Unfortunately I opened a suspicious file with notepad, this file was sent from a friend. Since then my Antivirus (Norton 360) was disabled and I could not run live update because IE was unaccesable due to unknown malfunction. Popups keep instructing me to install a malware removal tools that appears to be from Microsoft Windows During that time following virus warnings appeared to come from Norton. Trojan.Win.agent.dcc Win32.G[pcode.AK Win32NetSky.q IAAMonitorNotify.App Finally able to run Norton Scan however it didn't find any problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi jimmadcow, welcome to the forum.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
  • Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply.

Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.

Please post back with
  • GMER log
  • both OTL logs
Thanks

Hi Jimmadcow,

Sorry about the extra work.

Please read through the instructions to familarize youself with what to expect when the tool runs.

It is vitally important that combofix is renamed before it is even started to download

Please download ComboFix from
Link 1
Link 2
to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    -Tools->Options->Main tab
-Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, before you save it to your desktop, rename Combofix to jgh.exe

  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix

———————————————————–

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    ———————————————————–

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe (jgh.exe in your case) & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please post back with

How is the computer?

Thanks
Oldman960; Things seem to be back to normal, however I have only run firefox (without safe mode) so far. Your skills are admirable, it must have taken a long time to acquire your level of expertise. Do you think it would be wise to change my passwords or should I reinstall windows all together? I am still not certain how or what caused this in the first place, the file I thought caused the problem "charlie_boy.fpg" was scanned on my work computer and it did not detect anything. Here is my CF log and thank you again for all of your time and assistance. Oldman960; I'm not exactly sure what you mean by dual boot system. Recently I changed the bios settings in order to boot from the CD ROM this allowed me to run Norton from CD drive(D:\) and scan my system. I did this before trying WTT and didn't have any luck removing my problem. After running CF tonight I noticed a shortcut X12-30196-DLM on one of my desktops, then found out my other user downloaded a program from digital river, it was some type of free trial to write a resume. I cannot remove this using windows uninstall, could this be part of my problem?
Hi Jimmadcow,

I noticed a shortcut X12-30196-DLM on one of my desktops

That would appear to be a trial of MS Office.

By dual boot I meant 2 different drives with windows installed. The combofix log shows windows installed in C:\ drive and the GMER log show D:\ drive as the windows location. Both show the same type of infection but different variants.

Do you think it would be wise to change my passwords

I meant to address this before. Yes you should cahnge all of your passwords just to be cautious.

Please run GMER again and post the log as at the moment I'm trying to determine why we are seeing the differences in the logs.

Thanks
Oldman960

That scan took around 3 hours but here is the file. Sorry for the delay I couldn't stay awake anymore.

Hi Jimmadcow,

They can take awhile. That GMER looks better. Nothing to be concerned about.

You have some very old vulnerable java installed.

  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Scroll down to "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 17
  • Click the download button on the right.
If Information Bar pop-ups up, right-click on it and say it's OK to display the blocked content.
  • Select the platform (Windows, in your case), mutli language.
  • Accept the license agreement, click continue.
You do not have to install the Java Web Start ActiveX Control
  • Scroll down and click on Windows Offline Installation,
  • Save the file jre-6u17-windows-i586-p.exe to your desktop;
Do not select Run . Do not install it yet.

When the download is complete, close your browser.

Open Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

Do not uninstall Java TM 6 Update 17 if found! :yeah:

Reboot your computer.

Next
  • Double-click on the saved file ( jre-6u17-windows-i586-p.exe) to install the update.
  • Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

Next, Double click on OTL.exe
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
  • Do Not copy the word CODE
  • please note the fix starts with the :
:reg
[-HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\H8SRTd.sys]

:Commands
[emptytemp]

Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered
  • Please save the resulting log to be posted in your next reply.

Next

You have this program installed, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM). Please update it and run a scan.

Open MBAM

  • Click the Update tab
  • Click Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • The program will close to update and reopen.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Please post back with
