Hello SnowGirl,
Welcome to What the Tech.
My name is OCD, I will be helping you with your log today.

Please be advised, as I am still in training, all my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advise.
This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

I am checking over your HijackThis log now, I will post back shortly with instructions.

Hello SnowGirl,

  • You may want to print out these instructions for reference prior to proceeding.
  • This solution is specifically tailored for this particular problem, please do not attempt to use this solution on another computer.
  • If you have any questions, or are uncertain about any steps please ask 'before' proceeding.
- - - - - Next - - - - -

You log shows signs of Norton or Symantec Products on your computer. Do you use these anymore?
If not please follow these instructions:

Remove Norton or Symantec Products

Note : You should first attempt to remove your Norton/Symantec product using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel (Programs and Features, in Windows Vista). This is the best method.

Uninstall anything with Norton or Symantec in the name

After uninstalling using Windows Add/Remove Programs, run the Norton Removal Tool to ensure successful removal of all Norton references.

If no entries are present in the Windows Add/Remove Programs you still need to run Norton Removal Tool below.

Please go to http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgen…005033108162039 and select the product you have

  • Download the Norton Removal Tool.
  • Save the file to the Windows desktop.
  • On the Windows desktop, double-click the Norton Removal Tool icon.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
    Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
- - - - - Next - - - - -

Please download RootRepeal to your desktop
  • Physically disconnect your machine from the internet as your system will be unprotected.
  • Unzip it to it's own folder, close all other programs especially your security programs (anti-spyware, anti-virus, and firewall) and run RootRepeal.exe
  • Click the Report tab at the bottom and then the Scan button.
  • A box will pop up, check the boxes beside Drivers, Files, Processes SSDT and click OK.
  • Another box will open, check the boxes beside all the drives, eg : C:\, then click OK.
  • The scan will take a little while to run, so let it go unhindered.
  • Once it is done, click the Save Report button, call it RepealScan and save the log to your desktop.
  • Reconnect to the internet.
  • Post the log here in your reply.
- - - - - Next - - - - -

Reboot, on your next post please provide the following:
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.
  • RootRepeal scan log
  • Tell me how your computer is running at the moment.

Hi OCD I will print and follow your instructions and let you know what happens I use Rogers Online Protection which is Norton. Thanks Snowy
It is IE Opening up another window. I did not try Kaspersky. When I first got this problem I ran all my Norton Scans (anti Virus, Spyware etc.) Then I tried a program I have called "Window Washer" but I have since uninstalled that. I read the tread you posted and I do not believe the problem is the Rogers Suite. I run it on 2 PC's and one Lap top and have for many years with no problems. I picked up this problem after opening a suposed mp3 music file. My antivirus recognized it and deleted it but Ive had the IE opening unwanted windows ever since. I hope this helps. Snowy

SnowGirl,

I use Rogers Online Protection which is Norton.

According to the logs you provided you have two (2) Firewalls and two (2) Anti-Virus programs installed.
To the best of my knowledge Rogers Online Protection in not currently part of Norton. At one time Norton was provided for Rogers customers, but Rogers
has created their own protection software.

As shown by the items listed below from your log, both of the Rogers Online Protection items are disabled.

AV: Rogers Online Protection Anti-Virus *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated) {5B5A3BD7-8573-4672-AEA8-C9BB713B6755}
AV: Norton Security Online *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {E10A9785-9598-4754-B552-92431C1C35F8}
FW: Rogers Online Protection Firewall *disabled* {80593BF4-D969-4EC5-ADAE-A22F2DFC7A22}
FW: Norton Security Online *enabled* {7C21A4C9-F61F-4AC4-B722-A6E19C16F220}

Can you please tell me when you last updated both your Norton and Rogers Security Suite?

You have Limewire, a P2P/file sharing programs installed on your computer. P2P applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. You'll be doing yourself a favor by removing it.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun…protection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

I would recommend that you uninstall Limewire, however that choice is up to you.

Please go to Start Menu > Control Panel > Add/ Remove Programs
Scroll Down and locate the following programs:
  • Limewire
  • PlayMP3z
  • FriendlyShoppingTips
Select each one of the programs, then select remove.
(if the program is not listed don't be alarmed, just continue with the list)

Exit the Control Panel when finished.

- - - - - Next - - - - -

Please locate each of the folders in red and delete them and their entire contents.
Be sure to delete the entire folder that is designated.
  • C:\Program Files\Limewire
  • C:\Program Files\PlayMP3z
  • C:\Program Files\FriendlyShoppingTips
Right click the file or folder, select Delete.

- - - - - Next - - - - -

Please re-run DDS by sUBs
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Save the report to your desktop.
- - - - - Next - - - - -

Reboot, on your next post please provide the following:
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Tell me how your computer is running at the moment.

Rogers was using Norton … I didnt realize it isnt Norton anymore … I think it changed a few months ago …. I deleted … C:\Program Files\PlayMP3z• C:\Program Files\FriendlyShoppingTips <—– I think this guy was the culprit
SnowGirl,

On your last post you overlooked this step.

  • Are you still getting the pop-ups?
  • Tell me how your computer is running at the moment.
SnowGirl,

You posted the Attach.txt report. Although that can be helpful I need to see the DDS.txt log.

Please re-run DDS and copy and paste a new DDS.txt log here for review.

SnowGirl,

Your most recent DDS log continues to show you have 2 Firewalls and 2 Anti-Virus programs running.
This situation really needs to be addressed. Having more than 1 firewall and anti-virus protection running at any one time can actually do more harm than good.

AV: Rogers Online Protection Anti-Virus *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {5B5A3BD7-8573-4672-AEA8-C9BB713B6755}
AV: Norton Security Online *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {E10A9785-9598-4754-B552-92431C1C35F8}
FW: Rogers Online Protection Firewall *enabled* {80593BF4-D969-4EC5-ADAE-A22F2DFC7A22}
FW: Norton Security Online *enabled* {7C21A4C9-F61F-4AC4-B722-A6E19C16F220}

Please take a moment to decide which program you would like to use. You should uninstall the other.

If you choose to remove the Rogers Online Protection, do so via the Add/Remove Programs menu in the Control Panel.

Please go to Start Menu > Control Panel > Add/ Remove Programs
Scroll Down and locate the following programs:
  • Rogers Online Protection
    (may also be called Radialpoint)
Select each one of the programs, then select remove.
(if the program is not listed don't be alarmed, just continue with the list)

Exit the Control Panel when finished.

When you run the DDS scan it is important to disable any script blocking protection prior to the scan. (i.e. firewalls, anti-virus, real-time scanner)
Please follow the link below to do this if you need guidance. Re-enable after you have completed the scan.

- - - - - Next - - - - -

Please re-run DDS by sUBs
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs) < < Important
