About three years ago I began training at WTT (then Tom Coyote) but serious business problems meant I had to stop as I did not have time to focus on training (much to my regret). I also trained around the same time at MRU. I learned a lot during training and thought that at least I knew enough to keep myself secure. Apparently not.

(I have posted this problem in MRU as well. I know that is not protocol but given the time of year, the backlog and the apparent widespread nature of my problem I decided to post to both. As soon as any response is received on one site I will post in the other to let them know.)

I have the search engine redirect problem which, judging by posts on the various malware sites, has become widespread. It started a few of days ago when the browser window went blank, Avira threw up a virus warning, and the pc had to be restarted. On restart System Commander warned me that a 'value changed since last boot'. I clicked 'ignore' (so the warning repeats on each reboot), which allowed me to start the pc. I can post the SC warning info if required.

I can start the browser and reach Google and enter a search query. The results page populates but mostly (although not always) when a link is clicked it is redirected to an advertising site, sometimes to 'free-spyware-scanner.biz with the tab saying 'windows security' - which is (presumably) a rogue virus scanning site that wants me to agree to a scan and won't let me close the box (I have to close the browser).

While the redirection (which takes a little time) is happening, the bottom of the browser shows waiting for…something with 'hochu-spat.com/index.php?do=' or two or three alternatives, followed by the clicked link site address for a bit, before that is replaced with the name of the site to which I am redirected.

I don't know where this came from. The most recent downloads have been iTouch (logitech keyboard key mapper), PC Suite (Sony pc-phone synch software which I did have on the pc but which stopped working so I uninstalled it and downloaded it again), and the latest XP update.

I previously had Spy-bot SD with Teatimer and IE Resident but removed that yesterday in case the immunise data was interfering with anything; and Windows Defender, which I also removed yesterday, leaving just the Avira suite.

I have run SUPERAntiSpyware and scanned with Spy-bot before removing it, and used the Panda online scan. They found nothing. Avira scan finds nothing.

I am connected via Virgin cable using a Belkin router.

I have changed my name in the logs to read Surreal.

Whether or not they are connected to my problem, I would appreciate info on what c:\windows\system32\TempInst.exe and c:\windows\DelMR.bat are. They appear in the DDS log suspiciously about the time I think I caught the infection. I cannot find any info on these (Jotti scans come up with nothing).

Thanks for your help.

I have followed the instructions re preparation with the exception of SysRestorePoint.exe which would not run, telling me that I needed to install v2 of .Net Framework. However, DDS text shows a system restore point set today.

I ran MBAM and it hangs after Remove Selected and has to be closed, so it does not open a text log. However, when I restart MBAM the infections found are all listed under the Quarantine tab.

==== End Of File ===========================
Hi,

Sorry for the late reply. I am away myself with limited internet until next week, in the meantime do this. If you do not reply promptly not to worry, I will keep this thread open for you.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Post the report and also a new HJT log please

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Post the Malwarebytes log, the Combofix log please
Hi Ken and many thanks…the Christmas holiday isn't the best time to catch a virus!

I downloaded MBAM again from your link, reinstalled it and ran the scan. As before, it finds five problems (registry) but after clicking Remove Selected the prog stalls while dealing with one of the two FirewallDisableNotify registry data and then goes to 'Not responding'. I close and restart it and the five problems are shown in the quarantine tab, but I do not get any text log.

I'm an idiot because I realise you probably wanted me to run HJT before downloading and running ComboFix. I didn't, so the HJT report is post Combofix. Sorry about that.

Hi Ken PC now starts up without the SC warning of changed interrupts. Testing IE (admittedly brief as the ham and chestnut stuffing require my attention) - so far search links have gone where they should go, and are not being redirected. Was/is there a sign of a rootkit? I use the pc for financial stuff. Also I'd still appreciate info on what c:\windows\system32\TempInst.exe and c:\windows\DelMR.bat are. BTW, after running ComboFix I now have an IE icon on the desktop which was not there before. It does not have the shortcut symbol on it, but surely I don't have the full IE prog now installed on my desktop? Should this be deleted or not? Cheers.
Starting on the EggNog myself, :woot: it showed on your GMER report and Combofix fixed it but your MASTER BOOT RECORD was infected.

Run Malwarebytes in Safemode and post the log, then post a new HJT log.

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode with Networking
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode
Hi Ken

Nothing quite says Christmas like egg nog. Equally, Christmas is the only time I ever drink egg nog. I hope you enjoyed yours and had a good Christmas.

I ran MBAM in safe mode and it found nothing, but this time it did produce a log, copy below. I ran HJT in normal mode, which I presume is what you wanted.

Good Morning,

Christmas was great, back to reality in a few more days .

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

The rest of your logs look fine  Things running ok ?
Hey Ken Didn't expect you to be on! Yes, sadly the return to reality and work is speeding closer. Quick question…is the R0 fix unrelated to the fact that I have my home page set to about:blank? Cheers…
Most likely, the reason we remove it is because the CoolWebSearch infection installs that but if you set it then you can leave it be..

Now to remove most of the tools that we have used in fixing your machine:
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Download OTC to your desktop and run it
  • A list of tool components used in the cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTC to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

  • How did I get infected in the first place ?
Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
  • Tutorial for System Restore <– Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.
  • WhattheTech
  • Grinler BleepingComputer
  • GeeksTo Go
  • Dslreports

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 3 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
Ken
Hi Ken

PC seems to be running well and I have not had any search engine redirect problems so far.

I fixed the R0 just in case and then reset the browser to the blank home page.

I ran OTC and I'm left with the following - should I leave them alone, delete them (or in the case of stuff on my desktop move them to another drive/folder)?:
  • Boot.ini has additional entry for the Windows Recovery Console downloaded by Combofix, and machine boots briefly to WRC/XP option after the SC option
  • Erunt on desktop
  • SysRestore on desktop
  • ATF cleaner on desktop
  • GMER installation exe on desktop
  • New IE launch icon on desktop which does not have the shortcut symbol - does this mean another installation of IE8 on my desktop (surely not), but if I delete
this icon will it delete IE8 as the icon is not a shortcut link?
Can you tell me anything about the following, which show up in the first DDS log as being created around the time the redirect problem started, and I can't find info about them:
  • c:\windows\system32\TempInst.exe
  • c:\windows\DelMR.bat
Finally, I'm so careful when surfing and thought myself to be so well protected that I'm pretty stunned to have been infected. Is there any way (that does not require a degree in computer forensic science) to find out how the infection got in?

Sorry to be a pain with the ancillary questions.

Cheers…
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Whatever else is does not remove you can drag to the trash.

c:\windows\DelMR.bat <– You can just delete this one
c:\windows\system32\TempInst.exe I believe this is ok but lets upload and check to be sure

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

Go to VirusTotal and submit this file for analysis, just use the browse feature and then Send File, you will get a report back, post the report into this thread for me to see.

c:\windows\system32\TempInst.exe
