate risk to your PC unless you use System Restore and will be dealt with later.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
Let me have the MBAM log, a fresh HJT log (run in Normal Mode) AND a description of how your PC is behaving.
Computer seems to be running OK except that the stock analysis software doesn't link to the data feed. The software wouldn't even launch before ComboFix was run. However, I had uninstalled the software and had to re-install it after ComboFix so my configuration was lost. I ran the setup to connect to the data feed as instructed by their tech support but the data feed is currently not configured. Is it possible that there is still something that is blocking the configuration?

I don't see anything that I can positively identify as malicious, but that doesn't mean that there isn't something there, or that there is for that matter. I think that as the main symptoms have been resolved that it is unlikely that your PC still has active slime onboard, but work through the following as you have a couple of entries in a log that point to files on your PC that I would like to have checked - if they are still present.

Please go to Jotti's and click on the Browse… button at the top and navigate to the following files in turn, and then click on Submit:

c:\windows\system32\w30Xnol32.dll
c:\windows\system32\s30Xn32.dll

When all the scans have been completed, please copy and paste the results into your next reply.

If this site is busy, try VirusTotal: Click the Browse … button, navigate to the file and double click it and then click the Send button.

You may need to set Windows to show All Hidden Files and Folders - Instructions can be found here.
* These files are hidden to stop you accidentally removing something important.
It is advisable to hide them again after you have done.

It may be that Spybot's active protection, Tea Timer, is interfering with any configuration you are trying, so you could try disabling uit and seeing if that allows you to configure your software:

Step one:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray - It looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol.
    Click on Exit Spybot-S&D Resident
Step two:
  • Open Spybot S&D.
  • Click Mode at the top, select Advanced Mode and confirm it.
  • Go to the bottom of the left hand pane, and select the + symbol to the left of Tools.
  • Also in left panel, clcik Resident to the right of the red and white shield.
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labelled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File > Exit to terminate Spybot.
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Disabling Spybot's Tea Timer did not fix the data feed for my stock program. I have a call into the software's tech support to see if there is something else I am missing. However, since there appears to be additional malware still on the computer maybe it will work once we are finished. Here are the file scans you requested…. • Double click the tool to run it.
  • You can read the screen that appears, or not - the tool runs anyway.
  • When the tool has finished, two Notepad windows will appear.
  • You need to save both as they will disappear when closed.
  • File > Save As… from the Toolbar will allow you to do this.
  • Copy and Paste both logs into your next reply.
  • Please check after posting that both logs are complete.
