My laptop is running so slow it can't be used. Every internet page must be retrted 2 or 3 times to open and even that doesn'y always work. I'm not very savy, but have trried running microsoft onecare scan, malware scan and still have no improvement. Have run a Hijackthis log but can not connect. Please help. I thank you in advance.
Hi ganhoi,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Can you transfer the HJT log from whatever computer you are posting from there?

Tomk, thanks for helping with my problem. A message pop-ed up when Hijack ran. It starts " For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts. file. If any Hijacked domains are in this file Hijack may not be able to this this"

I'll wait for your response, thanks again ganhoi
ganhoi,

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Tomk, can't download TFC. It asks for admiistator permission. This is my personal laptop. I do have a desktop that works A OK. This is my 3rd try to send this message, it is running so slow it won't send e-mails all the time. If thsi doesnt work I'll reply on my desktop, thanks ganhoi
ganhoi,

Because you are on a Vista machine, you will have to run all programs by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator. It sould download OK though.
Tomk, still no luck dowloading TFC. I've got a sick puppy on my hands here. 1st it takes 3 or 4 trys to get to the link then when i hit save it gets to 99% and then a box pops up Destination folder access denied… You'll need admin perm to copy this folder. I'm sorry if I'm doing something wrong, next step? ganhoi
Tomk, loaded malwarebytes from disc

ganhoi,

Well, that was anti-climatic.

Let's dig deeper.

Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

  • Right click on gmer.zip and select Extract All….
  • Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
  • Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK.
  • Click Next. It will start extracting.
  • Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.
  • Double click on gmer.exe to run it.
  • Select the Rootkit tab.
  • On the right hand side, check all the items to be scanned, but leave Show All box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard.
  • Open Notepad or a similar text editor.
  • Paste the clipboard contents into the text editor.
  • Save the Gmer scan log and post it in your next reply.

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.
Tomk, next step was somwhat dramatic. gmer was scanning and suddenly a blue screeen appeared with a shutdown error message. Before I could read it the screen went black and the laptop shutdown. This happened a second time and here we are.
ganhoi,

That sounds like something doesn't want to be found. Were you able to get restarted? If so, let's try a different ARK program:

Please download RootRepeal to your desktop
  • Physically disconnect your machine from the internet as your system will be unprotected.
  • Unzip it to it's own folder, close all other programs especially your security programs (anti-spyware, anti-virus, and firewall) and run RootRepeal.exe
  • Click the Report tab at the bottom and then the Scan button.
  • A box will pop up, check the boxes beside Drivers, Files, Processes SSDT and click OK.
  • Another box will open, check the boxes beside all the drives, eg : C:\, then click OK.
  • The scan will take a little while to run, so let it go unhindered.
  • Once it is done, click the Save Report button, call it RepealScan and save the log to your desktop.
  • Reconnect to the internet.
  • Post the log here in your reply.
Tomk The bandwidth or page view limit for this site has been exceeded and the page cannot be viewed at this time. Once the site is below the limit, it will once again begin serving as normal. I know this machine keeps hancuffing your efforts to diagnose it anything else we can try
ganhoi,

Luckiliy, I have another ARK program in my bag of tricks.

Please download Sysprot Antirootkit from here

http://sites.google.com/site/sysprotantirootkit/

Unzip it into a folder on your desktop.

  • Double click Sysprot.exe to start the program.
  • Click on the Log tab.
  • In the Write to log box select all items.
  • Click on the Create Log button on the bottom right.
  • After a few seconds a new window should appear.
  • Select Scan Root Drive. Click on the Start button.
  • When it is complete a new window will appear to indicate that the scan is finished.
  • The log will be saved automatically in the same folder Sysprot.exe was extracted to.
  • Open the text file and copy/paste the log here.
Tomk, harumph. Downloaded SysPort. Got to log page log started and then locked up, program froze. Now when i try to reaccess either with double click or using right click run as admin. A box comes up and says windows can not accesss device file or path. You may not have permisssion to accces the file. What does Dorothy say to the wizard " thers's probably nothing left in that bag for me" I'll wait and see what's left in your bag of tricks ganhoi '
