Hi, My computer is regularly hitting the hard drive and maxing on CPU and memory even when I have nothing running. Also, it freezes the whole PC if I try and run root repeal. The steps I have taken are as follows: 1) I have disabled as much of AGV free v9.0.716 as it will allow me to do without uninstalling it. Resident shield is off and Link scanner are off. 2) I have dowloaded and run Spybot search and destroy. Found 2 problems and fixed them. 3) I have run the dds.scr – DDS.txt copied below, and Attach.txt is attached 4) As mentioned above I have tried multiple times including after cold reboots to run root repeal, with all attempts failing I could really use your help. Thanks much, kjstroubledpc DDS (Ver_09-06-26.01) - NTFSx86 Run by [removed] at 11:17:37.36 on Fri 12/11/2009 Internet Explorer: 7.0.5730.11 Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.1023.493 [GMT -8:00] AV: AVG Anti-Virus Free *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated) {17DDD097-36FF-435F-9E1B-52D74245D6BF} AV: Kaspersky Anti-Virus *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated) {2C4D4BC6-0793-4956-A9F9-E252435469C0} ============== Running Processes =============== C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunch svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k WudfServiceGroup C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\avgchsvx.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EvtEng.exe C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\avgrsx.exe C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\avgcsrvx.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\S24EvMon.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\WLKeeper.exe svchost.exe svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 4.0\PhotoshopElementsFileAgent.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\avgwdsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTsvcCDA.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$MICROSOFTBCM\Binn\sqlservr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\HPZipm12.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\RegSrvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k imgsvc C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\avgnsx.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Pure Networks Shared\Platform\nmsrvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\DSentry.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe C:\WINDOWS\BCMSMMSG.exe C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe C:\Program Files\Apoint\Apoint.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 4.0\apdproxy.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\bin\ZCfgSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\ifrmewrk.exe C:\Program Files\Apoint\Apntex.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Pure Networks Shared\Platform\nmctxth.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG9\avgtray.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\Creative\Sync Manager Unicode\CTSyncU.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\FinePixViewer\QuickDCF2.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\Dot1XCfg.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wscntfy.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Kurt\Desktop\dds.scr ============== Pseudo HJT Report =============== uInternet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = iexplore uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local BHO: {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} -   • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
Hi,

There are no obvious signs of Malware on your system, but we should do a couple of scans to be certain.

Please do the following:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <– very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Run an on-line scan with Kaspersky

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky On-line Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.
The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

In your next reply please include
  • MBAM Log
  • Kaspersky report
Hi CatByte,

Well, it all came out negative. Attached are the two files you requested.

I wonder, in the first DDS report I provided you on this post, at the very top was something interesting:
AV: AVG Anti-Virus Free *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated) {17DDD097-36FF-435F-9E1B-52D74245D6BF}
AV: Kaspersky Anti-Virus *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated) {2C4D4BC6-0793-4956-A9F9-E252435469C0}

And when i was installing AGV v9, it said i should get rid of Kaspersky. I had uninstalled it over a year ago. Could there be something residual Kaspersky content residing in the registry causing this problem?

Thanks,

kjstroubledpc
Download Sec-Info.zip from here and save it to your Desktop. You will need to extract the file.

Right click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All…
In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish

You should now see a folder with a .vbs file in it. Double click Sec-info.vbs to run it and a text file called Sec-Info.txt should be created in the same folder - either that or you'll get an error message.
Please copy and paste the contents of the text file into your next reply and then you can delete both of the folders and their contents.
CatByte, OK. Interesting. Despite what is said below, i don't have Kaspersky in my "Add/Remove Programs" area, nor do I have a folder for it under program files. Here is the output from Sec-Info: ——————————————————————- Company Name: AVG Technologies AV Name: AVG Anti-Virus Free Version Number: 9.0 On-Access Scanning Enabled: No Product up-to-date: Yes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Company Name: Kaspersky Lab AV Name: Kaspersky Anti-Virus Version Number: 8.0.0.521 On-Access Scanning Enabled: No Product up-to-date: Yes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please do the following:

In order to fully uninstall the product:

  • Download kavremover10.zip
  • Unpack the file kavremover10.exe from the archive
  • Run the file kavremover10.exe
  • Enter the code from the picture
  • Click the Remove button
  • Wait until a dialog window informs you of successful product removal
  • Click OK
  • Reboot your computer
CatByte, When I run the Kaspersky Anti-Virus remover, I immediately get a popup box that says "Kaspersky Anti-Virus was not detected" Thoughts? And just to double check I ran Sec-Info again with same result: Company Name: AVG Technologies AV Name: AVG Anti-Virus Free Version Number: 9.0 On-Access Scanning Enabled: No Product up-to-date: Yes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Company Name: Kaspersky Lab AV Name: Kaspersky Anti-Virus Version Number: 8.0.0.521 On-Access Scanning Enabled: No Product up-to-date: Yes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks, kjstroubledpc
Hi,

Please do the following:

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
Note:These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.
CatByte,

Here you go. First is the OTL.txt:

Hi,

Please try the Revo uninstaller first, if no luck I'll try removing the files with OTL, but I'd prefer it if the Revo uninstaller works:

Download and install the Revo Uninstaller
  • Double click the new Revo Uninstaller icon on your desktop to start the program
  • Scroll through the listed programs and Right Click on the program you wish to uninstall (Kaspersky)
  • From the pop out menu choose Uninstall
  • Click Yes to the confirmation dialogue
  • In the next window select the Advanced mode
  • Click Next to start uninstalling the program
  • Answer Yes to confirm the uninstall
  • When the program has completed the four steps, click Next to allow the program to search for leftovers
  • Once complete, click Next, then Finish
CatByte, Revo did not detect Kapersky, so I could not uninstall it. Can you provide me some guidance on using OTL to get rid of the files. I want to ensure I don't make it worse by doing something wrong. Thanks much, kjstroubledpc
There really isn't much in the OTL log, so I'm thinking the uninstaller did remove it.

There are a couple of other things to remove with OTL, so please do the following:

Run OTL.exe
  • Copy/paste the following text written inside of the code box into the Custom Scans/Fixes box located at the bottom of OTL (do not copy the word 'code' start with the colon in front of OTL)

    :OTL
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - No CLSID value found.
    O3 - HKCU\..\Toolbar\ShellBrowser: (no name) - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - No CLSID value found.
    O3 - HKCU\..\Toolbar\WebBrowser: (no name) - {0B53EAC3-8D69-4B9E-9B19-A37C9A5676A7} - No CLSID value found.
O16 - DPF: {E06E2E99-0AA1-11D4-ABA6-0060082AA75C} (Reg Error: Value error.)
SRV - (AVP) – File not found

    :Reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\DomainProfile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
    "C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009\avp.exe" =-

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done
  • Then post the OTL log
