Subsequent to writing this inquiry, I had an online chat technical support session with my DSL provider and the support representative remoted into my PC and made some changes in order to try to improve my download and upload speeds (what the DSL provider calls "DSL optimization"). He also ran a registry scan by first downloading an .exe program called "Uniblue Registry Booster" which indicated that the registry on my PC has numerous errors, registering at the highest level on the scanner's "damage level" meter. I am attaching a new Hijackthis log as follows in case the changes that the support representative implemented have remained. The support representative recommended that I call my PC's manufacturer and ask them to either repair or possibly re-install my PC's operating system which he informed me the manufacturer could "talk" me through by phone with me performing the process. My concern with the prospect of either repairing or re-installing my PC's operating system is the possibility of losing data or files.

Please advise on my above new questions in addition to my below original question about "Antivir". Thanks.

Receiving "Antivir" pop-ups and need to shut down and restart in order to get rid of them.

It's strange how a Google search of "Antivir" shows various articles appearing to indicate "Antivir" as a legitimate virus protection program made by Avira and other articles indicating that "Antivir" is illegitimate and is actually malware itself. From experience with malware, I am fairly certain that the "Antivir" pop-ups I am receiving are malware.

The symptoms I am experiencing are slow performance, particularly the loading of videos on websites such as youtube.

The following is my HijackThis log run with HijackThis version 2.0.2.

Just curious - I noticed that there currently is a beta version of HijackThis - v2.0.3. Should I download the beta version 2.0.3 and use it instead of version 2.0.2? I am leery of beta versions which, as I understand it, are not fully developed and are not officially released.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
[external image: Posted Image]
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
  • Then click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Please don't attach the scans / logs, use "copy/paste". .
I completed executing your above directions and have re-booted. Mbam and hijackthis logs are pasted as follows.

Although Mbam detected and removed malware, etc., unfortunately, the behavior of my computer has not improved (e.g. videos still stop, load extremely slow, etc.). There is a file on my desktop called "Thumbs.db" which I scanned with Spybot - Search & Destroy. In the "Heuristic" section of the scan result, it indicates a red circle with an X in it and "Virtumonde.dll" in the status column. Please advise if this is significant to my issues.

There is a file on my desktop called "Thumbs.db"

We're showing hidden files and that is one of them. DO NOT delete it or anything else unless instructed to.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Note: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I completed your above instructions. ComboFix and Hijackthis logs are pasted as follows.

The only potential complication is that when disabling my McAfee security protection suite prior to running the ComboFix scan, there was a drop-down box in the McAfee suite asking when the suite should be re-enabled and I selected the option "60 minutes". There were other options such as "re-enable upon re-start of computer", or "Never", in addition to other shorter time periods. Having never disabled it before (and the McAfee tutorial in the above link "Protective Programs" does not match my particular security suite), I was hesitant to select the option "Never" and since I wasn't sure if a re-start would be part of the ComboFix scanning process, I was also hesitant to select the option "re-enable upon re-start of computer". I think the ComboFix scanning process (which first included the installation of the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console) may have exceeded 60 minutes from the time that I disabled the McAfee suite and that the McAfee firewall and other protection components from the security suite may have possibly automatically re-enabled during the ComboFix scanning process. The McAfee "Detection log" indicates the following two entries that both appeared to have occurred during the ComboFix scan. Please advise how significant this issue is.

1) Detection name: Artemis! A05EE73BFFC5 (Trojan) - Repaired (removed)
File: C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff\Desktop\ComboFix.exe
Process: C:\WINDOWS\PEV.exe
Process description: C:\WINDOWS\PEV.exe

2) Detection name: EICAR test file (Virus) - Quarantined
File: C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff\Local Settings\Temp\Av-test.txt
Process: C:\ComboFix\CF25556.cfxxe
Process description: Windows Command Processor

Unfortunately, the performance of my computer is now noticeably worse than it was prior to the ComboFix scan. Web pages take much longer to load, videos still stop and load extremely slow. Using the web is almost not possible at this point so the urgency of this issue has now heightened. I am hoping that this issue can still be resolved.

In addition, the "Thumbs.db" file still appears on my desktop and is still indicating "Virtumonde.dll" in the Heuristic section of the Spybot - Search & Destroy scan.

