I'm having trouble with what appears to be cws returning my home page to its own page all the time. May I post my Hijack log for someone to have a look at? Best Ed
Please do post a log. Please insure that you download HijackThis to its own folder C:\HJT for example. Make sure that the complete log with the header information is included.
Thanks a lot! I used spybot which removed a few things, then cws shredder - each time it removes 'searchx' but it comes back. Here's the log:

Step # 1

Download and install APM from: http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=apm Save it to a location you can find easliy as you will need it soon.

Please scan with HiJackThis again then put a check beside all of the items listed below and choose FIX. Please insure that all windows are closed with the exception of HijackThis.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C7AD96C9-9654-4795-926F-0EB784E9EB0F} - C:\Windows\System32\jofaha.dll

Open the APM tool you downloaded.

In the upper window select explorer.exe

In the lower window find and rightclick the BHO from the HijackThis log

C:\Windows\System32\jofaha.dll

Select Unload DLL and click OK on the prompts that follow.

Now run Adaware and Spybot Search & Destroy following the instructions
below
.

http://www.tomcoyote.org/scanning.php

Then REBOOT and post a new HiJackThis log.
OK Siggy - I followed your instructions and (cautiously) I believe it worked (!!!). I've reset my home page, rebooted twice and it's still there where it should be. The only unexpected bit was that when using APM the BHO jofaha.dll was not there at all. Here's the log - is there more I need to do?

You're a total star!

Did you set up your computer for remote access?
This application allows your PC to be controlled by another PC on the internet. It is a valid application just wondering is you installed it our use it?

If not put a check beside this line

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinVNC] "C:\Program Files\RealVNC\WinVNC\WinVNC.exe" -servicehelper

Then reboot to safe mode(tap f8 while bios loads) then delete this

C:\Program Files\RealVNC <<
These are are optional as they are resource hogs at start up

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE
O4 - Global Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE

Reboot and post a new log just to make we did get it all.
Hello Siggy - here's the log (I left the remote access alone because I need it sometimes for networking): fantastic work - my undying thanks to you! :D

Log is looking good.

I would like you to go over to Panda online virus scan please. Let it fix what it finds, if anything, then reboot and post a (hopefully ;) ) final log.

I am sking you to go to Panda as it has had some success cleaning out and leftover hidden files from the hijack that you experienced.

Panda http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co…n_principal.htm
Ah… - got a problem there; Internet Explorer is now having deep trouble getting anywhere at all - type in an address and it crawls a while then times out. (That's a full address - http:// etc.) But the home page is still there OK. It doesn't look as if I can even get online with the infected computer. Have you got a suggestion? I ran another hjt scan, and it shows the same as after the last treatment; but each time I run cws shredder, reboot and run it again, it tells me that it has removed 'searchx'. I'm real mystified now. Best Ed
Postscript: Have run cws shredder and it is showing all clean - so it's just the slowed-up browser I'm struggling with now. Thanks Siggy! Ed

Sorry for taking awhile to get back to you was asking the experts for ideas. What are the speeds like for other purposes? Is it only IE that is slow? Also you should reinstall Spybot as it has a broken line and will not work properly. O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll (file missing) Also check your intenet settings to insure that they are all ok. Tools>InternetOptions>Connections. Please let me know.
