Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

    *comctl32*
    *msvcrt*
    *user32*
    *explorer*
    *sfcfiles*
    *ctfmon*
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.

Hi, Do you have access to your installation disk as you have some infected files on the system that need to be replaced as they are system files so we cannot just delete them. There are no suitable replacements on your machine, so we need a disk of the same operating system and service pack to copy them from.
The problem is that I am in the Caribbean where I do not get any proper service at all…this machine was actually a vista opsys…andwhen I lost a hard drive, someone locally installed XP….well its continues to be a challenge. My vista recovery disks were in Canada at the time and I had to be up and working in 4 hrs. XP..i will have to seek locally. R
Hi,

Hopefully you will be able to borrow a disk, but it must be the same version and service pack as what you have.

These are all the files that need to be replaced from the disk:

c:\windows\system32\midimap.dll
c:\windows\system32\comctl32.dll
c:\windows\system32\msvcrt.dll
c:\windows\system32\user32.dll
c:\windows\system32\sfcfiles.dll
c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe
c:\windows\system32\ctfmon.exe
c:\windows\explorer.exe

This is how to do that:

Insert your XP Installation disk

then you will need to do the following for all the files ending in .dll:

Go to Start > Run.In the Run box, type in cmd and hit enter.

This opens the command prompt window.

Now type in the following red text exactly as seen. (if your cd drive is not D - change it to the appropriate letter)

expand D:\i386\midimap.dl_ -r c:\windows\system32

There are spaces in there, so I have pointed out below where they are.

ExpandSPACED:\i386\midimap.dl_SPACE-rSPACEc:\windows\system32

If done correctly, it will say "one file(s) expanded successfully".

Repeat for these following files:

D:\i386\comctl32.dl_ -r c:\windows\system32
D:\i386\msvcrt.dl_ -r c:\windows\system32
D:\i386\user32.dl_ -r c:\windows\system32
D:\i386\sfcfiles.dl_ -r c:\windows\system32

For the files ending in .exe, please do the following:

Go to Start > Run.In the Run box, type in cmd and hit enter.

This opens the command prompt window.

Now type in the following red text exactly as seen. (if your cd drive is not D - change it to the appropriate letter)

expand D:\i386\winlogon.ex_ c:\windows\system32

There are two spaces in there, so I have pointed out below where they are.

ExpandSPACED:\i386\winlogon.ex_SPACEc:\windows\system32

If done correctly, it will say "one file(s) expanded successfully".

Do the same for this file:
D:\i386\ctfmon.ex_ c:\windows\system32

You will need to do the same for the c:\windows\explorer.exe file, however note the path is slightly different - the file belongs in the c:\windows folder, so the command would be:

expand D:\i386\explorer.ex_ c:\windows

Let me know how it goes.
