i originally posted about an issue of seemingly high RAM usage as detailed here:

http://forums.whatthetech.com/RAM_usage_10…ox_t106092.html

just following up here per recomendation.

i ran ATF cleaner and MBAM already… then when i started to run HJT i a box popped up stating that my system denied write access to the Host file. (screen shot image attached) i followed the last line of instruction Only for Vista users, and it rane with no interruption. logs follow…

thanks in advance for taking the time to look at this :)

Hi Sydey,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Download Rooter.exe to your desktop

  • Then doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt. Post that here

  • Download DDS and save it to your desktop from
  • Here
  • here or
  • here.
    • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
    • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
    • When done, DDS.txt will open.
    • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
    • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • We Need to check for Rootkits with RootRepeal
    • Download RootRepeal from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop.
    • Open [external image: Posted Image] on your desktop.
    • Click the [external image: Posted Image] tab.
    • Click the [external image: Posted Image] button.
    • In the Select Scan dialog, check
      [external image: Posted Image]
    • Push Ok
    • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
    • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
    • Once the scan completes, push the [external image: Posted Image] button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt.
  • Copy/paste the log (that you've previously saved to your desktop) from RootRepeal onto your post.

  • Copy/paste the DDS.txt log (that you've previously saved to your desktop) onto your post.

  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
OK, i think i did it all right…

Sydey,

As we work through your logs. Please remember to run any tools by Right-clicking on the icon and selecting Run As Administrator….

Please download the OTM by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTM.exe to run it.
(Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines inside the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    [Reboot]
  • Return to OTM, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
i have to ask, is there something i have Not run as administrator? do i need to do any again? and if you wouldn't mind explaining to me, what that code for OTM is "moving". how is it going to affect my computer? thanks for all your help. :)
Sydey,

i have to ask, is there something i have Not run as administrator? do i need to do any again?

It doesn't appear that Rooter was run as administrator but I didn't tell you to do that either. It gave us the information we needed anyway. Some of the programs will refuse to run if you don't right click and run as Administrator. The part that confuses some people is that even if you are logged in as Administrator, you still need to run as administrator.

and if you wouldn't mind explaining to me, what that code for OTM is "moving". how is it going to affect my computer?

Those entries are related to the Mywebsearch infection that Malwarebytes' removed earlier. Somehow, you got reinfected.

This should effect your computer by speeding it up. It may reduce redirects.
ok… just so you know, i ran the ATF cleaner again earlier today, since it had been a week ago when i ran ATF, MBAM and HJT.. kaspersky is running right now and has been for an hour and is only 15% done… it must be pretty thorough LOL so here is the OTM report for now, i will post kaspersky when it is complete. Sydey, Kaspersky does take virtually for ever. It will go faster if you don't use your computer. (I don't know if you have a second one to use or not).

Sydey, Well that was pretty anti-climatic for as long as it took huh? :) Please post new DDS logs and let me know if you are noticing anything weird we should be looking for.

Sydey,

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point:

  • Download SysRestorePoint to your desktop and unzip it to it's own folder.
  • Double click SysRestorePoint.exe so that we can make a new system restore point.
  • A box will pop up after it has made a new point, usually after a few seconds. Close that window and exit the program.
Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

You may be asked to choose drive. Choose C: At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Cleanup

  • Double click on OTM to run it.
  • Click on CleanUp!
  • When done, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
ok, i did all that… i do have a few more questions tho… first off, what does all this do exactly(i did it already, just curious what it means)?? Check "Hide file extensions for known file types." Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders." Check "Hide protected operating system files." also, the first one of your techs that i talked to seemed mighty Un-impressed with Norton 360 that i am running… i was always led to believe that Norton is supposed to be a good product… (there is a bit of dialogue about this in the link i provided to my first thread). can you please tell me more? and, if Norton is not the way to go, can you give me your personal preferences? there are just so many options, it's very overwhelming… and, pertaining to my original issue… Mozilla is still using a considerably larger amount of RAM than Chrome does to operate multiple tabs… is that normal? do i just need to go buy more RAM? i only have 1GB, and i just thought i needed more, but a friend of mine said that it should be enough for what i do… (so she directed me to you guys) And, if buying more RAM is what i need to do, how do i know what kind? *sigh* thanks a million for your time and patience :) ~Syd
Sydey,

first off, what does all this do exactly(i did it already, just curious what it means)??

Basically you are just putting settings back to default. It keeps system files out of view so they can't be "accidentally" moved or modified.

I'm not to impressed with Norton either. There are some good free ones in one of the links I gave you. I use Avira on one computer and Avast on another one. I think I prefer Avast. If you do uninstall Norton, I suggest that after you uninstall it, you also run this little program:
Use the link below to see how to run the Norton Removal Tool

The Tech team can give you better information about RAM than I can, but in my opinion, 1GB should be enough for most people. 2GB should be better but more than that is a waste. I'm a little biased probably because I'd like to have 1GB. I have 512MB on one computer and 640MB on the other.

I've never used Chrome so I don't really know. My son tried it and thought it was slower but he's a teenager so what does he know. :)
