Thank you in advance for any help you can offer me. In April of 2009 my computer was running very slow and I could not log onto web based email servers. I took the tower to a local computer repair shop. After 3 months and $250 I got the system back, marginally better. They claimed to have removed the hard drive and perform a deep cleaning to remove all viruses. They also loaded a dozen spyware/malware/registry cleaner programs; the logic being, "the more you have the better your protection."(Contrary to what I have recently read on this web site.) In doing this the computer no longer boots right up. I now have to log in as a user and then it boots up. Also when I use add/ remove programs on the control panel; I often get a message that I'm either running in Safe-mode or Windows Installer is not installed. But I could check my e-mail and for that I was thankful. Over the last few weeks when I log onto the internet and switch from one web site to another I am redirected to something else; often sports betting, poker or a dating site. What I've tried. I have Max spyware detector and Max registry cleaner (both registered copies) that I have live updated every day and ran (turning the unit off in between each run as recommended by the computer shop) 5-6 times each day. They have found few errors. I have run disk clean and Defrag 100's of times. I've also started an aggressive campaign against any program I don't need and/or know what it does. The few that had uninstall programs I used to get rid of them the others I just deleted the folders. Now I found you and followed the instructions on the welcome new members topic. Downloaded and ran ERUNT. Went fine. Downloaded and tried to run DDS. Downloaded it from each of the 3 links twice. I deleted the previous download before I downloaded the next version. All six attempts ended the same, " An unknown error occured. The program will be terminated." I followed the instructions that Quietman 7 had for disabling my security programs. I had some issues here. Step 5 for Windows Defender he says to go to Control Panel > Security > Windows Defender. On my computer I don't have Security, I have Security Center (which I assume is the same) but no Windows Defender anything there. I am also running Max Spyware Detector & Max Registry Cleaner. There were no specific instructions for disabling either of those, so I just closed them from the tray. Finally I ran RootRepeal. That went fine and below is the Text: ROOTREPEAL © AD, 2007-2009 ================================================== Scan Start Time: 2009/12/04 13:13 Program Version: Version 1.3.5.0 Windows Version: Windows XP SP3 ================================================== Drivers ——————- Name: rootrepeal.sys Image Path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\rootrepeal.sys Address: 0xB69A5000 Size: 49152 File Visible: No Signed: - Status: - ==EOF== Any help will be greatly apprieciated.
Hello and Welcome to the Forum.

I'm not sure if you're having software/hardware/malware issues or all of the above.

Lets see if you can use HijackThis.

Please delete any HijackThis Folders and Files you might have now.

Download HijackThis.

Click the "Save" button.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here [Add Reply].

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] Button below to post the new HJT log and report.txt
That Seemed to run fine. With the exception that the first time I did it and added a post, I was redirected to a newer version (v2.0.2). I downloaded that one and followed your instructions. Below is the log. Thank you again for your help.

I don't see an anti-Virus program running.
I do see where Symantec was used at one time though.

If it were my computer the first thing I'd do is uninstall IE8 and go back to IE7.

Uninstall Internet Explorer 8 to return to Internet Explorer 7 on Windows XP

Click "Start," and then click "Control Panel."
Click "Add or Remove Programs."
Check "Show Updates" at the top of the dialog box.
Scroll down the list and highlight the version of Internet Explorer 8 that you are running, and then click "Change/Remove."

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Note: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I'm surprised that it shows no Anti Virus. In my try it shows I'm running Max Spyware Detector & Max Registry Cleaner. To the best of my knowledge I never had Symantic on this computer. Had MacAfee when my wife used it for work, Norton and Windows Defender came with the computer, Avast, Ad-Aware, StopZilla, Spyware Doctor and Spyware Guard were added by the computer repair center. The Max's I purchased and loaded.

I uninstalled IE 8. In the process, my spyware detector said, “spunisnst.exe is trying to change your file association. Will you allow this action?” I said No.

No problem un-hiding the requested files.

No problem with AFT.

