Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.com!

May your day be blessed by those you love and those you love be blessed by HIM. - Coyote

You've got a lot of malware on your machine. I think Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware will take a big chunk of it off.

Download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning crapware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de (This is the NEW Version 1.3)
Get AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Download and install these programs in their own PERMANENT folders if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED.

To run Spybot S&D:

After installing first press "Online", click on "Search for Updates", then select all updates. Beside the download button is a little down-pointed arrow, which gives you a choice of several download sites; select one of the servers listed (the Australian server usually works well). Now, press "Download Updates." If that site doesn't work or you get an error message, try a different server.

When the updates are finished, close your browser and ALL WINDOWS EXCEPT THE ONE SPYBOT IS RUNNING IN, then press 'Check for Problems'; THE SCAN WILL TAKE SEVERAL MINUTES. Have SpyBot remove all it finds THAT ARE MARKED IN RED. When it's finished, REBOOT your system.

Then, Run ADAWARE:

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate" button at the lower right of the panel. The current ref file should read at least 01R312 30.05.2004 or a higher number/later date. Updates for this program come out frequently to keep up with new malware. THIS IS CRITICAL; updating is as important as installing these programs.

Then ……..
Make sure the following settings are made and on ——-"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

then……
click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options ON: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

then………
go to settings(the gear icon on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and click "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ………..then…….."Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then…… click "proceed" to save your settings.
To scan, click NEXT. This scan will also take several minutes.

When the scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press "next" and then say YES to the prompt, "do you want to remove all these entries?" Reboot again.

Then run an online virus scan/removal from Trend-Micro. Use the link in my signature to access it.

If the scan was unsuccessful in removing anything, please save that info and supply it in your next post.

Reboot after the scan.

Then please create a PERMANENT folder for Hijack This! and move it there.

If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

When completed, run Hijack This! from it's new folder and post a fresh log file in this thread. :)
Thanks for the assistance! I have ran the scan from Tren-Micro and it detected several infected files. The file could not be cleaned so I deleted them. Hope I didn't shoot myself in the foot by doing so. Here is the last log file from Hijack this.

I sure appreciate all of your help. Hope I can return the favor someday.
Very good job, sawyer

Now you've gotten the"bad" stuff down to a manageable level.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND PROGRAMS!!

Run Hijack This! and fix these things:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\System32\SearchBar.htm

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0000607D-D204-42C7-8E46-216055BF9918} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C5183ABC-EB6E-4E05-B8C9-500A16B6CF94} - C:\Program Files\SEP\sep.dll

O3 - Toolbar: Band Class - {C5183ABC-EB6E-4E05-B8C9-500A16B6CF94} - C:\Program Files\SEP\sep.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [szlfdzbevrh] C:\WINDOWS\System32\szecacok.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qsEf38h] nvrcfgx.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Prein] C:\DOCUME~1\JAMESD~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\app245.tmp

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [bBxpRUNqQ] vmhanui2.exe

This one is probably OK to fix as well:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EpsIeV85D] C:\Documents and Settings\James Dietrich\Local Settings\Temp\EpsIeV85D.exe

Unless you know what it is for. It didn't show up as valid on any of my research. The main reason I'm a little hesitant about fixing it is because it starts with "Ep", which could be an Epson something or other. If you're not sure, don't fix that yet, just supply some properties (file date/time/size/version) in your next post.

After fixing, reboot.

Find and delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\SearchBar.htm <—file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\szecacok.exe <—file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvrcfgx.exe <—file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vmhanui2.exe <—file
C:\Program Files\SEP\sep.dll <—file
C:\Documents and Settings\James Dietrich\Local Settings\Temp\app245.tmp <—file

Reboot once more and post a fresh log. :)
I forgot to mention that those files that need deleted may be "hidden".

Use the link in my signature to tell you how to show hidden files if necessary.

And one other change:

Please change this:

C:\Program Files\SEP\sep.dll <—file

To this:

C:\Program Files\SEP <—FOLDER

(That folder needs deleted)
Hi Michah, Thanks for all of your help. Just a couple more pieces of information before I post the last log. I got a new virus warning from symantec this morning indicating that my computer has a trojan horse (no big suprise I guess) but I can't seem to delete it. Also the spybot program indicates that there are changes being made to the registry. So far I have been accepting the changes. I don't know if that is the correct thing to do or not.

