Looking for a little help please.
Windows XP Laptop
will not allow upgrade to service pack 3
Internet explorer would not work
I have downloaded and ran Malwarebytes Anti-malware.
Also Hijack this.
Below is my logfile from Hijack this.
I managed to get internet explorer running after I ran Malware. It did find 8 items that were removed.
AVG continues to pop up with a Resident Shield alert with Trojan Horse generic15.adlc
Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Thank You

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

1. launch Notepad (Start>All Programs>Accessories), and copy/paste all the Quoted REGEDIT below to it. Don't forget to include REGEDIT4.
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: All files
Click: Save

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=""

2. Save this text as fixme.reg. Make sure the "Save as type:" is "All Files (*.*)" and save it to your desktop. Include the word REGEDIT4

3. Double-click on fixme.reg. When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click Yes.

Thanks for getting to my issues.
Computer definitely seems to be more responsive. One thing though is just prior to rebooting after completing the items, I received an AVG Virus warning.
It mentioned a virus in C:\System Volume Information\_restore. I had received 3 warnings yesterday in the same directory. This mentioned a different virus from the previous three though.

Attached is my logfile.

Don't worry about the items in C:\System Volume Information\_restore.
We'll take care of that in our cleanup.

Run a new MBAM scan. Follow these instructions.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    Posted Image
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Posted Image
  • Then click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Please don't attach the scans / logs, use "copy/paste". .

Yes you need to work with them to solved this issue. It removed a required file.
Here is the topic about it.
http://www.malwareby...showtopic=30371

You should just be able to tell them when they reply to your help ticket that MBAM removed atapi.sys.

You can also give them a link to your topic here:

These aren't bad but not needed at startup.

jusched.exe Checks with Sun's Java updates site to see if newer Java versions are available. Visit http://java.sun.com or just run the Java Plug-In Control Panel

InstallShield Update Service related; Automatically searches for and performs any updates to the software

InstallShield Update Service Scheduler; automatically searches for and performs any updates to the software so you’re always working with the most current version

IMEKRMIG.EXE Part of MS Input Method Editor which is used to ease the input of Asian characters in MS Office (Chinese, Japanese and this one is Korean)

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe"

Things are looking good here. Odd thing though after I had ran Hijack This and removed those items and rebooted. Internet Explorer came up like 4 times. After another reboot that did not happen.

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

[*]Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

[*]Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

[*]Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

[*]Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
[/list]Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would suggest you read How to Prevent Malware:
