Hi rkforan,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Tomk,

Thanks for helping me out. I was able to copy the two apps to my desktop. TFC ran as expected and the computer rebooted. Malwarebytes would not install.

I am now getting a message at boot saying "blobalroot\systemroot\system32\UACyyfvmbmcrr.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.
The title of the window is:
"LongonUI.exe - Bad Image"

I'm also getting the message for
userinit.exe
explorer.exe
mbam-setup.exe
Ymegr_tray.exe
SynTPHelper.exe

I have also posted a new HJT Logfile.

rkforan,

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Tomk, I could copy Combofix to desktop and was able to disable my Norton 360, but when I ran Combofix I got the following: "Combfix.exe - Bad Image" "globalroot\systemroot\system32\UACyyfvmbmcrr.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. I tried it in safe mode with the same result. Kelly
rkforan,

Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

  • Right click on gmer.zip and select Extract All….
  • Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
  • Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK.
  • Click Next. It will start extracting.
  • Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.
  • Double click on gmer.exe to run it.
  • Select the Rootkit tab.
  • On the right hand side, check all the items to be scanned, but leave Show All box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard.
  • Open Notepad or a similar text editor.
  • Paste the clipboard contents into the text editor.
  • Save the Gmer scan log and post it in your next reply.

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.
Tomk, Same thing. I could copy gmer and unzip it, but got the same Bad Image error when I tried to run it. I also checked the restore points. Only two listed. July 26 and July 31. Both are after the problems started. Kelly
rkforan,

Please download RootRepeal to your desktop
  • Physically disconnect your machine from the internet as your system will be unprotected.
  • Unzip it to it's own folder, close all other programs especially your security programs (anti-spyware, anti-virus, and firewall) and run RootRepeal.exe
  • Click the Report tab at the bottom and then the Scan button.
  • A box will pop up, check the boxes beside Drivers, Files, Processes SSDT and click OK.
  • Another box will open, check the boxes beside all the drives, eg : C:\, then click OK.
  • The scan will take a little while to run, so let it go unhindered.
  • Once it is done, click the Save Report button, call it RepealScan and save the log to your desktop.
  • Reconnect to the internet.
  • Post the log here in your reply.
Tomk, I forgot to mention that I did get the following warning when RootRepeal started: RootRepeal Could not read the boot sector. Try adjusting the Disk Access Level in the options dialog. I went to that section of the program and moved the slider all the way down and then ran the scan. I had everything in each tab checked, but it looks like only the drivers section returned any information. Kelly
rkforan,

That makes sense then. Looks like you have a rooter still hiding there. Let's try this:

AVENGER

  • Download The Avenger by Swandog46 from here.
  • Unzip/extract it to a folder on your desktop.
  • Double click on avenger.exe to run The Avenger.
  • Click OK.
  • Make sure that both the box next to Scan for rootkits and the box next to Automatically disable any rootkits found both have ticks in them.
  • Click the Execute button.
  • You will be asked No script has been entered. Do you want to execute a rootkit scan only?.
  • Click Yes.
  • You will now be asked First step completed — The Avenger has been successfully set up to run on next boot. Reboot now?.
  • Click Yes.
  • Your PC will now be rebooted.
  • Note: If The Avenger finds a hidden rootkit driver, then The Avenger will require two reboots to complete its operation.
  • If that is the case, it will force a BSOD on the first reboot. This is normal & expected behaviour.
  • After your PC has completed the necessary reboots, a log should automatically open. If it does not automatically open, then the log can be found at %systemdrive%\avenger.txt (typically C:\avenger.txt).
  • Please post this log, along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.
Tomk,

Avenger appeared to run OK, but found nothing. The two log files are posted below.

When I started the HJT that is on my desktop, it gave the following message:

It looks like you're running HijeckThis from a read-only device like a CD of locked floppy disk. If you want to make backups for items you fix, you must copy HijeckThis.exe to your hard disk first, and run it from there.
If you continue, you might get 'Path/File Access' errors.

I quit the program and then selected "run as administrator" It didn't give any more error/warning messages.

Tomk,

Running Malwarbytes setup as administrator did not work. But I did get it to load when I renamed the file to zztoy.exe. I installed it while in safe mode without the network (so it didn't check for updates). The Malwarbytes program would not run. I renamed it to zztop.exe and then it ran. I did the quick scan, and about a dozen items were removed after reboot. The annoying popup messages about UCAyyfvmbmcrr.dll not being a valid program disappeared. I was gett 30 of these when I booted up. It started with just one. I have posted the Malwarbytes log and a new HJT log. My Norton 360 is still complaining about a FakeAV Trojan, but I can't get it to scan the computer yet.

Thanks so far.

Kelly

rkforan,

Good work. That rootkit is seriously wounded if it isn't dead. Now please delete the version of ComboFix that you have and let's get a fresh copy.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