I followed your directions as best I could but was not able to locate a couple of the files I needed to delete in the first part of your message. They were;
04 -HKLM\..\Run [qsEf38h] nvrcfgx.exe and 04-HKCU\..\Run: [bBxpRUNqQ] vmhanui2.exe The internet page went down before I could post my log so I ran the hijackthis program again and this time found one of the previouse files so I ran the fix on that.

For the second part of your message I could not find any of the files that you indicated I should delete. I wonder if accepting the spybot registry changes has complicated the effort?

Here is my last log. And again thank you for all of your help! I am in big trouble.

Log is looking better…

Boot in "safe" mode. Use the link in my signature to tell you how if necessary.

Close all windows and programs, except Hijack This!

Fix these things:

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete these files (they may be hidden):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\SearchBar.htm <—file

C:\WINDOWS\System32\vmhanui2.exe <—file

C:\Documents and Settings\James Dietrich\Local Settings\Temp\app245.tmp <—file

C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate <—FOLDER

Reboot in normal mode.

Then run an online virus scan/removal from Trend-Micro once more. Use the link in my signature to access it.

Reboot after the scan, and post a new log file. :)
Hi Micah, I ran a Hijack this fix on all of the files indicated. I had trouble rebooting in safe mode. The link in your signature was not working, so I just rebooted in normal mode. I still could not find any of the files from the second part of your instructions although the PC was set to scan for hidden files.

I then ran the Tren-Micro virus scan. It picked up one virus called TROJ SMALL.HR in the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\32\crt32_v2.dll The results indicated that it could not be accessed to clean it. I tried to delete it but it would not let me delete it because the application was in use.

Here is my latest log. Thanks for sticking in there with me! :)

You really MUSTdo this in "safe" mode.

Here is how for you to boot in "safe" mode:

Start Windows, or if it is running, shut Windows down, and then turn off the computer.

Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS). What is displayed depends on the BIOS manufacturer. Some computers display a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS, while others may not display any indication that this process is happening.

As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Continue to do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.

Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the Safe mode menu item, and then press Enter

After booting in safe mode, CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND PROGAMS!

Run Hijack This!, and fix these items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\System32\SearchBar.htm

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AutoUpdater] "C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\AutoUpdate.exe"

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [bBxpRUNqQ] vmhanui2.exe

Reboot in "safe" mode again.

Find and delete:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\SearchBar.htm <– file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvrcfgx.exe <– file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\szecacok.exe <– file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vmhanui2.exe <– file

If these files are on your machine, delete them as well:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\CRT32_V2.DLL <– file
C:\WINDOWS\CRT32_V2.DLL <– file

Boot in normal mode and post a fresh log. :)
Yes! was able to reboot in safe mode this time. :D

Everything went well up to the point where I was to find the following files

C:\WINDOWS\System32\SearchBar.htm <– file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvrcfgx.exe <– file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\szecacok.exe <– file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vmhanui2.exe <– file
C:\Documents and Settings\James Dietrich\Local Settings\Temp\app245.tmp <– file
C:\Documents and Settings\James Dietrich\Local Settings\Temp\EpsIeV85D.exe <– file

C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate <– FOLDER
If these files are on your machine, delete them as well:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\CRT32_V2.DLL <– file
C:\WINDOWS\CRT32_V2.DLL <– file

I still had no luck in locating thes files.

The system seems to be running better every time. :)
Hi Micah. Yes it seems as the pop-ups have stopped!!! :) Thank you so much!!! :) :)

One more thing. I just ran the trend -micro virus scan again and it said I had two trojan horse viruses still on the system I tried to clean them but couldn't. Then I tried to delete the files but was only successful in deleting one of them. The other I could not delete because the file was in use. It was called TROJ SMALL.HR and it was on C:\WINDOWS\System32\crt32_v2.dll Do you have any advice for getting rid of this one?
Click Start Menu
Select Run menu
Type "cmd"

A DOS window appears on the screen.

In that DOS window, type these commands:

regsvr32 /u crt32_v2.dll
del C:\WINDOWS\System32\crt32_v2.dll
exit

That should eliminate that critter :)
