My desktop computer has no internet connection because??? So I am trying to fix the problem. I ran RSIT and an old version of Hijackthis and tried to post it here, but this forum would not accept my log from an old version of Hijackthis. Then I went to down load a more recent version. In order to get it to the desktop I have to down load it to a thumb drive on my laptop and transfer it to the desktop via sneaker net. When I tried to open the file the computer did not recognize the file as an executable file and ask what I want to open it with. I went back to this sites page to down load Hijackthis and tried putting it on my laptop. Same thing, it does not recognize the file as an executable file. There are other links on that page but they try to down load Noadware instead. What am I missing? Thanks
Hi,

remove the header from the HJT log in order to post the old log… I suspect what the issue may be, so even an old log would be helpful to me at this point to try and restore your internet connection:

Mean time

Please reset IE

  • Go to Start > Control Panel, and choose Network Connections.
  • Right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection for cable and DSL or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and choose Properties.
  • Click the Networking tab
  • Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item.
  • Write down the settings in case you should need to change them back.
  • Select the radio button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically".
  • Click OK twice to get out of the properties screen and restart your computer.
  • If not prompted to reboot go ahead and reboot manually.

In I.E.

  • Check internet options settings.
  • Tools > Internet Options > Connections
  • LAN settings
  • Choose "automatically detect settings"
  • uncheck both proxy settings boxes

In FireFox

Click on Advanced -> Network -> Setttings…
the No Proxy option should be selected

If that gets you back connected - please do the following:

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.pif to run the tool.
  • When done, two DDS.txt's will open.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt
Attach.txt.

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.
Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.
**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any
"<— ROOKIT" entries unless advised!
If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click NO
  • In the right panel, you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked … leave everything checked and ensure the Show all box is un-checked.
  • Now click the Scan button.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

Post the contents of GMER.txt in your next reply.

Please describe how your computer is behaving at the moment, listing any symptoms and problems that you are experiencing
Thanks for the response. Now I’m having problems with the laptop. I think this is a wireless network problem on the laptop. It happened last year and then it went away. If you don’t hear from me in the next couple of days send help. I did get the Hijackthis programe to download. The button in the middle of the web page did not work. I downloaded it from the link at the bottom of the page. I'll follow the instructions above and get back to you if the laptop allows.
CatByte,

I followed the instructions to reset IE and there is no change. I installed DDS and GMER via sneaker net and ran them. DDS worked OK but GMER ran for over 8 hours before I decided it was just scanning the C drive over and over and stopped it.

My problem started a couple of weeks ago. My desktop computer lost connection with the internet. I can connect to the Linksys router and its configuration page, so it looks to me like the hardware and connections are OK. The desktop is connected with a cat 5 cable to the router. I can connect to the internet with my laptop and wireless connection through the same Linksys router. So I think the router is OK. I have rebooted the computer and the router.

When I open IE6 the browser tries to go to the webpage http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/fix_homepage/

But it ends up with a “The page cannot be displayed” message with no error number like 404. After carefully checking the spelling of the URL I went to the web page with the laptop and found that web page is used when Symantec detects an attempt to change the browser’s home page.

I can not change it back to Yahoo as the wife likes. Maybe because the malware is still trying to change it? Anyway I still can not connect to the internet.

I down loaded Malware Removal Bot to a thumb drive and tried to install it in the desktop. A warning from Symantac popped up and the EXE file on the thumb drive was deleted as a malware scanner. I was able stop Symantec from deleting the file and I loaded it into the desktop and ran it. It came up with 400+ items but no high threats. I did have it fix all the problems. I also ran CCleaner and it found a couple of things that were also fixed.

I noticed the Symantec log shows an automatic update on 6/1. Just about the time the problem started. Coincidence?

I unplugged the cat 5 cable from the router. Just because IE cant access the internet does not mean malware does not have access.

Here are the logs:

I need to get a zip program for the Attach.txt file. I'll attach it to the next reply.

