Dell Inspiron 5000 Laptop with Windows 2000 Pro. You guys have helped me in the past and I have great confidence in you. I have 12 years experience with using PC/Windows desktops and laptops in my home based business, so I have some knowledge of operations
For many weeks now:
Computer opens windows slow, including FireFox browser, also at shutdown FireFox takes long to shut down;pages freeze and can't be scrolled for 20-60 seconds (this old computer DOES have small RAM). Have to click sometimes multiple times on a link to make it work.
When I boot up or soon after boot when I try to open an app, I get 2 boxes
application failed to initialize properly
memory could not be "read"
for apps like FireFox, Outlook Express, UnHackMe, Nero DVD Burner.
but the applications do seem to run after 5 or 10 seconds
I have used SpyBot for years, but I downloaded and installed latest version about 3 months ago, it installed and worked OK but as soon as I shut the computer down and rebooted, at end of new boot when teatimer starts to monitor, computer went crazy with a loop of application failures, could only stop by force power down of computer and uninstall SpyBot in Safe Mode. Do not have SpyBot as of today, I can't find a firewall that is compatible with CA Antivirus
I have read the Self Help page, I got latest Microsoft updates about a week ago.
Under View tab I have cleared the box next to "Hide file extensions for known file types."
I DO NOT HAVE the 2 options below,
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
only a line that says "super Hidden" and a box next to it which I have cleared.
There is a folder icon in the View list labeled Hidden and underneath, 2 options NOHIDDEN and SHOWALL, I have a bullet in the Showall option
I downloaded the latest ATF cleaner and ran it today.
I have installed ERUNT and have saved a new file today.
MalWareBites and HiJackThis logs just run this afternoon
