Hello kitrak,

Welcome to WTT.

You may have used Malwarebytes before. If you have, and still have it on your machine, please update and run. Post the scan report back here.

If you do not have Malwarebytes please download from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Next
  • Please download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here.
  • It is important that is saved to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<info.txt (<
So when you return please post
  • MBAM log
  • the two RSIT logs - log.txt and info.txt

Note: Unless otherwise instructed always post the logs in the forum. It is likely these reports will not fit on one post. It might be necessary to break the logs up to get them on the forum. Just use as many posts as you need, that's fine. :)
i actually installed fedora 9 on my system hoping that installing a new OS will remove any virus and trojans present. my question is did that actually helped??
Hello kitrak,

Couple of things:

i actually installed fedora 9 on my system hoping that installing a new OS will remove any virus and trojans present.
my question is did that actually helped??

Well I am not a tech person so these are just my thoughts. In itself it I don't think it would remove viruses in your Windows OS. However if you re-formatted your whole hard drive and reinstalled Windows when you installed the Linux based system it would.

Now

Turning to your Windows OS. If you are now happy and don't wish to continue with help, tell me. :)

If however, you do want to continue, we need to cover some more ground…so:

dont have access to log file, but it showed no infection no virus nothing.

The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Secondly: Did you carry out the RSIT instructions? If so please post the logs it produced.

Well I am not a tech person so these are just my thoughts. In itself it I don't think it would remove viruses in your Windows OS. However if you re-formatted your whole hard drive and reinstalled Windows when you installed the Linux based system it would.

i selected "remove all partitions on selected drives and create a default layout"
while installing fedora.
is that mean the same as you said? will that do the same as you are talking about?
i still have fedora i did`nt installed windows.

thanks.
If I were in your shoes I would want to check that my Windows wasn't infected.

If you don't wish to supply the logs outlined above why don't you just run an on line scan with something like Kaspersky. Before you do though you will have to update your Java. Here are the necessary instructions if you want to take that route:

Your Java is out of date, older versions are vunerable to attack.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
Next

Kaspersky on line scanner is very thorough. It can take a long time and for periods may seem not to be working. Just be patient and let it do its job.

Kaspersky works with Internet Explorer and Firefox 3.

Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: you will need to turn off your security programs to allow Kaspersky to do its job.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start dowanloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Okay so things have changed since that HijackThis log at your first post. It all looks squeeky clean to me. Do you want to run the Kaspersky scan to confirm for certain? If not we can clear away the tools we have been using at next post.
sorry to ask but by "sqeeky clean" you mean there are issues with the notebook?? and sorry again i didnt understand the last sentence could you explain that thanks.

sorry to ask but by "sqeeky clean" you mean there are issues with the notebook??

No nothing like that…just one of my sayings.

I am almost certain that your machine is clean but if you wanted to make absolutely sure we could run an on line scan with Kaspersky. We would need to download Java though and It would take some time for Kaspersky to run though it's checks. Really, unless you have any issues, I don't think it is necessary in this situation.

i didnt understand the last sentence could you explain that

Just to remove RSIT and any other diagnostic tools from your machine. There are some instructions to cover that. I will tell you in the next post once you have told me whether you want to run an on line scan with Kaspersky.

edited to add explanation for removal of tools
i think i will run an online scan with kaspersky just to make sure everything is working fine. i will post the result of the logs. thanks.
Hello kitrak,

As you probably know the Kaspersky scan is clear.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.[image unavailable: Posted Image]

Please go here to download OTC.

Run this program to remove the tools we have been using.

You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process choose Yes.

MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove but it may be a useful tool to keep.

Next, we need to clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore in Vista to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore.Click on the Start button to open your Start Menu.
Click on the Control Panel menu option.
Click on the System and Maintenance menu option.
Click on the System menu option.
Click on System Protection in the left-hand task list.
Click on the System Protection tab.
Uncheck the checkboxes next to each hard drive listed under the Create restore points automatically on the selected disks: section.

When you uncheck a disk you will be presented with this screen [external image: Posted Image]
Click on the Turn System Protection Off button.

Press the Apply button and then the OK button.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.Click on the Start button to open your Start Menu.
Click on the Control Panel menu option.
Click on the System and Maintenance menu option.
Click on the System menu option.
Click on System Protection in the left-hand task list.
Put a checkmark in the checkboxes next to each hard drive listed under the Create restore points automatically on the selected disks: section.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.

——————————————————————————————————————-

A reminder now: Remember to turn back on any anti-malware programs you may have turned off during the cleaning process.

——————————————————————————————————————-

Now that you are clean here are some things I think are worth having a look at:

———————————————————————————————————————

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then. This helps with security and your computer will run more efficiently. I clean mine once a week. For ease of use, you might consider the following free program: ——————————————————————————————————————–

A great way to check that your Microsoft and Java have the latest updates is to go to Software Inspector at Secunia.

I do this weekly. Not only do they tell you which programs need updating but they give you the link to follow.

To bolster your security go to Secunia.com to ensure essential programs are up to date.

———————————————————————————————————————

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is excellant; it is more secure than Internet Explorer. Firefox is my default browser but I retain Internet Explorer as well so that I can access the very few sites that require it.

Firefox may be downloaded from Here

———————————————————————————————————————–

Startuplite is a tool to help you stop some programs not needed when you start your computer from loading. They will begin automatically only when needed.

———————————————————————————————————————–

To help protect your computer in the future here are some free programs you can look at if you do not already have them:

  • If your Microsoft Update is not working automatically. Keep your operating system up to date by visiting
  • Microsoft Windows Update

monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
  • AdAware SE Personal
  • Spybot Search & Destroy

weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
thanks so much for the help!!
regarding the restore points, as this is the fresh installation of vista do you think i can skip this step because after my notebook was infected i did a clean installation of vista.

Now that you are clean here are some things I think are worth having a look at:

i will sure folllow these steps

thanks and cheers!!
