Hi, Are you still with me ? Whats going on is you have a hijacked hard disc controller, the files I had you check for need to be replaced by clean ones. If you found my fix a little confusing let me know and we can take it step by step
Hi, Yep, I'm still with you. I ran the fix.bat which worked fine and I saw the copied files on C drive. However, when I boot the recovery console I get the "blue screen of death". I cant remember what error was to have caused this now. Do I need to reinstall the recovery console? Cheers
When you boot to the RC, I need to know exactly what error your getting, try it again and if it blue screens write it down word for word. Do you have your Windows XP CD or the Windows Install disk ?
Here is what the blue screen says when I try to boot the Recovery Cosole: A problem has been detected and Windowa has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen restart your computer. If thus screen appears again, follow these steps: Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configures and terminated. Run CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. Technical information: *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7A5624, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
This may fix it but its important to drag your copy of Combofix to the trash before you begin.

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All… and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: to restore your registry, go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Download ComboFix This file will be called Kittyfix

Link 1

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Happy New Year :)

Looks like Combofix fixed it. Your logs look fine

A few things to go over, File Sharing is most likely how you got infected. Your downloading files from and unknown source and most contain maliscious programs bundled with that file. Its the latest way that these dirtbags have found to infect computers. You would be doing yourself a big favor by uninstalling these

Dropbox
limewire

This program brings adds and is also not recommended
ASk.com

How are things running now ?
Happy New Year! The computer is running fast again! Thanks for all your help! I removed limewire over a year ago. I don't know why it showed up in the log. I don't know of a better way than Dropbox for sharing large files with my colleagues during the holidays. I suppose I could compress the files then email them.
I guess dropbox will be ok, I was just concerned about you downloading and sharing music files, thats where you can get into trouble.

Now to remove most of the tools that we have used in fixing your machine:
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Download OTC to your desktop and run it
  • A list of tool components used in the cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTC to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

  • How did I get infected in the first place ?
Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
  • Tutorial for System Restore <– Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.
  • WhattheTech
  • Grinler BleepingComputer
  • GeeksTo Go
  • Dslreports

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 3 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
