Actually I had to go several restore points back to get it operational again. It works, but still has the original problem. I really do not think it is a malware issue. At this point, I only investigate it because it is a good learning exercise. It would have been easier to just reformat and re-install. :-(

It took several restore points back, not just the one made by the tool. It's behaving like it did before I started this process. This is an interesting learning experience. My plan is to remove the HD and scan it as a secondary drive in a different computer. That can sometimes find things that are hidden by clever malware.

Your issue may be related to a corrupt service pack installation.
