I was referred to the Malware Removal Forum – not sure I am in the right place yet… But here goes: I am running Windows home XP. Apparently I have picked up a rather vicious infection. It seems every time I turn the computer on it gets worse. It has disabled the task manager and other things. It will shut itself down and give me a message that since I am not running an antivirus program, windows is shutting down. I have had 2 different "protection" programs come up of which I don't know if they are a part of Microsoft's programs or something I should not download from fear there is more malware in them. The first was a shield with Microsoft color scheme and the second was a gold shield with black stripes. I don't even want to turn the computer on again until I get little guidance. I downloaded HJT to my desk top. Clicked the icon, clicked run.... the directory flashes and closes before you can actually read what it says. Message pops up: "Application cannot be executed. This file NAVAPSVC.EXE is infected. Please activate your antivirus software." Also a message says, "System Security Harmful software detected..." And... "Attention! System detected a potential hazard (TrojanSPM/LX) on your computer that may infect executable files ...." And, "...Lsas.Blaster.Keylogger to send your credit card details to remote host...." And, "Click yes to download official xxxxxxx (cant read my writing but think it says 'intrusion') detection system (IDS Software) Something came up willing to charge at a couple of different levels to make it all go away. So, at the moment, I need help running HJT. Thank you.

It may be wise to take the infected computer off line till we can see what's going on with it...we need a diagnosis.

download the following programs to another computer and transfer over via USB..

run this program on your USB first so we don't transfer infections:

Download Flash_Disinfector.exe from HERE and save it to your desktop.

• Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
• The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
• Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
• Reboot your computer when done.

Please download DDS from either of these links

and save it to your desktop.

• Disable any script blocking protection
• Double click dds.pif to run the tool.
• When done, two DDS.txt's will open.
• Save both reports to your desktop.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.

• Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
• Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
• If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

• In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
  • Sections
  • IAT/EAT
  • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
  • Show All (don't miss this one)
• Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
• Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  
• Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Not to be considered a dunce, but to ensure I understand your directions...

* I will need to buy or borrow a flash drive (any suggestions on what I would need, presumably not much?)

* I will download Flash_Disinfector.exe to a borrowed computer's desktop or just the flash drive and then load on the infected computer's desktop?

* I will run the F_D.exe on the borrowed computer?

* When prompted, I will run F_D on the new or borrowed flash drive?

* When completed on the flash drive, I will reboot the borrowed computer?

* If the the down load is not put on the flash drive as mentioned above, do I copy the file from the borrowed computer's desktop to the flash drive after reboot?

Since I will be dealing with 2 computers several miles apart, would there be any problem downloading the three programs mentioned at the same time to the flash drive or will i have to make three different trips between computers?

Hi,

I think the instructions I gave will likely cause you too much difficulty if the computers are far apart.

Thumb drives (USB's) are relatively cheap to acquire, but any removable storage will do. If you wanted to download the programs to another computer and burn the programs to a CD that will be fine too.

Or you can risk going online with the infected computer for the short time it will take to download these programs, it just sounded from your description, that the minute you are connected more infestations come on board that cripple the computer.

download flash disinfector to the clean PC being used...run the program with the USB connected...run that program on the infected computer also.


If you decide to download the files to another computer - copy the files from the desktop to the USB

You will also likely need ComboFix once I have made a diagnosis from the first scans, so to save you some trouble - download that one as well and have it ready:

Download Combofix from either of the links below. You must rename it before saving it.
Save it to your desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

• If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

I took the chance and downloaded directly on the afflicted machine. The Flash_Disinfector would run and then Norton Antivirus came up with a message wanting to know if I wanted to stop or run the following script & that my computer was stopped until I answered. "C:\Docume~\Name\LOCALS~1\Temp\drives.vbs" It moved on but I am not sure what happened. I then tried to run the DDS and each time a message came up: "Application cannot be executed. The file is infected. Please activate your antivirus software. Then "Advanced Virus Remover" would pop up and run. I don't think I downloaded that. I presume it isn't related to the DDS. I reckoned it to be a ploy to get money on a faux program or worse. So I have stopped there. I will very likely need help on how to disable the anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware programs I have. I haven't tried before and haven't a clue. I am not really certain what I have on the machine that is actually running. Perhaps I am a bit of a dunce if not naive.... Thanks again!

Did you download the ComboFix program?

If not - lets move directly to that as I don't think the fake virus programs are going to allow you to do much of anything.

You need to disable Norton so it is not running:

Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a sign.

• right-click it -> chose "Disable Auto-Protect."
• select a duration of 5 hours (this assures no interference with the cleanup of your pc)
• click "Ok."
• a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled and the sign will now look like this:

You have successfully disabled the Norton Antivirus Guard.

If ComboFix will not run in normal mode...run it in safe mode.

Download Combofix from either of the links below. You must rename it before saving it.
Save it to your desktop.

I ran the Combo-fix.exe in safe mode. A messge came up indicating (I think) that something was missing regarding the restore date and that it would connect to the internet and download something from micrcosoft. I connected the computer but it didn't reconize it was back on line again so it skipped that part and went on. Below is the report. This process has cleared up some of the annoyances already --- at least so far.

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As... Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save ...

• Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
• ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
• When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
• Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

**Note**
When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.

• Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

Well, I goofed up the instructions - I understood what was meant after I went through what I thought was the correct process.... After I got it right, the combofix didn't run right - hung up. Then when I tired to run combofix again an error message came up that it couldn't be renamed combo-fix but needed a different alpha numeric name. So.... what would you have me do now? Sorry about the goof up.

OK Not really sure, I understand exactly what has happened. Delete the copy of ComboFix that you have from your desktop. Download a fresh copy from one of the links provided in my initial instructions run it normally (without the previous script I made) let Combofix install the recovery console. Post the resulting log and then I'll give you another script if required.

I deleted from the desk top and recycle bin. I downloaded the CF and re-copied and pasted the script in note pad to the desktop. Rec'd the same message again. Do I need to remove the CF in a different fashion to effectively remove the software before downloading a fresh start? Thanks.

Hi, Please delete the copy of combo fix that you have on your desktop. do this by right clicking the icon and select delete. Download a fresh copy - do not rename it. do note run it with my previous script. please run it normally and post the resulting log. If it will not run for some reason without you having to rename it - call it Combafix

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As... Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save ...

• Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
• ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
• When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
• Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

**Note**
When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.

• Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.
