Hello blindlemon,

I did stop the scan when it started looking into my extra drives. Only music and pics there.

Not that I want to scare you but a high proportion of infections come from music and other downloads. You may wish to reconsider that decision.

The Kaspersky did find two "backdoor" items as you see.

Apart from the one in your e-mail achive those ones found by Kaspersky are already in quarantine, caught by the tools we have been using. They cannot harm your machine where they are and will be removed when we clean up at the end.

Now

I am always a little uncomfortable attacking anything in e-mail in case we end up removing something you wish to keep. I think we will be okay with this though as it is achived. However if you have archived e-mail you wish to keep come back to me and we will look at alternatives. In the meantime here is a script to remove that baddie.

Please run OTL.exe
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Files
    C:\Temp\dougstuff\archive backup.pst

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done
  • It will produce a log for you on reboot, please post that log in your next reply.
Hi Emeraldnzl Good point on the music but the extra drive that holds my music is only stuff I've ripped or bought legit. But very good point. I'll run a scan on them as well. The email archive file I'm not worried about. I now archive from my laptop and send the archive to my backup drive. That file is an old one. However , looks like OTL had some trouble with that file. Here's the log file All processes killed Error: Unable to interpret in the current context! Let's just make sure:

After Outlook archives items for the first time, you can access items in the file directly from Archive Folders in your Outlook Folder List (Folder List: Displays the folders available in your mailbox. To view subfolders, click the plus sign (+) next to the folder. If the Folder List is not visible, on the Go menu, click Folder List.).

If you are unsure about the Navigation Pane and Go menu in Outlook this link may be helpful:

http://helpdesk.ua.edu/training/outlook/navigation.html

Delete the archived files.

Tell me how you get on. :)
There is no archive folder in Outlook on my desktop, only on my laptop. I don't use outlook on my desktop other than to send a few links. I think where that file (archive.backup.pst) came from was quite a long time ago I might have copied the file from my laptop to that location for some reason. What is interesting is the date on the archive.backup.pst file is from yesterday. Must have changed the date when I did the scan? It's no problem for me to delete that file manually. All my archives are archived to my laptop daily and from there I copy to a backup drive in case I ever need it.
Hello blindlemon,

It's no problem for me to delete that file manually.

Please do so, Kaspersky says it is infected and I think it is correct.

After that I think your machine will be clean.

Unless you have any other issues we will go to cleaning away the tools we have been using.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.[image unavailable: Posted Image]

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware. This will also clean out and reset your Restore Points.
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Step 2
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTL.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTL.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTL to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove but it may be a useful tool to keep.

——————————————————————————————————————-

A reminder now: Remember to turn back on any anti-malware programs you may have turned off during the cleaning process.

——————————————————————————————————————-

Now that you are clean here are some things I think are worth having a look at:

———————————————————————————————————————

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then. This helps with security and your computer will run more efficiently. I clean mine once a week. For ease of use, you might consider the following free program: ——————————————————————————————————————–

A great way to check that your Microsoft and Java have the latest updates is to go to Software Inspector at Secunia.

I do this weekly. Not only do they tell you which programs need updating but they give you the link to follow.

To bolster your security go to Secunia.com to ensure essential programs are up to date.

———————————————————————————————————————

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is excellant; it is more secure than Internet Explorer. Firefox is my default browser but I retain Internet Explorer as well so that I can access the very few sites that require it.

Firefox may be downloaded from Here

———————————————————————————————————————–

Startuplite is a tool to help you stop some programs not needed when you start your computer from loading. They will begin automatically only when needed.

———————————————————————————————————————–

To help protect your computer in the future here are some free programs you can look at:

  • If your Microsoft Update is not working automatically. Keep your operating system up to date by visiting
  • Microsoft Windows Update

monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
  • AdAware SE Personal
  • Spybot Search & Destroy

weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
Assuming we have solved your desktop's problems let's now have a look at your laptop. :)

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
Post the reports back here.
Hi Emeraldnzl I was out of town for a while and just got back. I did the clean up on my desktop as you requested and things seem to be running well. No weird things happening. And thanks so much for the advice, I'll get on that. BTW, I only use firefox if necessary, I'm starting my laptop now and I did download the dds.scr and everytime I double click on it, it opens notepad and I see the scripting for the program. How do I get a .scr file to run. thanks much Blind Lemon
Hi Emeraldnzl
I just can't get that script to run so I took the liberty to post a hjt log file. Will that help us get started?

Okay, I just renamed the extension to .pif and it did run, so now we have the dds and hjt to work with. Here's the dds logs. I've uploaded the attach.txt as a zip file per their instructions. Hello blindlemon,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Have been travelling, returning home from a visit to my daughter & son in law's in Australia.

Turning to these logs. Nothing leaping out at me there.

Are there any particular issues with this computer or is it a general check?

Moving one in the meantime:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Now

You have used Malwarebytes before. If you still have it on your machine please update and run. Post the scan report back here.

If you no-longer have Malwarebytes please download from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Next

Kaspersky on line scanner is very thorough. It can take a long time and for periods may seem not to be working. Just be patient and let it do its job.

Kaspersky works with Internet Explorer and Firefox 3.

Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: you will need to turn off your security programs to allow Kaspersky to do its job.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start dowanloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives

Hi Emeraldnzl Welcome back. Hope your trip was fun and you got to charge the mental batteries! I'm actually heading out to Mexico on friday so I'll be gone for a week but will knock out a few of the request you made before I go and then hook back up in a week. No, nothing really as far as problems, my concern is that my laptop is networked to my desktop and was a bit worried that the hacker that was able to get my ftp passwords and mess my sites up may have put something on the laptop as well. So having you check the laptop is more of a precautionary thing. Again, thanks so much Blind Lemon

Hi blindlemon,

Kaspersky has found infections in your Outlook archives.

You should delete these.

Otherwise it looks clean.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.[image unavailable: Posted Image]

Please go here to download OTC.

Run this program to remove the tools we have been using.

You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process choose Yes.

MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove but it may be a useful tool to keep. Erunt can also be uninstalled via the add/remove programs utility, for some though, it may be a useful backup program to hold on to. If OTC hasn't removed it the AFT folder can be deleted but you might like to keep it too. I run it once a week to remove temporary bits and pieces that are not required and can be a security risk.

Next, we need to clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.
