Dear experts,

About a month or so ago, my laptop was infected with some backdoor trojans which were difficult to remove. The advice i received was to reformat it so as to start with a clean slate. I did so. However, now it seems that everytime i type on the keyboard, some keys get eaten_up i.e. the behaviour is never reciprocated to the screen. The keypad on laptop is fairly new and the keys don't stick and aren't damaged. This leads me to believe that there may be a backdoor trojan that is monitoring the keystrokes and buffering / sending it to some website. Please see below an HJT log.

I have made an ERUNT backup as well, and have MBAM, SpyBot S&D, SpywareBlaster, and SpywareGuard.

Welcome back calvin_hobbes,

What happened to your anti-virus? How do you expect to not be back here every month or so without Anti-Virus protection?

You aren't running Anti Virus Software

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network.
Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software (for personal use), from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition
-Anti-virus program for Windows.
-The home edition is freeware for noncommercial user
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
- Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.
- Available for single computer use for home and non commercial use.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Open Notepad: Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad.
Click on Format and ensure that Wordwrap is unchecked. If it isn't, uncheck it.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Hi Tomk, Thanks for picking up this thread. I am running Trend Micro Office Scan 8.0 SP1 (w/ dat files which get updated every day). I will run a Kaspersky log overnight and let you know of the results tomorrow. thanks, calvin
Hi Tom, I will be going on vacation starting today (until mid next week), and my home internet connection was not working yesterday. Can we put this thread on hold until then (and not delete it)? thanks, calvin

calvin_hobbes,

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

calvin_hobbes,

Kaspersky found a Backdoor trojan in an old archived email folder. I'm not seeing anything currently related to it active on your machine, however, it is best to be warned.

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

Is the D:\Personal\Recovered docs from C840\University Account\cse_mails something you still need. If not, I'll give you instructions that will remove the whole University account. For that matter, If you don't need anything there, we can remove the whole Recovered Docs folder.

Please let me know.
Hi Tom, Is there any way we can clean the particular file in question? If not, then you would have to teach me how to remove (reluctantly) the corrupted file, but not the entire folder. comp behaviour seems normal.. no more key press lags.. thanks, calvin
calvin_hobbes,

I cannot tell which file is infected. All you can do is go through the email there and delete anything you don't need/want/recognize. The infected email will have an attachment. Don't open any attachments.

This will take care of the other contaminated file.

Please download the OTM by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTM.exe to run it.
(Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines inside the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Files
    D:\Personal\PKI Keys\PKI2\ST0000083.zip

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
  • Return to OTM, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Then let me have one last HijackThis log.
