Hi, welcome to the WTT Forums. My username is Raktor, and I would be glad to take a look at your log.
Please be advised, as I am still in training, all my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advice.
This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

I will be back to you shortly with instructions. :)

Hi, welcome to the WTT Forums. My username is Raktor, and I would be glad to help you with your malware issues. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean
  • Please do not run any scans or fixes without my direction.
  • Finally, stay with this topic until I give you the final 'All clear' post.

1) Two AntiVirus Programs
You are running two antivirus programs on your machine - McAfee and Avira. Antivirus programs can conflict with each other and cause issues, therefore it is recommended that you uninstall one of these programs through Add/Remove programs.

2) DDS
[external image: Posted Image]
Please download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

3) GMER
Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and put it in your next reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

4) Sysprot Antirootkit
Please download Sysprot Antirootkit from here

http://sites.google.com/site/sysprotantirootkit/

Unzip it into a folder on your desktop.

  • Double click Sysprot.exe to start the program.
  • Click on the Log tab.
  • In the Write to log box select all items.
  • Click on the Create Log button on the bottom right.
  • After a few seconds a new window should appear.
  • Select Scan Root Drive. Click on the Start button.
  • When it is complete a new window will appear to indicate that the scan is finished.
  • The log will be saved automatically in the same folder Sysprot.exe was extracted to.
  • Open the text file and copy/paste the log here.

5) What You Will Need To Post:
  • DDS logs
  • GMER log
  • Sysprot log
Thanks for responding! I looked through my add/remove programs and McAfee is no longer listed? I deleted McAfee awhile ago when I last had problems with my computer.
Ok, we'll take a different approach.

Please download the McAfee Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Double-click MCPR.exe and follow the prompts to remove all traces of McAfee products from your system.
  • You may be required to reboot your computer at the end of the process.

ems88,

1) Combofix Previous Use
I notice that Combofix was run with a script last time - were you receiving help online, or at a PC store? Who created the script (if you know).

Please navigate to the C:\Qoobox\ folder and look for CFScript_used_.txt
The date and time would be 07/09/2009 @15:49 or something very close to that time.
Right click the file and select Send To>Compressed (zipped) file and attach the zipped file in your next reply.

2) P2P Warning
P2P - I see you have P2P software (LimeWire) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It likely contributed to your current situation. This page will give you further information.
Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.
Please see this topic for more information:
Perils of P2P File Sharing.
I would strongly recommend that you uninstall these now. You can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.
If you do not remove it, please do not use it until the end of our fixes.

3) MBAM
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.

4) Kaspersky
Please do a scan with the Kaspersky Online Scanner

As you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan. The scan will not work if you do not do this. Please ensure you close your browser after completion.

  • Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition
    files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a long time, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report

To obtain the report:
  • Click on Save Report As
  • In the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
  • In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
  • In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select Text file [*.txt]
  • Click Save

(Note for Internet Explorer users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)

5) What You Will Need To Post:
  • CFScript file
  • MBAM log
  • Kaspersky log
  • A new HijackThis log
1)I received help online, from this forum, last time. My sister was the one who posted so I guess she created the script? This is the thread from the last time I had trouble http://forums.whatthetech.com/Websites_aut…ot_t104677.html

2) I've deleted Limewire.

I have 2 problems:
1) The C:\Qoobox\ folder compressed is too large to attach here.
2) I'm not using Windows Vista so I didn't have the option of 'run as administrator' and Kaspersky won't let me do the scan. This came up when it tried to update
"Update has failed. Program has failed to start. Close the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 window and open it again to install the program. You must be online to update the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 database. With the lastest database updates, you can find new viruses and other threats. Please go online to use Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0. [ERROR: Key is expired]
We'll try a different online scan then. :)

You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan.

  • Please go here then click on: [external image: Posted Image]

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • The virus signature database… will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
On step 2 of 4 it downloads to 99% and then says "Can not get update. Is proxy configured?" Also, I had to run the Malwarebytes scan because Antivirus Pro had popped up. Here's the log: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.40 Database version: 2586 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 8/11/2009 2:30:35 AM mbam-log-2009-08-11 (02-30-35).txt Scan type: Quick Scan Objects scanned: 99282 Time elapsed: 6 minute(s), 45 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 1 Registry Values Infected: 2 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 2 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\AvScan (Trojan.FakeAlert) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. ems88, Ok, looks like you've got re-infected somehow. Did you notice any correlations between reinfection and the actions being performed on the computer? I also need new DDS and GMER logs - please post these.
Yes, it was probably from watching tv shows online. I'll stay away from those.

Once you've done that, you're looking all clean.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Your current version of Adobe Reader is out of date, and may contain security issues. Please uninstall the version you have now from Add/Remove programs, and then download and install the latest Adobe Reader.

Your version of Java is outdated.
Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
Accept any prompts.
Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

1. Make your Internet Explorer More Secure
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab.
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.

    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
2. Update your Anti-Virus Software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to update your Anti-virus application on a regular basis. With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

3. Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Without these you are leaving the back door open.

4. Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

5. Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

6. Protect your computer from internet threats with SandboxIE. This program isolates Internet Explorer from the rest of your operating system, 'sandboxing' it away - so malicious websites can't do damage to the rest of your system. There is a Getting Started guide on their website.

7. Finally, I strongly recommend that you read Miekiemoses' good advice - How to prevent Malware

Please reply to this thread once more if you are satisfied so that we can mark the problem as resolved.