I suggest you do this: Uninstall Internet Explorer 8 to return to Internet Explorer 7 on Windows XP Click "Start," and then click "Control Panel." Click "Add or Remove Programs." Check "Show Updates" at the top of the dialog box. Scroll down the list and highlight the version of Internet Explorer 8 that you are running, and then click "Change/Remove." Reboot and let me know how it's running.
I completed your instructions - removed IE8 and IE7 is now running on my computer. Unfortunately, there is no change in performance. Should I remain hopeful? What are the potential outcomes of this situation? Naturally, I hope this situation is still resolvable. Did the McAfee being re-enabled during the ComboFix scan affect this situation? What about the "Thumbs.db" file that still appears on my desktop registering as "Virtumonde.dll" in the Heuristic section of the Spybot - Search & Destroy scan?
"Thumbs.db"

You can delete it if you want.

Did the McAfee being re-enabled during the ComboFix scan affect this situation?

It doesn't appear to have caused any issues with the CF scan.

Receiving "Antivir" pop-ups and need to shut down and restart in order to get rid of them.

I don't see Antivir anywhere in the scans.

I don't see any Malware / virus / spyware.
I suggest you post the above quote in our Windows Forum and get some help from our Tech Team.
1) In regard to your above quote, "I don't see any Malware / virus / spyware", isn't "Virtumonde" a virus? If so, since the" Thumbs.db" file is registering as "Virtumonde.dll" in the Heuristic section of the Spybot - Search & Destroy scan, wouldn't that mean that my PC is infected with the "Virtumonde" virus? 2) Do you happen to know why the performance of my PC is worse after the ComboFix scan? 3) Are the following two actions executed by McAfee significant to this issue?: 1) Detection name: Artemis! A05EE73BFFC5 (Trojan) - Repaired (removed) File: C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff\Desktop\ComboFix.exe Process: C:\WINDOWS\PEV.exe Process description: C:\WINDOWS\PEV.exe 2) Detection name: EICAR test file (Virus) - Quarantined File: C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff\Local Settings\Temp\Av-test.txt Process: C:\ComboFix\CF25556.cfxxe Process description: Windows Command Processor

You can delete it if you want.

Delete c:\Thumbs.db

2) Do you happen to know why the performance of my PC is worse after the ComboFix scan?

c:\windows\system32\knnmp.ini <–That is all CF deleted. I have no idea what's been done or attempted to your computer. All I know is what I've suggested you do.

3) Are the following two actions executed by McAfee significant to this issue?:

All the anti-virus programs will detect combofix as an unwanted program. It does something they can't but should do, remove new infections. That's why we have users disable their anti-virus.
1) Is "Virtumonde" a virus? 2) If so, doesn't the "Thumbs.db" file registering as "Virtumonde.dll" in the Heuristic section of the Spybot - Search & Destroy scan mean that my PC is infected with the "Virtumonde" virus?
Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org, click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

c:\Thumbs.db

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

If virscan.org is too busy you can try these.

I deleted the file literally minutes before you replied. In light of your prior instructions, replies, and your repeated dismissals regarding that file, I wasn't sure how soon you were going to reply on that aspect and got a sense that you were going to reiterate that I delete the file. The download speed of my computer is currently approximately 59 kbps which is lower than dial-up (which is normally approximately 75 kbps). The computer is DSL and is supposed to have a download speed of 1.5 mbps. I have run updated scans with both MBAM and Spybot - Search & Destroy and both programs have shown no threats. Nevertheless, there is obviously something significantly wrong with my computer. My DSL provider has remotely checked the connection speed going to to the DSL modem of my computer and shows the speed at above 1.5 mbps so the problem is whatever is occurring in my computer. The issue is basically internet-based as files in my hard drive do not appear to be affected. Am I at the point in which I need to pay a computer repair service to come to my home to figure out the problem? Of course I was hoping to resolve this issue via whatthetech.com. Is there anything else I can do via whatthetech.com to resolve this issue? If not, are there computer repair services that you recommend?
By providing the above link (http://myspeed.visualware.com), are you saying that the various speed testing links that I have already used (such as http://www.speedtest.net, http://www2.verizon.net/micro/speedtest/hsi, etc.) are not accurate?

If so. do you want me to test with the above link that you provided and post the result?

The above link has various trial programs and tabs. Could you post the exact link of the speed test that you want me to use from within that link?

I should state that even if there is a small variance between the result of the speed test using the above link that you provided versus the other speed test links that I have already used, the bottom line is that it is evident that my computer's download speed is drastically slow and drastically below the minimum speed that I pay for which is 1.5 mbps.

This issue seems to be caused by malware, spyware, viruses, etc. but scans executed with various protection programs show no threats so this is, naturally, a perplexing issue.

Just want to clarify with you what you want me to do in regard to the above speed test link that you provided
(http://myspeed.visualware.com).
