This is my first posting here and I'd be very grateful if anyone could assist. If I am posting in the wrong place please also let me know.

For the last month or so, this page - http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windows/intern…er/default.aspx - inviting me to try IE8 - is the first page to appear every time I connect to the internet via Start / Internet. My home page is set for http://news.bbc.co.uk/ and that is the only page I have listed in Tools / Internet Options / General / Home Page. I can get onto the internet via shortcuts or links from emails without seeing this page, and then to my homepage via the house icon, so its only the Start / Internet route that gets it.

I can't figure out how to get rid of it. I have downloaded Hijackthis and would be grateful if anyone would be willing to have a look at my Hijackthis logfile to help me determine where the problem lies. Or if there is another way to solve it then I am open to suggestions but am really stuck here! :pullhair:

Hi,

This isn't a malware issue, but part of Microsoft's advertising campaign. I suggest contacting them directly if the optout feature did not work.

There are a couple of things in your HJT log that we can take care of as well.

Please do the following:

  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below (if still present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {0F9B4CA4-A30F-480A-841D-69B45C50A8F8} (SekureL0gin.SekureKontrol) - http://secure2.comned.com/signuptemplates/AktiveSekurity.cab
O16 - DPF: {FF0C042C-98E9-4C36-B2EC-E21FDFDCEF75} (InstallCtl Class) - http://download.redswoosh.net/Installer/104/rsinstaller.cab

  • Close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
  • Click Yes when prompted
  • Close HijackThis.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
Have contacted Microsoft and hope they can sort out the problem. Thanks for that. I'm running Norton 360 and can't see where to disable scriptblocking protection. I've done as you say up to that point.
