That looks better, but you still have the error message at boot, right?

I see this: [C:\Documents and Settings\Kathryne Miller\Local Settings\Temp\clclean.0001 (22)]

Seems to be related to Soundblaster/Audigy soundcard.

That should have been deleted by CCleaner, ATF CLeaner or TFC. Can you look and see if that file is there, if so, delete it. May have to boot to Safe Mode to delete it, but try it normally first. Also let me know if there are other files still in that temp folder.

Looks like we're at the point where you need to uninstall the Sound Blaster Audigy (Creative) software from Add or Remove Programs. You have already downloaded them from the Dell site so uninstall them one at a time, then reboot and see what happens.

1st - Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED MB Product Registration.
2nd - Sound Blaster ADVANCED MB drivers
3rd - Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED MB

Meantime, I'm going to ask some of the other folks here for any more suggestions they may have.
I do not see that file listed as you have stated it. I do not have a local settings folder showing under my name folder. I did a file search and found the file clclean.0001 listed in c:\i386 should I delete it from there? Does this need to be done before I go into control panel and take care of the sound blaster stuff? I also see in random spots items for limewire. I got rid of that eons ago. It does not show in my control panel but like I said I see parts in odd spots. Is there some kind of removal tool like the norton one to eradicate it from my system?
No, don't delete it from C:\I386. Try this:

Start then Run, type (copy and paste is easier) C:\DOCUME~1\KATHRY~1\LOCALS~1\Temp and press Enter.

That should open Windows Explorer to that folder.

In any case, go ahead and start uninstalling the Sound Blaster Audigy stuff as I showed.
I deleted the file from the directory given. I also noted a clclean.0001 folder in there too. I uninstalled the 1st item and rebooted. Still had error. Uninstalled the 2nd item and rebooted. Still had error. In uninstalling the 3rd item I encountered a pop up of the same error. Click past it and finished and rebooted. Error is gone from boot. I still have sound on web sites and I inserted a dvd into my drive. I had to manually start my media center to play it. (For some reason – I no longer have auto play from the drive. I noticed a new line item in my control panel (must have been placed there when trying to reinstall the items) It states: Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED MB Demo Sound I also remove this? And do I go an click on the items I downloaded from the Dell Site? I only downloaded 2 items. I also still have the drive name situation. I noticed that I no longer have the cd drive show up in the fly out menu when I right click on an object and select send to: Does this mean at this point I can't burn anything?
One step forward, two steps back!!!! :pullhair:

Please go ahead and install the drivers you downloaded from Dell now. Hopefully that will not cause the error on boot to reappear.
Also see what that does for Autoplay of CD/DVD drive. If it doesn't help, download and run Microsofts's Autoplay Rrepair Wizard, see if that resolves the problem.

For the problem of the CD/DVD drive not appearing in the Send to list, see here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316529

With that, I'm calling it a night. Hope to hear nothing but good news from you in the future
well neutral news anyway. After reinstalling the two things I downloaded from the Dell site I still do NOT have the error reappearing. So good news there. In my control panel add/remove I only have: Sound Blaster ADVANCED MB Drivers and the aforementioned new one Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED MB Demo showing in the list I do not have: Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED MB Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED MB Product Registration I tried running the autoplay on the two listed cd drives. The first one e: said it repaired it. But after reboot it still did not auto play, And on the f: one it said basically it couldn't figure it out. I am not really concerned with that. Sometimes not having an autoplay is actually a good thing. I did not try the other item in terms of the drive showing up. It involved messing with the registry. I want to really look over those instructions before I try that this late at night. Had a long day at work and I don't want to unintentionally do something wrong in there. Followup on the slow FireFox startup. After waiting for bootup to completely finish, it took approximately 23 seconds to open. It did pop right open to my home page (meaning the browser did not open and then wait for the page to load). I have no lags once it's running. The opposite is true of IE It will open the browser and occasionally stall on page load. fastest thing to do is close it an reopen then it is ok. It may be because it seems I am still running 6 I thought I was at least 7. I did not like 8 (as this is what it did when I briefly had 8 – so when I restored my machine I did not update to 8. But hey the original error message is now gone. Progress I say!
BTW the instructions on the link you gave for fixing the cd drive to show up did not mention what entries to put in the registry for the drive if it is a dvd writer drive ? Do I just substitute dvd for cd in the line item for the registry?
I have a CD-RW and a DVD-RW, both have Drive Type REG_DWORD 0x2 so it looks like 1ROM and 2=RW.