ComboFix downloaded fine to my desktop. I turned off Defender and the Max’s. It ran, but did not create ComboFix.txt. I ran a search but could not find the file. Found:

Name In Folder

ComboFix.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Jeannine\Desktop
ComboFixDownload.cfxxe C:\32788R22FWJFW
ndis_combofix.dat C:\32788R22FWJFW
COMBOFIX.EXE-1691a09b.pf C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch

If I open ndis_combofix.dat with notepad, it reads:

FINDSTR.EXE -MI "update_load" %systemdrive%\cp*.nls >ndis00 2>nul

FOR /F "TOKENS=*" %%G IN ( ndis00 ) DO @(

DEL ndis00 2>nul

Advanced technology to detect & delete special spyware
High scanning speed with detailed threat analysis
Appealing and User friendly interface
Enhanced active protection to protect your online privacy
Registry fix feature to restore your original settings

That's not anti-Virus.
Symantec / Nortons is one in the same.

I don't see these anywhere:
Avast, Ad-Aware, StopZilla, Spyware Doctor and Spyware Guard

Only run one anti-Virus and Firewall at a time.

Use an AntiVirus Software - Choose only one - More than one will conflict. It is very important that your computer has anti-virus software running to protect against viruses. Update Antivirus prior to manual scans as necessary or as used. Please only choose one, having more than one can cause problems, such as crashes and your computer to slow down.

Run a full scan and let us know what it finds along with a new HijackThis log.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment
Believing that Max Secure was anti-virus and anti-spyware, I had uninstalled all the others to have just one anti-virus and one firewall. I choose to download Avast and ran a full scan. Below is the list of virus it found. I choose to send them to the chest instead of deleting. I haven’t used the computer except to do what you have asked. Those tasks, for the most part seem to be running at a good speed. However, I am still getting Hijacked and redirected to new web pages.

Download the tools needed to a flash drive or other removable media, and transfer them to the infected computer if needed.

Next:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

——————————————————————–

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have the Windows Recovery Console pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Scroll down to Step 1, and select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System. Download the file & save it as it's originally named.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.

———————————————————————

Transfer all files you just downloaded, to the desktop of the infected computer.

——————————————————————–

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

    [external image: Posted Image]

  • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply using Copy/Paste.

Notes:

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Also please describe how your computer behaves in your next reply.
Quick clarification on the instructions: 1. Should I uninstall and/or delete the previously downloaded versions of AFT Cleaner and ComboFix before downloading them again? 2. Following the link to get Windows Recovery Console, step one: only give me the option for Original, SP1 and SP2. I have XP Home SP3. Should I use SP2? 3. Since I should only use one virus protection software and I just added Avast, should I uninstall Defender or Max Secure (even though its not virus protection)? Sorry to be such a pain.
Quick clarification on the instructions:

1. Should I uninstall and/or delete the previously downloaded versions of AFT Cleaner and ComboFix before downloading them again? You can leave ATF as is, run the Combofix you have but get any update.

2. Following the link to get Windows Recovery Console, step one: only give me the option for Original, SP1 and SP2. I have XP Home SP3. Should I use SP2? Yes, use SP3

3. Since I should only use one virus protection software and I just added Avast, should I uninstall Defender or Max Secure (even though its not virus protection)? You can leave those.

Sorry to be such a pain.
When I dragged recovery console onto ComboFix it said, "Warning trying to run ComboFix.exe." I selected run. It opened a small window that said ComboFix and had a run time meter under made up of about 16 green squares. It took about 10 seconds to run, never saw the What's Next box, never saw End-user License agreement, No propts to run anything and no txt files anywhere on the C:\ drive; just filled the green bar and ended. Am I doing something wrong?
Same results. Even tried deleting and downloading again. No luck. I noticed in the instructions that it is important to download ComboFix to the desktop. Which I did, however, since I got my computer back I never really go to the desktop. When I first boot I have to choose a username (from a list of 1 choice: Jeannine) and a password. So my Combofix is located at C:\Documents and Settings\Jeannine\Desktop. Should I try moving it to just the C:\ drive?
We have something else going on. Combofix should run from where it's at.

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any
"<— ROOKIT" entries unless advised!

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click NO
  • In the right panel, you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked … leave everything checked and ensure the Show all box is un-checked.
  • Now click the Scan button.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
Post the contents of GMER.txt in your next reply.
