Hello baseballnut

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum,

All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

Your in the right forum now .

a few weeks back I tried to install VIPRE and remove CA Personal Firewall. I must have done something incorrectly as the CPU is now VERY slow and certain programs don't even open (not to mention i haven't been able to get rid of the CA Personal Firewall fully

It looks like you have CA Internet Security installed along with VIPRE, Try uninstalling the one of your choice via the Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel. FYI, makes no difference to me, but CA Internet Security is offered for free from our cable provider in my area and I installed it on a friends laptop and was very impressed with it. If VIPRE gave you problems than uninstall it, you cant have two.

You also have a password stealer on this system, you need to access a known clean computer and change all your passwords.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O2 - BHO: MS extension - {BE83C3B6-0F77-436c-88B1-A56124A743CB} - fagw32.dll (file missing)

O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Post the report and also a new HJT log please
Thanks for your help

I haven't been able to follow all of your instructions and here's why:
First off, I couldn't completely uninstall VIPRE or CA FIREWALL.

When I tried uninstalling CA FIREWALL, a message popped up:
"Don't have sufficient privileges to install or uninstall CA Personal Firewall
Unable to update registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\ca\CAPF
Try logging on as administrator"

Then when I tried uninstalling VIPRE:
"Error 1500. Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one"

———

I ran TFC - no problem

Then it took me forever to install Malware-bytes, but I can't run in. It just won't run.

Finally, regarding passwords which you advised I change from a clean computer, is this for websites that begin with https:// or just those starting with http://

thanks again for your assistance

and here's my newest HJT log:

Hi,

Which firewall have you decided to keep, do you want to get rid of Vipre?

As far as passwords, what you need to do is go into sites that you frequent like lets say eBay, or any shopping sites like Amazon and change those passwords.

You may have a rootkit preventing you from running malwarebytes and uninstalling one of those programs.

Go to this site RootRepeal

Scoll down until you see the Download heading. You can download it in either RAR or ZIP format. Use whatever is easiest for you.
  • Extract the RootRepeal.exe file from the RAR or ZIP.
  • Disable your antivirus, antispyware, and firewalls before continuing or they may block RootRepeal from running properly.
  • Now run the RootRepeal.exe program by double clicking on it.
  • On the botton click the Files tab and then click the Scan button
  • A Select Drives form will open. Select all of your drives by checking the boxes and then click OK.
  • It will start scanning. Wait for it to finish. It can take awhile depending on how many drives, how many files, how many folders…etc. Be patient.
  • When it finishes, click Save Report and save it somewhere you can easily find it (like your Desktop)
  • Name it NRRlog.txt
  • Copy and Paste to log into this thread.
Hi, in response to your question about if I'd rather keep VIPRE or CA FIREWALL, it doesn't matter - it was just frustrating that I couldn't get rid of either one of them. As far as the log you requested, here it is. Hi,

Your infected with the latest variant of the TDSS Rootkit I need you to run Combofix, make sure you follow the instructions and rename it before you download it as this Rootkit will prevent Combofix from running if its not renamed.

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Good evening,

I have attached first my combofix log followed by my hjt log

thanks again

Hi,

Combofix ran successfully and removed that Rootkit infection If you look under Other Deletions and Drivers/Services , that's what was causing you all your grief.

A bit more to do.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quote box below into it:

PEV -l "%systemdrive%\proquota.exe" >log.txt
start notepad log.txt

Save this as look.bat
Choose to "Save type as - All Files"
Save it to your Desktop

Double click on look.bat & allow it to run. Then post the log which it produces

Do the same for this one also

PEV -l "%systemdrive%\grpconv.exe" >log.txt
start notepad log.txt

You should be able to run Malwarebytes now, open it, check for updates and run the Quick Scan, post the results of those two missing files and the malwarebytes log
Greetings as requested, here are the two results below -c—-w- 50,176 2004-08-04 07:56:55 C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\proquota.exe ——w- 50,176 2008-04-14 00:12:32 C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\proquota.exe Entries: 2 (2) Directories: 0 Files: 2 Bytes: 100,352 Blocks: 196 ——- -c—-w- 39,424 2004-08-04 07:56:49 C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\grpconv.exe ——w- 39,424 2008-04-14 00:12:21 C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\grpconv.exe Entries: 2 (2) Directories: 0 Files: 2 Bytes: 78,848 Blocks: 154 However, I don' think my problem is solved. When I log on to my computer, a "Windows installer" box comes on the screen followed by the words "Prepared to Install" Also, if I leave the computer on for more than a few hours (inactive), when I try to resume, it appears frozen and I always have to restart is this a result of Rootkit? what do you suggest my next step is? thanks!
Hi,

Open Notepad Go to Start> All Programs> Assessories> Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad )and copy all the text inside the Codebox by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above FCopy::

FCopy::
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\proquota.exe | c:\windows\system32\proquota.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\grpconv.exe | c:\windows\system32\grpconv.exe

Save this as CFScript to your desktop.

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

[external image: Posted Image]

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Then follow my previous instructions that I posted and run Malwarebytes, it should run now
Thanks,

here are the 2 logs you requested. See anything interesting?
thanks again!

Hi,

http://www.ewido.net/en/
Ewido is now AVG and you should not have them both as there is no support or updates for Ewido so uninstall it via Add Remove Programs

The rest of your log looks fine, how are things running now ?
Hi, things are running much better thank you very much. I am still having issues deleting one of VIPRE and CA FIREWALL and every so often the WINDOWS INSTALLER (preparing to install) icon and box comes on in the middle of my screen and i have to cancel it which is a pain. I don't know what causes that and how I can remove it. but other than that, all good thanks to you
