Hi Guys
Been on holiday for a couple of weeks and come back to a trojan. Brother was house-sitting and tells me he was using facebook and things suddenly froze/closed down.
Now have 'personal antivirus' loaded on which i cant uninstall. A bubble appears in bottom left corner of screen occasionally saying the computer is infected with
trojan.win32.agent.azsy
When trying to load webpages a red screen blocks the page and tells me the computer is infected etc etc
Currently running in 'safe mode with networking'
Below is logfile from Hijack this scan just performed.
Any help will be gratefully received.
Many thanks
Darren

Hi, welcome to the WTT Forums. My username is Raktor, and I would be glad to help you with your malware issues. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean
  • Please do not run any scans or fixes without my direction.
  • Finally, stay with this topic until I give you the final 'All clear' post.

Please read through the instructions to familiarize yourself with what to expect when the tool runs.

Please download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.
You must rename it before saving it. Save it as Combo-Fix.exe.

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link:How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts. Close all browsers/windows first.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Hello Sir Thanks for your reply. Im having some trouble doing what you asked though. As I said Im running in safe mode with networking. There is no tray icon for AVG in this mode and when you open user interface in this mode there are no icons or anything to click on to disable. So I tried to download COmbofix but then it told me that AVG was active and needed to be disabled before continue. I couldnt do this in safe mode. So I rebooted in normal mode. I opened AVG user interface but couldnt work out how to disable it completely(i may be missing something very obvious!) Right clicking the tray icon doesnt come up with a disable function. I found a menu under settings which allowed me to disable AVGs resident shield and linkscanner but nothing else. I did this and then rebooted in safe mode with networking. I then tried to download combofix again. I clicked run but then it came up with a grey box saying cannot rename combofix as combofix[1], try using alphanumeric characters…. I noticed your instructions said rename as combofix but it never gave me that option… bit confused now! Sorry for this! hopefully you can guide me some more.. Many thanks Darren
Hi again
I managed to save COmbofix as instructed and then ran it. Not sure if AVG was completely disabled as I described in my previous message but Combofix allowed me to run the scan and here is the logfile created.
Many thanks for your patience
Darren

5) What You Will Need To Post:
  • MBAM log
  • ESET log
  • How the computer is performing now
Hi Raktor Here are the logs. After the combofix scan the 'personal antivirus' desktop icon and the icon in the tray saying i was infected with 'trojan azsy etc etc' had both disappeared. the screen which popped up and blocked my attempts to open webpages had also gone. As you will see the Mbam log and the ESET logs both show infections found. I removed infections found with MBAM as instructed. I did not remove the 13 infections found with ESET as you instructed. I havent uninstalled ESET yet as I was unsure why you said not to remove those infections found and thought we might need it again. Something to note…. My AVG resident shield popped up while ESET scan was running. It had detected 3 infections. I didnt touch it until ESET completed and then just closed it figuring ESET would have found the same items. Hope the logs help, and I await further instructions. It looks like MBAM didn't remove the infections it found - rerun it and be sure to tick all checkboxes so action is taken on all items.
The infections ESET found are mainly in our quarantine and system restore - both of which we will clean up after this fix. :) The few that are lurking around we'll clean up with this script.

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\darren\Desktop\wanadoo1setup.exe
    C:\Program Files\Orange\setup\Orange_icons.EXE

    Folder::
    C:\Documents and Settings\darren\DoctorWeb\Quarantine
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Hi Raktor.
I ran the MBAM quick scan again but it came up with nothing found.
I also ran Combofix as you described and the results are below.
One thing I noticed with combofix-after dragged the txt icon into the CF icon it begins to launch with the blue screen. A grey box then flashes up saying 'windows cannot find the file ……. ' but it happened to quickly for me to tell you the name of the file. the grey box also says it needs to go online to find the file that created it(or something like that). before i had time to click yes to agree to this it continued to run normally. it told me there was a new version of combofix and would i like to install-which i did. the scan then ran as normal and created the log below.
I did both these scans with AVG resident shield and windows firewall turned off.
THanks for your patience!

Congratulations dazzer, it's looking all clean.

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will reset your System Restore and clear out the backups and quarantines created during the course of this fix.

You may delete all of the tools we have used, except MBAM. Keep that, and update and scan with it once a week.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

1. Make your Internet Explorer More Secure
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab.
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.

    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
2. Update your Anti-Virus Software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to update your Anti-virus application on a regular basis. With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

3. Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Without these you are leaving the back door open.

4. Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

5. Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

6. Protect your computer from internet threats with SandboxIE. This program isolates Internet Explorer from the rest of your operating system, 'sandboxing' it away - so malicious websites can't do damage to the rest of your system. There is a Getting Started guide on their website.

7. Finally, I strongly recommend that you read Miekiemoses' good advice - How to prevent Malware

Please reply to this thread once more if you are satisfied so that we can mark the problem as resolved.
Hi Raktor Thanks very much for all your help. A couple of things. The computer does seem to be a bit sluggish on booting up now.. Also when I tried to run 'combofix/u' the system said it couldnt find such a file. i typed it a couple of times and then it did seem to find it and-i think- it has uninstalled. Although strangely when i booted up just now as my desktop was loading a window flashed up which looked like the combofix window and then disappeared again. The computer sounds like it does when its scanning though-if that makes sense. Ive checked in the 'add or remove' programs and combofix isnt listed. MBAM and AVG are not currently scanning so Im a bit perplexed by that… Finally thanks for the tips. One think i had forgot to mention is that I have tried to download Windows Service Pack 3 several times and each time it attempts to install but after about 10 minutes gives me a grey box which says 'access is denied' ? If you consider these issues seperate and want me to close this topic and open another one just let me know. Look forward to hearing from you and thanks again Darren
1. Check C: for me, do you still have either a Combofix directory or Qoobox directory?

2. Sluggishness - run chkdsk. See below.

3. Service Pack 3 can be temperamental; if it won't install, just make sure you install all the other security updates available to your system.

chkdsk Instructions
  • Close any open windows.
  • Go to the Start Menu, Run, type in cmd.exe and press Enter
  • In the command window that appears, type chkdsk /r, and press enter
  • Agree to any prompts - then reboot the computer.
  • chkdsk should run as you boot the machine up - this will check the harddrive for damaged sectors and attempt to repair them.
Hi Raktor In the C drive listings there is a combofix file- I clicked on it and it shows something called 'NircmdB' Thanks for the other Ill run chkdsk etc… Just let me know what to do with this combofix file and then we can close this! Many thanks Darren By the way do you guys accept 'donations'? If so how do I do it?
