- In the last few days our computer has been acting erratic. It has slowed down to a snails pace, and we have windows opening up at will trying to sell us stuff. I have ran avg, spybot search and destroy, norton antivirus, etc. The following is a list of potential infections:

Burstmedia
Hupigon13
Matchcraft
Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallBypass
Smitfraud-C
Virtumonde
Win32.BHO.sx
Win32.Fraudload.edt
Win32.Agent.ieu
Win32.sdbot.aad

- Most were removed, but directed me to turn off Windows System Restore. I tried to do this, but cannot. Instead all directions pointed to Hijack This. I have included the log below.

Hello.

Please run DDS for me. Post the logs once it's complete please.

Thanks.

Download and run DDS

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results soon.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results and then click Ok.
  • The black and message box window shall then disappear.
  • Please save both log files on your desktop and post the DDS.txt and zip up and attach Attach.txt as instructed.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE

With Regards,
Extremeboy

Please refer to this page for full instructions on how to run ComboFix.

  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double click ComboFix.exe to start the program. Agree to the prompts.
  • When ComboFix is finished, a log report (C:\ComboFix.txt) will open. Post back with it.
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.

ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may call it to stall.

Hello.

Please run Malwarebytes for me.

Download and run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Post a new set of DDS logs afterwards by running DDS again.

Thanks.

Hi Extremeboy, I have attached the Malwarebytes log. The computer seems to be running way better – it is faster, and there has been no mysterious things happening. I haven't run the Kapersky on-line to double-check yet, but things seem to be working great. Thanks so much for your help. Andrew
Another question. I have attached the results of the Kapersky On-line scan which was conducted after the Combo-Fix & Malabytes procedures. It has comeback with infections, although they are quarantined by Norton. Is it ok to delete these?

Hello.

I was going to ask the Kaspersky scan run after I see the MBAM log, but seems you read my mind. :P

A few things we still need to do.

Please do the following.

Download and Run OTM

  • Please download OTM by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the [external image: Posted Image] icon on your desktop If you are running on Vista, right click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Paste the following code under the [external image: Posted Image] area. Do not include the word "Code".
    :files
    C:\WINDOWS\msa.exe
    C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\msxml71.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\SystemService32
    :commands
    [EmptyTemp]
    [Reboot]
  • Click the large [external image: Posted Image] button.
  • If OTM requires are reboot, please allow it to do so.
  • Copy/Paste the contents under the [external image: Posted Image] line here in your next reply.
Note: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Please take a new DDS run afterwards and post back with those log as well.

Thanks.

Extremeboy

Hello.

You have 2 anti-virus software installed.

Please remove either Norton Anti-Virus or AVG

Why?

1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.

How's your computer running at the moment? Any more problems/symptoms left?

With Regards,
Extremeboy
