the spybot file is in program files, but is empty..says its in use elsewhere. hijack this is on control panel-uninstall programs- says i don't have access. i want spybot back on my computer but can't load new one because it says read file already exists-try again.

Copy the file inherit.exe on your desktop to C:\Program Files Drag the Spybot folder on top of inherit.exe then drop it. Click Allow if prompted. Wait about 10 seconds for a Finished message then see if you can open the Spybot folder (don't delete it, please). Repeat with the Trend folder. Is Spybot shown in the Programs list? Locate HijackThis on the Start>All Programs menu (maybe listed as Trend) and see if Uninstall is available, and works.

Lets try another angle.
Download the installation files for HijackThis and Spybot, then see if you can install them.
Let me know of any error messages.

Oh, and let us know if downloading (saving) files is normal again.

Save Inherit.exe to the desktop, then copy it to the Program Files folder.
Drag the Spybot folder onto Inherit.exe and drop it.
When you get the Finished message, try installing again.
Drag-n-drop the Trend Micro folder onto Inherit.exe as well.
When finished, see if the new HijackThis desktop shortcut works properly.

Does it by chance tell you what file is marked read only? Is the new HijackThis icon on the desktop a shortcut? Right click and select Properties to see what info it has and relay that back please.

Great! Any other problems still exist? Have you tried using/testing FireFox yet? Please do a scan with HijackThis and save the log, then post it here.
