[Resolved] system freezes requiring hard reboot

my pc freezes randomly (any time in any porgarm) requiring me to power off the computer.

I have mcaffe security suite running, tried Regcure to fix the problem, used magabyte malware that found 3 errors (fixed?) on the quick scan but have been unable to complete a full scan of the hd because the computer freezes. I have used the WD hd tools and it showed no issues with the hd.

hijack this was recommended by a co-worker so here I am. I am a total novice regarding this type of stuff and would appreciate any help determining what the log below might mean.

thanks,

rehogan

Hi rehogan,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Hello Tomk, I have removed the items per your post. I have not been able ot get the Kaspersky scan completed (system frozen). Will post as soon as It is complete. Thanks, rehogan
rehogan, Seeing as how so much time has passed, please also include a description of what is currently going on with your system. (any changes?)
Hello Tomk, no changes so far. struggling to get the scan to complete without freezing. so far i have made it about 77% throught the scan. once it freezes i cant get the log. on my 5th or 6th try. it has detected 2 infected items. I plan to stop the scan if i can get them both and send a report on them. Here is the log of the 2 items. i will continue to try for a complete scan. ——————————————————————————– KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7.0: scan report Monday, August 24, 2009 Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600) Kaspersky Online Scanner version: 7.0.26.13 Last database update: Tuesday, August 25, 2009 04:06:40 Records in database: 2685397 ——————————————————————————– Scan settings: scan using the following database: extended Scan archives: yes Scan e-mail databases: yes Scan area - My Computer: C:\ D:\ Scan statistics: Objects scanned: 11674 Threats found: 2 Infected objects found: 2 Suspicious objects found: 0 Scan duration: 00:22:07 File name / Threat / Threats count C:\WINDOWS\BBSTORE\DSS\DSSAGENT.EXE/C:\WINDOWS\BBSTORE\DSS\DSSAGENT.EXE Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.Background 1 C:\Documents and Settings\Richard\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst Infected: Worm.Win32.AutoRun.ndc 1 Scanning stopped by the user.
rehogan,

You have and infected email. I can't tell which one. Please go through all of your mail and delete anything you don't want/need/recognize. Odds are that there will be an attachment or at least a link. Therefore, don't open any attachments or click on any links. Then empty your deleted mail folder.

Please download the OTM by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTM.exe to run it.
(Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines inside the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Files
    C:\WINDOWS\BBSTORE

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
  • Return to OTM, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.
Hello Tomk, Thanks for all your help. I have a new issue(s) at start up something dials out (yes I still have dial up). Also while going to the internet communication just stops and the websites simply loop endlessly. Also when oldtimer shut the system down there was a program jushed.exe that would not close. I cant get the dds script to run on my system. I disabled my mcafee but when I double click on the dds.scr it simply opens a notepad window and does nothing?? I have autocad installed on my system and it thinks it is an autocad script (if that means anything). Please advise. Thanks rehogan Here is the log from the old timer. rehogan,

jushed.exe is Java probably telling you that there is a newer version available.

If you have Autocad your going to need to download DDS from the second link DDS.pif

rehogan,

  • Please double-click OTM.exe to run it.
(Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines inside the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "DSS"=-

    :Files
    c:\windows\bbstore

    :Commands
    [purity]

Also let me have a new DDS log.

Hello Tomk, still no imporvement system still freezes (particularly when I try to do a full scan on the sysytem). I am going to see if kaspersky will find anythig more. Thanks rehogan
rehogan,

I'm not finding malware. Your issue doesn't appear to be malware related so I suggest you post in the Windows forum and give the Tech Team a shot at helping tune things up. If you post there, please provide a link there back to this thread so that they can see your logs.

Meanwhile, Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point:

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

You may be asked to choose drive. Choose C: At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Cleanup

  • Double click on OTM to run it.
  • Click on CleanUp!
  • When done, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Hello Tomk, Thanks for all your help. I will pursue the windows group soon. I finally got the kaspersky to runn a full scan on my system (posted below simply FYI) so that is a definate improvment. I have not been able to isolate the infected e-mail. Still working on that. 1) What do I do with the infected dssagent.exe that was moved by OTM ? 2) is there a program that would allow me to know what program(s) are connecting to the internet (real time). Please advise. Once again thanks for all your help, your are a blessing to us who struggle with computer issues. rehogan ——————————————————————————– KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7.0: scan report Saturday, August 29, 2009 Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600) Kaspersky Online Scanner version: 7.0.26.13 Last database update: Saturday, August 29, 2009 20:15:31 Records in database: 2705419 ——————————————————————————– Scan settings: scan using the following database: extended Scan archives: yes Scan e-mail databases: yes Scan area - My Computer: C:\ D:\ Scan statistics: Objects scanned: 98564 Threats found: 2 Infected objects found: 2 Suspicious objects found: 0 Scan duration: 02:12:53 File name / Threat / Threats count C:\Documents and Settings\Richard\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst Infected: Worm.Win32.AutoRun.ndc 1 C:\_OTM\MovedFiles\08252009_194507\WINDOWS\BBSTORE\DSS\DSSAGENT.EXE Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.Background 1 Selected area has been scanned.
