Must have downloaded some malware Dec. 8, as PC was slowing/freezing, and needed to be unpowered and rebooted several times. Updated free versions of Malwarebytes and AVG. Ran Malwarebytes Quick scan and found two rootkits. Ran AVG complete PC scan with no infection found. Updated my Firefox browser. Ran Malwarebytes complete PC scan overnight (was still running after 90 minutes). Next day, awoke to see blue screen with text saying the PC did a memory dump. There was no log for that scan. Rebooted. PC is slow, takes longer to freeze. Did a system restore to a date a few days ago (which might have made Firefox browser unstable - I reinstalled it). Still slow and funky, eventually stalls online. Posting below partial Malwarebytes log from first Quick scan. Followed by today's RootRepeal and DDS. Attaching the Attach text file. Thanks in advance for any help! Files Infected: C:\Documents and Settings\Dave\Local Settings\Temp\kRYT.dll (Rootkit.MBR) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. just wondering if there are other recommended sites for (preferably free) help with malware problems? I'm not dissing the whatthetech volunteers - they've helped me before, but the Infection Removal guys seem pretty busy. Just wondering what my other options are.
Hi,

Please do the following:

[external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
Hi, bad news. I tried running GMER twice, for a couple hours each time, but had problems and had to unplug the machine. I unticked the specific boxes. I only have the C: drive and left that ticked. First run, I got a Windows error that there was "insufficient room to copy, etc, and possible error with Network or hardware." Second time, when it showed that it started scanning "C/Windows" it seemed to freeze. Both times, I noticed it said inside the GMER window something about "sector 00 Rootkit like behavior." I suppose it might say that all the time?
Hi,

Please disable AVG and try running GMER in safemode.

Please open the AVG 8 Control Center, by right clicking on the AVG 8 icon on the task bar.
  • Click on Tools.
  • Select Advanced Settings.
  • In the left hand pane, scroll down to "Resident Shield".
  • In the main pane, deselect the option to "Enable Resident Shield."
  • To re-enable AVG 8, please select "Enable Resident Shield" again.
AVG Resident Shield was already disabled for both scans. I forgot to mention in original post I also have Spywareguard. That was running during the first scan, but disabled for 2nd scan. If I should run GMER again, do you mean I should boot up Windows XP in safe mode?
Yes Please:

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY repeatedly,
  • this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
  • go into your usual account
Hi,

Please do the following:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <– very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Run an on-line scan with Kaspersky

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky On-line Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.
The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

In your next reply please include
  • MBAM Log
  • Kaspersky report
Running Kaspersky now - I deactivated as much of AVG as I could but it's antivirus programs are on. Does this matter? Also my Windows Firewall is on, and Internet Explorer probably has popups blocked (I don't usually use Explorer but it was quicker than Firefox). Let me know if those matter to Kaspersky. My original post has a partial Malwarebytes report of rootkits. This new quickscan didn't find anything (see below). I'll post the Kaspersky report when it's done. As long as kaspersky is running, it should be fine. If it is going to interfere it would stop it from running. It can take several hours to run it's course, so please allow it to finish.
I assume I have to stay online for this to run? It's been running for 90 minutes but says only 2% done. This can't be accurate, can it? It would take days.
Scan took around 6 hours. Would the infections cause this, or some other reason (number of programs, size of memory)?