Check the Properties of your DVD burner, see if the Recording tab is there. Follow directions from the MS article

Step 3: Verify that Windows recognizes the drive as a recordable device

To see what your values are set to without using regedit (the registry editor), do the following:

Use reg query from a command prompt. Note there are double quotes around the entire registry key. :
reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives"
That will list your DVD drive and it's {GUID}.On my computer I get the following:

! REG.EXE VERSION 3.0

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives\Volume{6016d1d1-f743-11dc-b0b7-806d6172696f}

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives\Volume{6016d1d2-f743-11dc-b0b7-806d6172696f}

Use reg query again with the {GUID}:
reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives\Volume{6016d1d2-f743-11dc-b0b7-806d6172696f}"
I get:

! REG.EXE VERSION 3.0

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives\Volume{6016d1d2-f743-11dc-b0b7-806d6172696f}
Drive Type REG_DWORD 0x2
CurrentCDWriteSpeed REG_DWORD 0xffffffff
MaxCDWriteSpeed REG_DWORD 0x28

The only difference I see between the two drives is the write speed, CD is 0x10 (16 decimal) and the DVD is 0x28 (40 decimal)
Ok here we go backwards again. When I attempt to do step 2, I do not see anything remotely related to the instructions nor your example. All I have is a very short default entry listed. See screen shot. When I skip that and try to verify anything like step three (both e and f) the drive shows as cd drive and when I click on properties there is no recording tab. I go into system information and the device manager's hardware tab and the following is listed for the dvd/cd rom drives: SONY DVD + RW DW-Q58A I clicked on properties and it states the drive is working properly?? Where do I find the {GUID} info to edit a the registry? Am I fubar here???? Pardon my bad language but I am getting really flumoxed here.
Sorry the image(194KB) won't upload it just spins and spins. The line item in the registry reads: (pic of paper with ab in red) (Default) in the name then under type REG_SZ and finally in the data section (value not set)
Sorry I've been gone so long. I had stuff to do yesterday and today so could not get back here until now.

It's okay to get annoyed, I do it all the time. :pullhair:

Copy the following to the clipboard, then open a Command Prompt (Start / Run type cmd and press Enter), right click on the blue header bar and select paste.

reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives" > regout.txt & notepad regout.txt

Copy the response and paste it here please.

When you close notepad, enter del regout.txt
Hmmm, looks like the registry entry for your DVD drive is missing. Try uninstalling it via Device Manager, then reboot and let XP rediscover it and reload the drivers and hopefully update the registry correctly. Once that's done, open My Computer then right click on the DVD drive and select Properties. Is the Recording tab visible now?
Ok did that and there were some changes. I no longer have 2 cd rom drives listed e and f. F is still listed as a cd rom drive only and no recording tab appears in the properties. E is now listed as ? local disk. Reran the regout thing here are the results: ! REG.EXE VERSION 3.0 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives Attached is a screen shot of mycomputer window.
Boot to Safe Mode, what does My Computer show?

I'm off to bed so won't see your response till tomorrow.

If things look more normal then there is something starting at boot time that is causing the problem.

Use msconfig to determine what is causing the problem.

These are good tutorials on using msconfig in XP or Vista:
How to use msconfig in Windows XP
How to use msconfig in Windows Vista

Please boot to Safe Mode.

Click on Start then Run, type msconfig and press Enter.
Click on the Startup tab then the Disable All button.
Do a regular boot, see if it runs normal.
If yes then use msconfig to enable several items at a time till you find the culprit.

If no, boot to Safe Mode again, start msconfig and click on the Services tab.
Check the Hide All Microsoft Services box then click the Disable All button.
Again, do a regular boot, see if it runs normal.
If yes then use msconfig to enable services till you find the culprit.

Once you've found the culprit, uninstall it or find out how to eliminate it from your system.
Simply disabling it in msconfig is a temporary fix at best.
Enable everything else you disabled.

If that doesn't help then it's a device driver so I'll need to go back and look at your StartupList again to see if I can figure out what it is.

Until tomorrow …
