Hello, Tech Team! :notworthy:
This PC was filling up with so many pop-ups that it was useless to my friend Maggie, so she asked if I could help. I updated and ran a full mbam scan from a cd and got two Koobface worms. I also ran ATF and StartUpLite. She has Kaspersky Anti-Virus so I updated that and ran a full scan. I have an HJT log. After mbam, there were no pop-ups, but I noticed that weird little things were happening such as having to retype things because I was getting bumped off of typing fields*, when I accessed the Task Manager, sometimes it would fill up with multiple entries on the applications tab and the D drive (CD) was not appearing on the My Computer screen (it's back, now). The computer is slow; it is a Pentium, 4 CPU 2.80GHz, 256 MB of RAM. The system is Windows XP Professional, version 2002, service pack 2.
She has Webroot Spy Sweeper which is expired. It was sending annoying pop-ups, so I disabled it, I thought, but tada! the pop-ups won't stop. I'd love to just uninstall it. * Ah! Every time the Spy Sweeper pops up, it knocks me off the field where I'm typing.

Here is the mbam log which found the two worms:

Hello Kathy

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum,

All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

Sorry about the delay, but the amount of people posting with infected computers is through the roof and sometimes we can't get to logs as fast as we would like to.

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Hello Kathy,

Go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall Viewpoint, it installs without your knowledge or consent, is considered Adware, uses system resources and is not needed for anything.

Even though Combofix did not remove anything and your HJT log looks fine, there where entries on your HJT log for a rootkit infection, I won't be sure its present until you run these scans.

Lets try this one first

Download gmer.zip and save to your desktop.
alternate download site
  • Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.
  • When you have done this, disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
  • Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan…click NO.
  • Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..
Hello, Ken! :D I removed Viewpoint. I ran GMER, but could not retrieve the log. It did not want to scan in safe mode. The first time I ran it, it was taking a while, so I walked away from the console. When I returned, the open GMER window was gone, so I ran it again. This time, I was able to hit the COPY button. It copied to clipboard but then gave me a 'not enough resources' error when I tried to open a text document. Shall I try again or do something else? :wavey: Kathy
Try this one

Rooter Rootkit Detector - Please Download from here to your Desktop:
  • Doubleclick it to start the tool.
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive% (usually C:)\Rooter.txt.

Hello, Ken! ^_^ It is slow, but nothing weird right now. Should I get rid of the Kaspersky and install a free av? Did the Kaspersky actually remove anything? What do you think about the Webroot Spy Sweeper? It's expired and I think it's a pain. Wouldn't a good av do the job? I'm going to install McAfee Site Advisor. :wavey: Kathy
Hello Kathy,

Webroot Spy Sweeper <– a very good program, but I installed it on one of my systems last year and it really clogged it up,uninstalled it and things where back to normal, on the other hand we have it on 90+ computers where I work and no problems. So this is your call to keep it or not.

Kaspersky
<– This is also a good program, yours to keep or remove and install something else.

Lets run this program, it wont fix anything but I need to see the report.

Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • DDS.scr
  • DDS.pif
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Can you tell if Kaspersky removed anything? :o I'm going to run that scan again.

What does it mean? Is it detecting malware but not removing it?

It looks like its trying to tell you to run an update for Microsoft Office. Those files are vulnerable but not infected Your logs look fine.
Thank you, Ken! :D So, should I run the updates then run the scan again? I put "How did I get infected in the first place" on the desktop for Maggie. I gave her the link to follow this thread. I deleted Combofix, the Rooter, GMER, DDS…I left ATF, MBAM and StartUpLite in a folder on the Administrator's desktop. Perhaps Maggie will try posting if she thinks she's infected in the future. I have to start a thread on a computer which my mother gave me. I can't get on the internet with it. My PC has to go back to my computer guy tomorrow morning, so I won't be able to go on-line. If I can get my mom's to work, I'll have a back-up pc. I can't stand being cut off from the internet! :wavey: Kathy
I think just running the updates will be fine.

Just start a new topic for the other computer.

Looks like you got rid of most of them anyway.

Malwarebytes <– Yours to keep also, check for updates and run a scan now and then.

Combofix <—Is not a general cleaning tool, just run it with supervision or you can bork your system

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

  • How did I get infected in the first place ?
Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
  • Tutorial for System Restore <– Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 3 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
Ken
:notworthy: Ken, Thank you so much for helping me to help Maggie! I'm passing along a big thank you from her as well. :woot: I just called her. She's very excited about getting her computer back, clean. (I ran the updates.) I'll be bringing my PC back to my guy tomorrow, so I might not be back on-line until Thursday, depending on what happens with my PC. :wavey: Kathy