Thanks for your help
Glen
Hi,

Malware Removal Bot is a Rogue Security Program. I suggest you uninstall it via Add/Remove programs.

http://www.2-viruses.com/remove-malware-removal-bot (this link is for information purposes only - don't download or purchase any other programs)

It concerns me that GMER wouldn't run, there's no obvious sign of malware in the logs other than Malware Removal Bot, so there could be a hidden rootkit.

Have you tried resetting your Zone Alarm..sometimes there are issues with it…where it 'forgets' what's allowed to connect.

Try and run GMER in safe mode.

If you still cannot get it to run then, download the following program and transfer it over to run it:

Download RootRepeal.zip and unzip it to your Desktop.
  • Double click RootRepeal.exe to start the program
  • Click on the Report tab at the bottom of the program window
  • Click the Scan button
  • In the Select Scan dialog, check:
    • Drivers
    • Files
    • Processes
    • SSDT
    • Stealth Objects
    • Hidden Services
  • Click the OK button
  • In the next dialog, select all drives showing
  • Click OK to start the scan

Note: The scan can take some time. DO NOT run any other programs while the scan is running

  • When the scan is complete, the Save Report button will become available
  • Click this and save the report to your Desktop as RootRepeal.txt
If the report is not too long, post the contents of RootRepeal.txt in your next reply. If the report is very long, it will not be complete if you post it, so please attach it to your reply instead.

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to insert the attachment into your post
I’m surprised Malware Removal Bot is a rogue. It came recommended by an IT type. I removed it and tried to get to Zone Alarm. I got an error message that said “Windows can not access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item”. The user account I was using is an administrator account. So you may be getting to the heart of this. I tried to right click on Zone Alarm in Windows explorer and click on properties in the hopes I could find something there. No luck. Just to be sure you understand, GMER did run but it just did not stop. After 8 hours I figured it was not working right and stopped it. I put the computer into safe mode and it now is running GMER. It does not look to be running the same as when it first started. It looks like it is just starting from where it left off. I’ll let you know the results.
GMER has been running for over an hour in safe mode now and it has added only one line to the text box. How long should this normally run? Should I stop it and run RootRepeal now? Thanks
RootRepeal was another bust. It ran for a half hour and only the “initializing please wait…” message was seen. I just brought up Task Manager in processes and it showed RootRepeal using 50 to 52 percent of CPU.

Do I need to delete those two programs and reload them?
OK, so now the computer is in normal mode and I can access Zone Alarm. I checked the setting for IE and is has full access to trusted and internet.

I was also able to get internet access. I can go to several web pages. The strange thing is that when clicking on Yahoo it goes to http://m.www.yahoo.com. It looks a little strange. The styles are not normal for Yahoo. I can not change the home page on IE, it always reverts to the Symantac page as described above.

I started Root Repeal and when I left the computer it still had the “initializing please wait…” message on the screen. I’ll wait a while and see what it does.
There is a setting in Norton AV for that.

Depending on what version of Norton you have - open your Norton Protection Center and look for
> Web Browsing > Auto Protect > Configure Auto Protect > Home Page Protection, there is probably a check box for "Block all attempts to change my homepage."

At the top of the page, click Options: Norton Anti Virus

On the left, click Home Page Protection

There you can turn it off and on.

Turn it off > change your home page and then turn it back on again.

see if you can locate that and change your home page
you may want to consider uninstalling zone alarm for a short time - see if that changes your situation. (just be careful if you connect to the internet while it is uninstalled) You may be having some software conflicts, I have heard of zone alarm causing issues before, that appears to be the reason GMER and root repeal are having difficulty running, try disabling the AV while running the program as well (stay off the internet for that) see what happens
It’s definitely Zone Alarm. I shut down both Zone Alarm and Norton after pulling the cat 5 cable off the router.

GMER ran for over an hour before I stopped it and saved the log. I’ll post it below:

I turned Zone Alarm and Norton back on and plugged in the cat 5 cable. I could not access the internet. I turned off Norton and I still could not access the internet.

I turned on Norton and turned off Zone Alarm I could get on the internet.

So I turned on Windows Firewall and I can still get on the internet.

I updated the Norton virus files which required rebooting which is what the computer is doing now.

When that is done I’ll work on the IE home page issue using the advice you posted above.
