I often disappear from the forum on weekends. When this happens I'm usually where there isn't internet access. (No electricity, phones, or cell service either).

As I was getting ready to head back to civilization on Sunday afternoon, I started thinking about the open logs I needed to respond to when I got back and I thought about how so many are stuck staring at their computer screen waiting for help, while I wasn't. So… I grabbed my camera a snapped a couple pictures for those of you who might not know what their missing.

Most people and their problems are a few miles away.

Here is my "company"

Or sometimes they are a little "wilder"

The only fireworks I got on the fourth was a fairly impressive lightning show. But even in the daylight, I still get a "display".

With all that and you come back to the computer? :smack: I could get into some of that. Reminds me of my younger years when I use to go hunting.
Staying up there don't put food on the table. :)

Then you would have liked a picture I didn't take. That meadow in the second picture is pretty much in the middle of the property. There were 70 to 80 head of Elk in there friday night. And this is the first time in a long time I went all weekend without seeing any Turkey.

You're killing me
Impressive hills btw. But anything in those heights are for us Danes. The highest point in denmark is 141 meters above water  Anyways, must be very relaxing hiking around there :)
Nice pics Tomk, thanks for sharing. Coming from an overpopulated little island, I just love all that wide uninhabited space you guys have over there.
How can you think of malware logs - all I could think of regarding logs is a beautiful log fire with no other sound than crackling wood. Heaven! Thanks for sharing, Tom Satchfan
Not a very good picture. I'm probably 3/4 of a mile away, but… the redish "patch" in the middle of the picture is 500 to 600 head of elk. They are spread out over about 1/4 mile. With binoculars I counted at least 38 large branch bulls.

Spotting that size of herd must have left you breathless!

In my own hunting experience I've only seen groups of up to 9 - 12 elk at a time, and usually fewer.
My experience is in SW Washington State around the Mt. St. Helens area.
The underbrush and forest is so thick that it is extremely rare to get a view of 100 yards.
Most of the time my shots were under 100 feet.
I've actually been standing in the middle of small herds and not be able to see them because of the dense brush and they not being able to see me.
I could hear their heavy hoof falls and breathing/snorting.
And I've been in the middle when one or more animals started the high pitched and loud "whistling" alert that elk do, just before they bound away.

It would sometimes be incredible to try to follow.
Knowing that they had bulled their way through an area easily and rapidly, but the evergreens, berry vines, and devils club, vine maple and alder would literally close up behind them as they passed.

I would take off, thinking to "follow their trail" only to discover that they had used their size and power to simply and rapidly move through the area regardless of obstacle.

Such experiences left me breathless and very far behind, many a time.

Here's a pic from a clearing behind my parents' family home where I grew up.
We created a clearing as an extension of an orchard, and the elk do enjoy browsing and resting there.
You can somewhat get an idea of the dense surrounding area into which they can quickly disappear.

You must be someone with a lot of patience and also quite stressfree as many researchers claim that only 5 minutes with nature can boost mental health.
Wow I can almost smell the fresh air… some of those shots remind me of the foothills in New Mexico right before the Rocky's… Wish I were there.. Thanks a milion… Mobius_1985
Being a preacher and knowing what God has done and created, I am like TomK. Me and my wife ride out on motorbike into mountains and open plains and such. Places we been have been to Maggie Valley, Hill is NC, SC, Tenn, Georgia, Ark and such. I find a quite spot to sit and refelect can take you away, lol most times I get into it I don't want to come back into the real world. We all should take the time to get away and clear the nogging because it does help. Nice pics Tom.
