Hi, I found a scumware AVcare.exe on my machine with Avira. i tried to get a HJT log but it runs and closes with no logfile. After that the HJT won't run again and I have to reinstall it but it will only run and close once. Any suggestions? Thanks, Todd

Hi, welcome to the WTT Forums. My username is Raktor, and I would be glad to help you with your malware issues. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean
  • Please do not run any scans or fixes without my direction.
  • Finally, stay with this topic until I give you the final 'All clear' post.

1) DDS
[external image: Posted Image]
Please download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

2) GMER
Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Rename GMER.exe to REMG.exe
  • Double click REMG.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and put it in your next reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

3) RR
Please download RootRepeal.zip.
Save it to your Desktop. Alternate download links here or here.
Please print these instructions, you will not have an Internet connection!
If you have a 3rd party "unzipping" program…use it to open the zipped file…then skip to Step 5. Otherwise…
  • Right click on RootRepeal.zip and select "Extract All"….
  • Click Next on the "Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard."
  • Click on the Browse…button, then click on Desktop, then click OK.
  • Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.
  • Before running RootRepeal:
    • Disconnect from the Internet as your system will be unprotected while using this tool.
Close all programs and temporarily disable your anti-virus, Firewall and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
  • Open the RootRepeal folder and double-click on RootRepeal.exe to launch it.
  • When the program opens, click the Report tab at the bottom, then click the Scan button.
  • In the Select Scan, dialog which asks What do you want to include in the scan?, check ALL the boxes.
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image)
  • Click OK.
  • In the Select Drives, dialog Please select drives to scan: select all drives showing, then click OK.
The scan can take some time to finish. Do not use the computer while the scan is running.
When the scan has completed, a list of files will be generated in the RootRepeal window.
  • Click on the Save Report button and save it as "rootrepeal.txt" to your desktop.
  • Close and exit RootRepeal
  • Double-click on the file rootrepeal.txt… Notepad will open… copy/paste the file contents in your next reply.

Make sure to enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you disabled.
Note: If RootRepeal cannot complete a scan and results in a crash report, try repeating the scan in "safe mode".

4) What You Will Need To Post:
  • DDS logs
  • GMER log
  • RootRepeal log
Thanks. I am already having trouble. It is asking me to choose a program to open the .scr file with. it is recognizing it as an intellicad script file. If I click on the .com file it actually runs a little and then can't find a DDS01 file. The computer with the problem isn't connected to the network right now. I have a laptop to download the files to a flash drive to transfter them. I think that should be OK. Todd
I forgot to tell you it seemed to have trouble booting (maybe it was just taking a really long time) so I booted to safe mode to do this. I also have the ability to boot from a different hard drive if necessary. i put a second drive in with an operating system about a year ago because of a virus problem. Todd
Few options for you to try here, tpknet.

1. Doug Knox's .scr file association fix. Here

2. Try renaming dds.scr to tpknet.scr.

3. Try running DDS in safe mode - instructions below.

===========

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer.
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear.
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
I am running in safe mode. I ran the registry fix and now when I run the dds.scr file it gives me some instructions and then says: FINDSTR: Canno open DDS01 Could Not Find C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\RarSFX1\DDS01
I ran GMER and the results are below. It gave me a message about finding evidence of rootkits.

I ran RootRepeal and it was running. It closed down completely on it's own and I cannot see a logfile. i tried to rerun it and it says access denied.

I tried it in safe mode and it did the same thing.

tpknet,

Do you have access to your Windows XP disc? It might be required to do some patching up later on - if you could tell me if you have one handy, or start hunting for it, that'd be great.

Continue on with these instructions either way.

1) ERUNT
Please download ERUNT to your desktop.
  • Double-click on erunt-setup.exe
  • Follow the prompts to install ERUNT
  • Choose language
  • A set up window will pop up. It will ask: Create ERUNT entry in to the Start up folder, answer NO
  • Backup your registry to the default location
Note: To restore your registry (if needed), go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

2) Avenger
Download Avenger by Swandog and unzip it to your Desktop.

Note: This programme must be run from an account with Administrator priviledges.

  • Open the Avenger folder and double click Avenger.exe to launch the programme.
  • Copy the text in the code box below and Paste it into the Input script here: box.
Begin copying here:

Drivers to delete:
win32k.sys:2
win32k.sys:1

Files to delete:
c:\windows\win32k.sys
c:\windows\win32k.sys:1
c:\windows\win32k.sys:2

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

  • Ensure the following:
    • Scan for Rootkits is checked.
    • Automatically disable any rootkits found is Unchecked.
  • Press the Execute key.
  • Avenger will now process the script you've pasted (this may involve more than one re-boot), when finished it will produce a log file.
  • Post the log back here please. (it can also be found at C:\avenger.txt)

3) What You Will Need To Post:
  • Answer to my question
  • Avenger log
  • A new SysProt log
I have a windows install disk. Erunt didn't run and I foolishly decided to proceed. Avenger said it ran fine and needed to reboot. Now I just get a blue screen of death on bootup. Twice so far. It says session manager init system process terminated.
got it back running by selecting last know good win settings and rebooting. Found out my download of Erunt was no good, I thought it was just the virus making it not work but it wouln't install on my laptop either. i dowloaded a good copy and ran it. Now I am trying Avenger again.
