Hi all, let me first introduce myself. My name is Andrew.

Here is my current situation: Today while on my computer, I started receiving messages I've never received before. I kept receiving popups on my desktop saying that threats had been detected and then proceeded to perform a fake system scan. The "dialog box" said something like 'PC AntiSpyware 2010'. I also had the little red circle with the white X in my system tray. Anytime you'd mouse over it, a warning balloon would pop up.

After doing a little research around these forums, I decided the best bet would be to download, update and run MalwareBytes' remover tool. I did a scan, checked all the objects that came up (all 44 of them! OUCH!) and had the program delete them. I then restarted my PC and voila! No sign of the malware at all. Awesome.

Except now my internet doesn't work. Both my wireless adapter tray icon (D-Link DWL-G122) and my wireless network icon are shown as being connected and having excellent signal strength. I even did a ping of google.com using the CMD prompt and it showed no errors in either direction! Weird.

So my question is wtf is going on here!? lol

Below is the log of my HJT scan. Any help would be tremendously appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi AndrewBVY,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please either print out these instructions for reference or copy/paste them in notepad and save to your desktop for access when in safe mode

Make all files and folders visible
Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

We must disable certain protection programs that may interfere with our fix:
http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_to_Disab…ams_t89859.html

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sys32_nov] C:\WINDOWS\system32\sys32_nov.exe
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [sys32_nov] C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\sys32_nov.exe
  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

We Now Need To Boot Into Safemode

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine,
amount of memory, hard drives installed etc (BOOT SCREEEN).
At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following files and DELETE them (if still present):
C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\sys32_nov.exe <–This folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sys32_nov.exe <–This folder

Don't be concerned if you don't find these folders. It just means that it was already removed in a previous step.

Restart your computer normally.

Please open Notepad

  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad.exe in the Run Box.
Copy and Paste everything from the Quote box into Notepad:

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /renew
    del fix.bat

  • Save the file to your DESKTOP as "fix.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Once saved, the icon to click should look like this on your desktop:[external image: Posted Image]
  • Double click fix.bat.

Then let me know if you can access the internet.
Hi Tomk! Thank you very much for your reply and advice. I followed your directions step by step, but unfortunately the internet still did not work after that. Any other suggestions? I also did a DDS scan and RootRepeal scan. I browsed through the logs, but didn't touch anything in fear of making things worse. I obviously don't know much about this stuff, but I do feel like there are still many suspicious files and whatnot lurking on my PC. Let me know if you'd like to see those logs. Thanks, Andrew
Here are the logs Tomk. Thanks again!

AndrewBVY,

You need to tell them over at Bleeping computer that you are already being helped here. You don't want to have multiple people working on your computer at the same time.

JavaRa …by: Paul McLain and Fred de Vries

Please download JavaRa (Copyright © 2008 RaProducts.org) and unzip it to your desktop.
***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***
Print these instructions…you won't have Internet access during this particular phase!
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English or the appropriate language…and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the JavaRa log, in your next reply.

Download Rooter.exe to your desktop

  • Then doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt. Post that here

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Here are the logs you requested from your directions.

I was unable, however, to successfully run combofix. I ran it a few times and it kept freezing. I even let itrun overnight. It got as far as saying it was deleting certain files, but then froze.

But it does appear we are making progress as my internet is now up and running!!

AndrewBVY,

It appears the source of your infection is that you download cracks.

Make certain that Norton is disabled before performing the following:

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    killall::

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Application Data\uTorrent\swirlymms1.2-crack-btbtbt-.rar.torrent
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\My Documents\Downloads\Image-Line Morphine 1.2.5 + PoiZone 2.02 [PC, VST, Crack]\image-line.morphine.1.2.5.pc.cracked-tsrh.rar
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\My Documents\Downloads\Image-Line Morphine 1.2.5 + PoiZone 2.02 [PC, VST, Crack]\image-line.poizone.2.02.pc.cracked-tsrh.rar
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\My Documents\Downloads\swirlymms1.2-crack-btbtbt-.rar
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Hi Tomk, It looks like we may have hit a little wall here. It seems like no matter how many times I try, ComboFix will just not complete its scan. It hangs at different locations every time. I am sure not to click anywhere on the window. In fact once it starts its scan I simply walk away from the computer and let it do its thing. Is there anything else I can do to avoid this??
Tomk,

Here is my MBAM log:

AndrewBVY,

Let's try a different ARK scanner.

Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

  • Right click on gmer.zip and select Extract All….
  • Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
  • Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK.
  • Click Next. It will start extracting.
  • Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.
  • Double click on gmer.exe to run it.
  • Select the Rootkit tab.
  • On the right hand side, check all the items to be scanned, but leave Show All box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard.
  • Open Notepad or a similar text editor.
  • Paste the clipboard contents into the text editor.
  • Save the Gmer scan log and post it in your next reply.

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.
Tomk, After hours and hours of letting GMER run its scan, I woke up this morning to a BSoD. I can't catch a break with these scanners, huh? Is there something else I should try? Thanks, Andrew
AndrewBVY,
