Hi all, and thankyou for reading this.

I'm after a spare part for the topic title laptop, but before that, let me explain the predicament:
(if you want to go straight to my problem, without all the story, just go to the bottom of this post, where it says "SO…")

This *was* my main laptop, but due to teaching family the basics of computing,it became their main laptop :pullhair:

That'll learn me!

Anyway, i upgraded the ram on it, and left it as is.

I noticed not too long back that it was gathering dust in a corner… so i asked the question:
Whats wrong with the laptop?

"It wont power on" was the reply.

Now, i dont know if the laptop was used to death or what else, but it was right, nothing when the power button was pressed.

so i completed the basics:
  • Removed the battery and tried power cable only - Nothing
  • Removed the power cable, battery only - Nothing
  • Removed BOTH (yes, i was clutching at straws) - Nothing
  • Pressed the power button for 1 minute with both detached, replaced battery - Nothing
  • Replaced power cable - Nothing - But…

I noticed the blue light surrounding the power jack was not on
  • Pulled the lead from the power pack, plugged lead into laptop, plugged mains in, reconnected power pack. - The usual *pop* was heard (as the power pack powered up)

My thought at this point was a break in the lead, between the power pack and the jack on the laptop (as there was power getting to the pack, the fuse had not blown, but no light on the jack input to the laptop)

I ordered a new power lead, it arrived - Nothing!

I borrowed a battery from a shop, which we knew worked, and the laptop powered on.

Now, i downloaded the PDF service manual for my machine, to see if the power circuit board was intergrated into the motherboard, andthis one is not! Yippee!

Now..how to get to it… I had to strip the WHOLE LAPTOP APART just to get to this board 3cms by 5cms, right down to the motherboard. It Took AGES!

Anyways, i now have what i hope is the offending part in my hands (with only 1 plastic lug snapped off in the whle disassembly, i was well impressed with myself!) and NO IDEA where to start to look for a replacement. I have noticed that this part has a broken plastic socket where one of the mainboard cables connects, so i am hoping this will solve it.

So…

Where can i get this spare charging interface board from?

The Spec's:
——————————–
Compaq Presario f500
S/N CNF7042L3T
P/N RY575EA#ABU

HPService Tag F545ea
——————————–

On the part, there is several markings:
Etched onto the board: DAOAT8TB8F2 REV : F
Sticker 1:
E36

Sticker 2:
34ATSDB0017
6520966F CF3D
——————————–
On sticker 2, the B between D and 0 may be an 8. the 0's are zero's
etched onto the board, the o looks more like the letter (more rounded than the zero's)

This piece has the jack plug for the power cord, and 1xUSB2.0 connection. it has 2 places for leads connecting to the motherboard, and near the RAM module housing.

If there is any further info i can give, please dont hesitate to ask.

Thanks in advance, all advice is appreciated, no matter how critical! :D
That is almost exactly what i'm looking for! Almost being i need the UK site, but now i know what to look for, i'm set! Thankyou for your time appleoddity! i feel a little more confident now, as i was second guessing myself earlier! (even though i had a laptop infront of me is several hundred pieces! ;) I'll post an update in due course!
Update 1: Item found on UK site, EXACT part number (thankyou again for letting me know what to search for AO!) Item ordered and paid for… 10-21 days to wait… Tic Tic Tic!
Part came, installed it, and nothing! :( I got myself a voltage tester, tested the outputs from the charging jack board, and the voltages *seem* to be getting through, only they are on both boards :'( so that was time and money wasted! I also noticed there was nothing getting to the connecors the battery would touch. When these boards are disconnected from the motherboard, and the charger applied, the blue charging light appears. Attach it to the motherboard, and the light wont come on. I have however, got my hands on another laptop the same as mine but with a broken screen, no harddrive, ram or disk drive. Gonna try the motherboard (any perhaps some other parts) and see if i get lucky. If not, then its Ebay time! (Sold as broken)
Yeah… It sounds like a motherboard now. You've got the other laptop. See if that motherboard powers on. Swap the RAM from your laptop to the other one you acquired and see if the motherboard will power up. Just because the screen is broke (cracked) doesn't mean you won't see some video to show you that it is posting. If the motherboard is posting, its time to swap the motherboard. Although, it sounds like there might be a short on the motherboard. Maybe it is just some damage around the jack that is shorting something out. A visual inspection may reveal something. Depending on your skills you may remove the motherboard from the case completely and power it up with only the bare essential components to see if it is shorting out on the case or anything else in there.
Thats the thing AO, the power jack is on a seperate small board on this model, and is the part i replaced to start with. I found traces of brown sticky substance around the touchpad when i had it apart, so i'm thinking that may be a clue ;) Of course… no-one admits spilling anything! Strange how it powered up with the spare, fully charged battery the first time. I should have swapped it then for mine, just to be sure ;)
I'm having trouble locating a motherboard for a competitive price. Any idea where i should be looking? The seller deleted his/her account on ebay on the last one i won, and refunded my payment :(
Motherboards are never cheap for laptops. Ebay is where you will find "competitive" prices. That price will be around $125-$175 U.S. dollars.
Hi Mr Darn,
There have been a lot of faults reported with these motherboards……..
It is rumoured that HP are offering an extended warranty in some circumastances and replacing motherboards free, but none of my customers have been this fortunate!…….

You will need to visit the HP site and input your tag and Machine details…….
No guarantees…… but its worth a try
see the last post here in this thread….

My pc is listed among those for repair, so i shall be contacting them for help. Its disgusting that they have not contacted me, i mean, whats the HP registration process for if not this? I would not have thought about checking for that had it not been suggested. I will let you know!
